The front tyres have been replaced once, the rear tyres have been replaced twice and I have not yet changed the brake pads (front or rear).

Suggestion
By the time you factor in the major service (every 24k/2y), the fluid change (every 24k/2y), the spark plug change (at 48k) and the minor service (every 24k/2, staggered from the major), air bag check (4y?), it probably does work out about 700 / year.
Leading evidence: 'Replace brake pads (front or rear)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check (4y?)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
By the time you factor in the major service (every 24k/2y), the fluid change (every 24k/2y), the spark plug change (at 48k) and the minor service (every 24k/2, staggered from the major), air bag check (4y?), it probably does work out about 700 / year.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I am thinking of getting a 2002/52 996 (targa) with around 50k on the clock.
When I had a look at the paper work the previous owner(s) seemed to be spending in the region of 500/700 quid per service (i.e. once a year more or less). Lots of coil packs being replaced it seems...
Excluding
insurance
, tax and depreciation, what would people consider a reasonable average running cost on this car?
Thanks for your advice!

It's not unusual for a coil pack to be changed once or twice over 50k miles, but not on a regular basis...I would be a little concerned if it was being done every year
Cheers,
GD
PS - I would budget 2k / year, including OPC warranty + incidentals. You can save quite a bit by going to a reputable Indy, in which case about 1.5k / year.
whats your projected mileage for the year?
Replacement tyres about £1k. Break pads and discs another £1k. Servicing depends where you take it but I reckon £500. Waranty £895, 111 point check I think about £125. Petrol ....who knows what we will be paying.
I think I've been quite conservative here.
Even so not bad numbers apart from tyres and break pads and discs. And those are dependent on your driving style.
So thats the cost per year. But the enjoyment of the car is worth a lot more.
actually come to think of it there is a bit more to add.
Detailing costs depends on who and what is done. Optional to do but recomended.
Stone chip resprays I think about £800 for front bumper, could be wrong and not sure if you need to do it yearly. Depends how chipped your bumper and bonnets are, if the primer has been chipped off etc.
and so long as you don't thrash it too much you'll get 20 mpg urban with it like me - my 996 is an everyday car. the drop in mpg when driven as it should be however is well worth it when the mood takes you!
I'm a fairly low mileage driver (around 4k per year) so hopefully that should keep costs down.
I think (will double-check) that the breaks & tires have been recently changed. How often (in time / miles) do these normally have to be replaced?
The dealership is offering a 6M warranty and PPI - is it normally OK to just go with their warranty, or should I be insisting on an OPC inspection / warranty? The dealership seems to have a good rep. on these and other boards...
Thanks,
Adam
IMO Insist on OPC warranty, a discount from them for not taking out the 6 month warranty and buy on condition that 111 point check is ok from Porsche.
Remember though that some things aren't covered in the OPC warranty, like audio and sat nav systems.
You do need to factor in tyres and brakes. I would consider myself to be an average to quick driver, but I don't track my car. It does 10k miles / year.
The front tyres have been replaced once, the rear tyres have been replaced twice and I have not yet changed the brake pads (front or rear). My car has now done 45k miles and is coming up to 5 years old.
Wouldn't recommend having less than 2.5mm of tread on your tyres, preferably 3mm.
If you check your local opc website they tend to have a fixed price menu servicing which will give you an idea of costs. I have a 2002 Targa with 78000 and its just come back from its (yearly) minor service,(I do around 12000 a year) it came to just over £400. Last year was a major at around £700, this included a few odds and sods like 3 coils, and a brake fluid change. TYres as others have said vary, depending on your choice I have the Contis. I got a good deal on the last 2 rears (£185 each)! They seem to last the year just about(fronts still look new though). Do factor in a good can of silicon grease for the roof!
Happy Hunting
I'd budget for 2-3 grand per year. A clutch will last 20 to 30,000 miles and there goes £1,500 for a start whether or not you have an extended warranty. If you don't have the warranty, you'll have to hold back another £800 +VAT in case the RMS goes - if it does, get the clutch changed at the same time, regardless. It will save the labour at 6 or 7 hours having it done separately. Then there's the new flywheel every 2 clutches as it's the dual mass one.
My car's done 50k miles, and it appears to be on the original clutch.
I've done 23k miles this year- here are my costs.
A 12k cost me £160, a 48k plus 2 coils was £488.
2 sidelight bulbs (LEDs) £12
New battery £140?
I also had the brakes and pads changed, but they could probably have lasted longer if I'd not been fussy.
And don't forget lots of lovely shell v-power at an average of about 28mpg.
FWIW, my approx costs for 1st 12 months with my 2002 C4S (~7K miles):
Minor service - £350
Set of rears Michelin Pilot sports - £500
MOT - £50
2 headlight bulbs - £15
OPC warranty renewal - £900
I think this year will be a £500+ service but I wont need rear tyres (maybe fronts @ £350 though). So again it'll be about £2K unless something non-warranty needs fixing.
