Suggestion

Personally would not consider the higher running/maintenance costs as a deal breaker for the TT, I do not think from reading a previous break down it was a break the bank difference anyway over the C4S.

If you can justify the extra 10k I'd get a Turbo, but the C4S is still a great (and fast) car......in the end how often will you be using the car to its full potential?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All and a belated Happy New Year. I'm hoping you experts can help!! I've just sold my Lotus to upgrade to a 996. I am in two minds as to whether to go for the 4s or the Turbo. I'm aware that a turbo will be more pricey but assuming that's not an issue, is it worth spending £3-£4,0000 more on the turbo? - Is the Turbo performance that much more impressive? - Am I opening up myself to a whole world of pain in selection, maintenence and potential problems with the Turbo compared to the 4s? - What should I be looking for in the Turbo for potential pitfalls? - Is the Turbo 4WD also and is it twin Turbo? - Any other main differences between the 4s and the Turbo? Excuse my ignorance with all the ?'s but the Porsche brand is completely new to me. I'd really appreciate all your comments, suggestions and points of view. Cheers, Omar

POST 2Original post

Welcome to the forum, 12 months ago I would have said 4s for best value for money and overall desireability but with current turbo values, they are a hell of a lot of car for the money. So I think the turbo is worth the little extra if it's the car you want. Some 4s and Turbo owners along shortly......

POST 3Original post

- Is the Turbo performance that much more impressive? Not driven a 4S, but been a passenger and my perception is that yes, the turbo is noticeably quicker - Am I opening up myself to a whole world of pain in selection, maintenence and potential problems with the Turbo compared to the 4s? Get one with a warranty! - What should I be looking for in the Turbo for potential pitfalls? No warranty  - Is the Turbo 4WD also and is it twin Turbo? Yes, 4wd, twin turbo - Any other main differences between the 4s and the Turbo? Turbo has various cosmetic differences, spoiler, air scoops on the arches etc. Also a lot of kit comes as standard on the Turbo.

POST 4Original post

Hi Omar, welocme, both great cars, i agree with jamie, love my C4S but if buying now, i'd get a tt have a read of this thread http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=17016&highlight=turbo good luck in your search

POST 5Original post

sorry to be unhelpfull  but do you need the rear seats? If not GT3 all the way

POST 6Original post

I see Haran's pointed you toward the thread that addresses exactly your query. I have a C4S which I use daily for work and for fun. Its been fabulous, and I haven't once wanted more power, and I love the noise. I think you've got to drive both and make up your own mind, but that's part of the fun of getting a new car... 8)

POST 7Original post

The Turbo is awesome in every aspect, absolutely no doubt. However I'd personally go C4S. More than enough power for daily use, sounds better (esp. with PSE), looks better (rear reflector, no fixed spoiler or rear ducts), cheaper to run in all aspects. A great all rounder IMHO.

POST 8Original post

4s or Turbo? I pondered over exactly the same issue until I bough a C4S in October. If you want a Turbo its going to be a lot more expensive if you it the same year manufacture as the C4S, but if you want an older pre facelift one you can get it for a similar price. I went out in a friends 996 Turbo S recently and the increase in power was unbelievable. If you can justify the extra 10k I'd get a Turbo, but the C4S is still a great (and fast) car......in the end how often will you be using the car to its full potential?

POST 9Original post

Hi I have recently bought a C4S to replace my (fun) S1 Exige plus (commuting) Jaguar X-Type and it is great in that all rounder role. Bryn

POST 10Original post

Hi, Have to comment  Jamie has a point in the present market, seen some really nice spec 996 TT's which are amazing value for money. Personally would not consider the higher running/maintenance costs as a deal breaker for the TT, I do not think from reading a previous break down it was a break the bank difference anyway over the C4S. However the decision is down to your wants/needs. For use on the road which is quick and reasonably easy to lose your licence and the best looking 996 it is, in my opinion the C4S. For faster acceleration road use and much quicker way of losing your licence and the second best looking 996 then the turbo  For track use as the main use then really has to be a GT3. Overall enjoy the search and don't rush in it is a buyers market. Regards Alan.

POST 11Original post

There is so much talk about which is better C4S Turbo or GT3. Without a doubt the most focused "drivers" car is the GT3. If it is a fun car and you don't need back seats this has to be the one to go for. If you want a daily driver then it has to come down to the C4S or the Turbo. Some love the clean lines of the C4S others prefer the scoops and inlets of the turbo. Both are incredible machines. The Turbo is considerably faster than a standard C2 or C4 not just on paper but on the road.My only gripe with the turbo is the lack of exhaust note. A n/a 911 with a PSE sounds wonderful, a turbo always seems to be in stealth mode. The 4wd 911's do loose out to the 2wd ones in terms of involvement. They are so good at what they do you have to drive like a lunatic to get them to the limit. My first 911 was a 996 Targa - Loved the feel of that car Then I got the Turbo - Amazing car with outrageous performance Next will be a 997 GT3 - In white 8) Whatever you go for do the sensible thing and get it checked. Then enjoy

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is all great stuff, thanks guys. Keep it coming. Interesting about the C4s sounding better than the TT, I assumed that would be the case but sounds like the TT is much more and feels much more powerful. Seems like i'm looking at around £40k for a 2001 TT. Does that sound about right? Whats the best kind of waranty to get with these, or should the come with one? I assume a HPI check is a given, unless there is a particular one to do for Porsche's?? Was thinking of going for the Black but not too many around, also love the kind of twin joined oval exhaust (if that makes sense) is that a sports exhaust? Omar

POST 13Original post

Black's about the second most popular colour after silver. The exhaust tips are just a £250-300 option, nothing fancy.

POST 14Original post

Normally aspirated cars sound better than Turbo cars simply down to the turbocharger physically dampening the sound. Various exhausts will help with compensating for this and I think Tubi are a good option on the TT. The PSE option from Porsche for the NA C4S sounds sublime

POST 15Original post

Damian, were the figure of 8 tips standard on PSE cars to outwardly differentiate them, or simply an option for anyone liking the look?
