Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So that can be done, but I don't believe a later 3.2 has been swapped into a 996.2 before.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was thinking is it possible to use a 3.4 block in a 3.6 rebuild ? The 3.4 generally has better cylinder condition. Will the timing guides vario can plus heads for the 3.4 block?

POST 2Original post

They r 2 very different motors. The chain layout and variocam system r the 2 major issues.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes I understand one is a 5 chain and the Vario cam is different. My question is can the parts from a damage 3.6 fit in a 3.4 block? Bores are the same size just a longer stroke to make it 3.6.

POST 5Original post

The engine case, crank, crank carrier, rods, IMS shaft, AOS, cams, and cylinder heads are not compatible. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong) The pistons might work. They would have to be closely evaluated. The oil pump, windage tray, sump plate, flywheel, oil pressure/oil level/knock/crank sensors are compatible. The external accessories(alternator, AC compressor, PS pump) are compatible.

POST 6Original post

You cant run a 3.4 with 3.6 heads. To run a complete 3.4 you will have to also swap engine wiring and a 3.4 ECU, immobilizer, and keys. You will need a 3.4 pressure plate. There may be other items required.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 19719160

The crank could be used but thats about it. U would never reuse pistons from a used motor into a used block (or even a reconditioned one). There u issues with ovaling of cylinder walls and coating capatibility. Im also pretty sure the piston specs r different.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So you are saying you cant use 3.4 case halves to make a 3.6 motor ?

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 19719989

Correct, the M96/03 (3.6) AOS mounting point on the block is different than the one for the M96/01, M96/02, M96/04.(3.4). If you were to instead use a 3.4 AOS, the mount point on the M96/03 cylinder heads would be incorrect. You might be able to use a 3-chain 3.2 liter block (M96/23 or M96.25) from a later Boxster. Another option is to replace the M96/03 completely with one of the later 3.2s. I don't know if it's been done before though. Someone HAS swapped a used early 3.2 into a 996.1 that had a 3.4. So that can be done, but I don't believe a later 3.2 has been swapped into a 996.2 before.

POST 10Original post

3-chain AOS mount points, both case & cylinder head: 5-chain AOS mount point cylinder head: 5-chain AOS mount point case: 3-chain AOS mounted: (mounted directly to cylinder head & via hose to block) 5-chain AOS mounted: (mounted directly to block and via hose to cylinder head) There are other issues I can think of (crank carrier) but these are easy to see.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19719989

U can absolutely bore out a 3.4l motor to a 3.6 when performing a full rebuild (using all 3.4l parts), but when u put it into your mk2 car u will need the entire wiring harness, dme, some different cooling hoses and a bunch of other small items. The bottom line is most of the parts between the 2 motors r different. It doesnt make any sence to mix or match any of them. If your 3.6l block is not salvagable there r used blocks with bore score and even factory short blocks available, a factory 3.4l should not be on your list.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 19719989

Well, have read here of machining 3.4 cases/crank carrier to accept the 3.6 crank, to stroke' the 3.4 into a 3.6. That is doable with some degree of expensive case work that will take someone experienced with this mod. Or a lot of trial by error... Problem you'll run into is all used m96 loco-sil defective structure 1 time use cylinders/cases, by rebuild time, unfortunately are way out of round/tapered. Even if looking perfect to the eye with no scoring visible wear. If you're considering using a used (non sleeved) m96 block/cases, do yourself a favor. Invest in a cheap bore gauge and see for yourself. specs are max .0035" out of round/taper, which is considerably more than all other blocks I'm familiar with....
