Replacing standard battery with Lithium-Ion Battery

I'm always interested in reducing the weight of my 2008 BS without sacrificing usability and Lithium -Ion batteries can save 30 - 40 pounds. I saw a PCA Tech Tactics presentation on these batteries and although they are expensive, they are easy direct replacements. Does anyone have experience with this mod and if so do you think it's worth the cost?

Unless your Lithium -Ion battery is specifically designed to deal with AGM battery voltages you need to get your car coded. I have experience with the RS-30, which I had to repair after the car’s voltages fried it. I think doing Lithium is a good idea and I will try again as soon as my PIWIS cables arrive.

Yep, Lithium (LiOn) batteries need a specific charging rate that's different than standard wet cells or AGM batteries require, and especially if you're planning to run with a LiFePo-4 ( Lithium -ferrous/iron phosphate) battery .

I have put Antigravity batteries in my 458, Macan , Alfa 4c, Skidoo snowmobile and Honda Talon with no issues. In the Macan , 4C and 458, no coding was performed. Works great, less weight and handles parasitic drain.

The charge controller is built into the battery . We've been using Antigravity batteries for years without any problems.

I mean, if it makes you happy go for it, but no...you're not going to notice 30 pounds if this is a street car. Personally I went the opposite direction and mounted the biggest AGM battery I could fit (I think an H8) to get the longest life and to not have to worry about the car sitting for extended periods. That choice has served me well during the pandemic, I must say.

The best way to reduce the weight of a sports car is usually to put the fork down, I know it's true with this old guy!

I installed an AntiGravity H6 battery in my '14 CS and never looked back. Works wonderful from day 1.

If you live in very cold or very hot climate, Lithium batteries can fail you. I have SUV experience with these batteries. I went to Lithium and switched back to a Gel battery bank.

Have the AntiGravity battery in my Carrera T and did get it coded. Issue was that (as it was explained to me) in cold weather the charging system boosts the charging voltage which is above what the LiPO4 likes(was getting an "Overvoltage" CEL). Planning to put one in my newly acquired '11 Boxster Spyder and will be discussing need for coding with dealer service manager. Mass is the enemy!

Works great in my snowmobile, -30 temps occasionally overnight. Maybe the brand of battery ? I use Antigravity.

Thank you for the helpful information. I heard a representative from Antigravity on a PCA Tech Tactics Live episode and it sounded like Antigravity batteries were a direct replacement for the OEM battery . My memory is that the battery control board would manage voltage and charge rate.

I get that, but anytime I replace a component I try to replace it with something as good or better. Of course cost is always a consideration. I have found that for me weight is the biggest enemy of fun in a sports car so I endeavor to find cost effective weight reduction without compromising the comfort of the car. Lithium batteries are expensive, but the cost of acquisition seems to be somewhat offset by the no-cost installation.

These are two of my favorite cars to drive and they both weigh in the 1,300 - 1,500 pound range. I know that the Boxster will never be that light, but lighter is definitely better in my book.
