Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Walter Rohl commented in a test I read that people tend to drive too hard through slower tighter bends, and too slowly through fast open bends, losing speed in both situations.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Morning All, Just getting general thoughts, would you buy a facelift C2 with no PSM? Did a search and found some points within other threads but no general consensus... Thanks

POST 2Original post

personally no...I like the piece of mind that sorts stuff out for me when I get it a little wrong

POST 3Original post

Most of the time it'll be fine. C2s have lots of grip and traction, and as long as you drive it sensibly... However, my BMW 3 with DSC certainly saved me from a trip into a sliproad barrier when I hit a diesel spill.

POST 4Original post

Only time it has ever kicked in for me was pulling away from the toll booths on the Severn Bridge (too fast, too furious). Dont worry about it on trackdays as you should definitely turn it off when tracking. I would buy a C2 without PSM, but am very glad I have it - I see it as a little monster that sits there doing nothing until you need it and then it subtley helps you to avoid crashing/spinning. (Maybe thats what the two rear 'seats' are for, as a human cant sit with such an upright back)

POST 5Original post

5th gear did a really good demonstration of the 996 with and without PSM. The fastest Tiff could drive it in a circle without PSM was about 40, without he could get to 50mph (IIRC). They were saying it was essential, but yes, to track it and get best performance you switch it off (a'la Stig). I wouldn't buy a 996 without PSM and is one of the essentials I would suggest.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My pre-facelift C4 has PSM and I've been on a skid pan with it on an off and know just how good it is. However, I'm looking around and seeing alot of C2s that were supplied without and just wondering why. Is it purely cost or is this something people wanted. Why didn't Porsche fit as standard if it's that needed?, like in the C4...

POST 7Original post

Personally one of the things I like about my Targa is it has no PSM. Ensures I always respect the car for what it is. I really do not enjoy driving cars where the electronics is in control. OK, yes sometimes it makes things interesting but that is why i drive Porsches.

POST 8Original post

What's cool about PSM is that you can turn it off, and it will turn itself back on to help out if it considers you are in grave danger of crashing (e.g. panic braking after an unprovoked slide) Walter Rohl commented in a test I read that people tend to drive too hard through slower tighter bends, and too slowly through fast open bends, losing speed in both situations. He says therefore that in most cases, a driver can go round a circuit faster with PSM on.

POST 9Original post

Dervish, I prefer the idea of no driving aids - its a sports car.. that means RWD and no PSM  In all seriousness it wouldn't bother me either way Simon

POST 10Original post

I had an early Audi TT without ESP and loved it exactly as it was: On the ragged edge of instability, but that appealed to me as an ex-amateur rally driver! My all-time favourite rally car is a Lancia Stratos and they don't come much more scary than that! I only had the ESP fitted so that I could resell it... And that's really the issue here... C2 without PSM is fine as long as you treat it with respect (I managed to survive my first quarter of a million miles of spirited driving and youthful extravagance without even ABS  ) But be aware that there are a lot of people that won't go near it when you want to move it on... so it needs to be CHEAP! PSM was only standard on C4s with 996 for many years. Logic suggests this should have been the other way around, but actually there are very very few drivers that can catch a C4 that lets go... However, the limit in a C2 is a little bit slower and massively more progressive - back end breaks away and as long as you don't stomp on the brakes, chances are you will survive and may even be lucky (or quick enough) to stay out of the scenery  Once the limit is reached in a C4 - there is nothing left (except a quick prayer perhaps!) so PSM is necessary to stop the unwary from reaching that limit...

POST 11Original post

I bought a C2 without PSM and it did not phase me at all - coming from a TVR where there are no driver aids, the concept of airbags etc was fairly novel foi a weekend car! So far, I have found the C2 to be very progressive and gives you ample warning if you are playing a bit too hard.
