Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had a sweet handling BMW 330Ci until the day I changed the rear tyres only (still same brand as the front).
Leading evidence: 'Replace rear tyres only (still same brand as the front)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace fronts' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Are there major negatives to running with Rear Michelin / Front Continentals for a month or so before replacing the fronts?

Most of all however, it will change the handling balance on the limit - especially in the wet if the two treads have very different water clearance properties.

Suggestion
I believe its fine to change rears now and then fronts at a later date.

Suggestion
Different levels of grip can confuse the PSM (if you have it) and ultimately could damage the centre coupling (but probably only with frequent track use).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi
I'm looking for some advice please - I recently bought a C4S which is sporting Continentals all round.
I'd like to get some Michelin Pilot Sports on there. Currently my rears have much less thread on them than the fronts...
My questions:
On the C4S, can I change the rears first and the fronts later, or should I do all 4 together?
Are there major negatives to running with Rear Michelin / Front Continentals for a month or so before replacing the fronts?
Many thanks for any assistance on this.
Kind regards,
B.
Hi C4SLife - this topic has been covered a number of times I believe. Just go onto the Search section, choose the 996 Forum and type in Tyres or somesuch and that should result in quite a number of threads available. Read through each to see which answers your question the best!
Of the top of my head, 4 wheel drivers seem to stick to the same type of brand all round more so than the RWDers. I believe its fine to change rears now and then fronts at a later date.

Posted elsewhere as mentioned, but not recommended to run different tread front and rear on any car, but especially not 4WD. Different levels of grip can confuse the PSM (if you have it) and ultimately could damage the centre coupling (but probably only with frequent track use).
Most of all however, it will change the handling balance on the limit - especially in the wet if the two treads have very different water clearance properties.
Is it worth risking any of the above to save £150 (the wear left on your fronts) on a car famous for its handling and grip?
Personally, I'd change all of them.
I had a sweet handling BMW 330Ci until the day I changed the rear tyres only (still same brand as the front). After that, it was transformed into the most evil, slidy car I've driven- I even got left behind by a Renault Espace down a twisty road.
Given that the tread depth was different before i.e. rear less than front, I can't see why rears having more tread than front would make such a difference, but take it from me it did.
For exactly the same reason as you would buy one brand of tyre over another: They all have different handling and grip characteristics...
So, if you have tyres with different handling characteristics on front and rear axles (or even worse, different levels of grip), imagine the result
Apart from the effect on the way the car behaves (which could be bad enough in itself) electronic systems all assume that the limits of grip will be roughly the same on each corner, so big differences could easily confuse them. Tyre tread depth actually makes very little difference, except in standing water (or anything that completely fills the tread on the more worn tyres but not on the others).
Hope that all makes sense?
Don't mix tyre types. Most tyre fitters won't do it for you either. The first thing they ask when you ring up with a pair to be fitted - whats on the other axle?
