Long time lurker here, this will be my first post. I finally bought a very tidy atlas grey 987 a couple of weeks ago. The car has the Sound Package Plus (SPP) option and I decided to replace the stock head unit with something more usable, mostly for
Apple Carplay
. So today I replaced the
CDR24
with a
Sony XAV-AX5550D
. I used a
harness and fascia
kit from InCarTec between the stock harness and the harness that came with the new head unit. I left the orange fibre optic cable unplugged.
The system works, with the exception of the larger speakers in the doors, which seem to produce only very low volume, so the sound is lacking bass (they were certainly louder with the CDR24 installed). I've played around with the sound settings on the new head unit without luck. I understand these are powered by the prone to fail ASK amp in the front trunk, but I don't think my amp is faulty. My harness from InCarTec is supposed to have an amp turn on wire that should give normal speaker level audio signal to the ASK amp. I am not very experienced with this sort of thing, so any advice on how I might fix this would be appreciated !
I went to check again last night to see if I could get any wiser as to what’s wrong. It seems there is actually no sound at all coming from the larger speakers in both doors. I initially thought they produced some very low sound, but I now think I just got confused by the vibrations coming from the mid-range speaker just above it. The center dash speaker is also seemingly silent post head unit replacement.
As far as I can tell this would mean either that the amp is fried or that the wiring that should turn on the ASK amp is not connected properly. In the stock harness, this should be the thin red/black wire, which, from what I gather should be connected to the blue/white striped wire (Remote out) on the harness that came with my head unit. I will pop out the head unit tonight and check the connections and update this thread.
So I checked all connections. They all seem to be correct. The InCarTec harness splits the Remote out from the HU into two blue wires, one connects to the amp turn on wire in the stock harness (black/red), the other connects to a white wire for the amplified antenna (white). Then I opened the fuse box to see if the fuse for the ASK amp had blown (row D, pos. 10), and voilà - it was missing. I put in a new 25A fuse, turned ignition on and immediately heard loud sporadic 'thumps' of bass. Previous owner must have pulled out the fuse at some point. This is where the ASK amp fuse was supposed to be:
All fuse locations are documented
here
for anyone interested.
I've decided to send it to bergvillfx.com for repair.
Yeah, sounds like someone didn't know what they were doing, and just slapped stuff together to get it workable. It will just take continued troubleshooting to figure out... or, having someone else do it for you.
