I just 'pulled' the silver piece on the gear leaver out, saw problem on (rather flimsy) linkage had come dissengaged and I 're-connected' 'relaigned' the push trod/wire and replaced the silver cover.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • 911uk: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just putting the car in the garage and moved the selector into neutral before selecting reverse and the release button on top of the lever just went slack. Pushed the car back by hand, but of course now cannot remove the key because the car knows "park" hasn't been selected! Any ideas please?

POST 2Original post

Hi, I've been having a look around for you but unfortunately cannot find anything that will help. Hopefully someone will come up with some suggestions soon.

POST 3Original post

Well I don`t know, but if you say the button has gone slack, however it is attached must have come loose. There must be a connecting rod or cable to release the lever to move between gears. Cant you take off the surround and see if you can see anything ??

POST 4Original post

I had same on my old 996 and also on a different instance couldn't depress silver button on top of gear lever. I just 'pulled' the silver piece on the gear leaver out, saw problem on (rather flimsy) linkage had come dissengaged and I 're-connected' 'relaigned' the push trod/wire and replaced the silver cover. Think it part of the 996 being bilt a ittle less solid. I also had the 'cruise' switch just fall apart again a rather flimsy click back together.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The man from Porsche Assistance couldn't fix it either. The car is now on a low loader to OPC Reading. Enterprise have just delivered me a nice new BMW to use until it is fixed. Glad I have taken out the Porsche Warranty. Thanks for all your suggestions.

POST 6Original post

this sorta stuff worries me... there clearly are issues with the 996. its not a cheap car run as things go wrong. tricky stuff.
