I think a sub is ultimately needed but that's likely to be a custom job (cab, very few places to put a sub) but these guys do coupé, targa and cab installs (you can also buy the parts direct to have installed by your local fitter or do it yourself):

Looks a very nice, clean interesting install and I note that they've installed some subs in the space behind the rear seats.

Haven't got door speakers in mine yet, std fit was only front and rear so i changed those, the custom install that prestige do uses the door speakers to put subs into so at some point i'll be looking to do that.

A local ICE specialist said that they couldnt fit me a new stereo without ripping out and replacing a lot of fibre optics...expensive and complicated apparently.

I have asked this question before on this forum - if you find out how the Porsche Becker CDR-23 can be easily (and by that I mean cheaply) replaced with another stereo.....let me know.....I want to fit a stereo with full iPod compatibility and blue tooth.

I guess the little microphone in the middle of the dash is for the phone car kit (mine is next to the courtesy light in the roof), which is probably a better location for it, as it's very difficult to hear me speak through the carkit when travelling 60mph+.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
Happy New Year to you all, trust you all had a nice break over the festive period!
Right, question time. The BOSE system in the 996, what does it consist of exactly? Does it include amps?..and if so, where are these mounted? I've been meaning to check out my friends 996 with the BOSE system but havn't had the chance to over Xmas...but he assures me the diff in sound is worth it.
I only ask as my head unit is starting to play up and doesn't read the CD's all the time, so i'm thinking of getting the Becker Grand Prix sooner rather than later now. I'm just wondering if this head unit has enough power to run uprated speakers?
Cheers
Taran
Happy new year to you too.
Anyway, the bose system consists of more speakers, an amp and a sub. Sounds v good to my unpracticed ear, especially when combined with the other racket going on... The amp, I think is under the bonnet somewhere, but I'm probably wrong.
I'd personally upgrade to a Grandprix rather than sticking with the CDR22. I'm pretty sure the GP is more powerful than the CDR22.
Those wot know about these things say there are better aftermarket kits than the Bose- Damian who posts on here upgraded his so no doubt could give you tips.
I understand that the Bose system does include an Amp but this isnt your main issue if you want to change your stereo to the Becker Grand Prix. I am told that the Porsche Becker CDR-23 system uses fibre optics...that are integrated into other electrical stuff in the car and therefore it is not straight forward in fitting a replacement (the Porsche Becker unit is not standard). Good luck and dont forget to let us (me) know
Taran,
Damian's probably the best to answer this completely as he's done some whizzy speaker upgrades on his GT3 but... I've replaced the stock CR-22 (yes cassette
) with a becker grand prix unit (and ipod lead) running a JL Audio amp and uprated JL Audio speakers speakers and the sound is good (certainly way better than standard). I think a sub is ultimately needed but that's likely to be a custom job (cab, very few places to put a sub) but these guys do coupé, targa and cab installs (you can also buy the parts direct to have installed by your local fitter or do it yourself):

I've not used these guys (yet) so don;t have any experience of their service or products..
The BOSE amp as i understand it is in the boot, top right.
True, but only for post-2003 MY cars fitted with MOST as standard. Pre facelift would be fine, and I think Taran's is. Yours can still be upgraded, but as you say, more complex.

Looks a very nice, clean interesting install and I note that they've installed some subs in the space behind the rear seats.
I personally use the space behind the rear seats as they are very accessable through the rear hatchback (the main reason why I bought the Targa), so wouldn't want to lose this space ...but I know that you lose one of the speakers in the Cab/Targa OEM install anyway.
I guess the little microphone in the middle of the dash is for the phone car kit (mine is next to the courtesy light in the roof), which is probably a better location for it, as it's very difficult to hear me speak through the carkit when travelling 60mph+.
Not sure what the white unit is in the last picture (taken through the hatchback), as I thought this particular Pioneer unit had bluetooth phone and GPS built in.
Great stuff guys.
Robertb, your correct, mine's a 98 pre-facelift with the CR21 (i think) single-slot CD head unit. I have 6 speakers in total...4 up front and 2 at the back. How many speakers does the BOSE consist of...more than 6?
Tim, thanks for that. Yeh I saw Damian's i think, was he the one who installed MB Quarts? How are you finding your JL's? Have you heard a BOSE system to compare? Also, what sort of price did you pay for the speakers and amp if you don't mind me asking?
I don't really want to go down the custom fit sub-enclosure route and just want to find component speakers that offer good mid-range Bass as well as clarity.
So am i right in assuming the Becker simply slots into the void left by the standard head unit...or is it more complex?
Taran :?:
)really like the JL Audio's, they're the same size as the standard (6x4"??) and were reco'd by the local ICE specialist here, he said that a lot of the top end fits they did used them (rather the saxo boys wanting a sub and sumfink wikkid to shake your fillings loose
). They're good for all music genre but get a little overfaced when there's a lot of electronic bass (dance, hip hop), rock is probably where they excel. A sub should sort that out though its just finding a place without losing a back seat or the frankly useless door pockets (that the gf thinks are useful incidentally, although i do keep the sun tan lotion in there for those summer days we get twice a year
Paid about £950 for the amp and 2 sets of speakers and soundproofing material, leads and fitting etc (amp was £250, speakers were about £230 per pair from memory)
Thanks Tim.
JL's are defo higher end components and have come across their amps in some of my friends ICE installations. You say you bought two sets of speakers...i take it these were for the dash and doors? Did you change the rears at all? I'm just wondering if the rear speaker space could be used for sub enclosures or speakers that give more bass rather than tweet?
Lastly, have you heard the standard BOSE system? If so, how does it compare to yours?
(PS I know what you mean about the door pockets...however mine are currently crammed with an A to Z on the pasenger side..and about 30 CD's on the driver side...damn the single slot head unit!)
Taran
ipod is the way forward Taran
Haven't got door speakers in mine yet, std fit was only front and rear so i changed those, the custom install that prestige do uses the door speakers to put subs into so at some point i'll be looking to do that.
prestige used to do a shallow sub to go in the rears (and the surrounds for them too) but they don;t offer that anymore. If you rang they could probably fabricate a kit.
Sadly don;t have any experience of the BOSE...
Oh ok. I knew i had an 'uprated' system of sorts, but didn't know which speakers were the extras!
The Becker plays MP3 too doesn't it? Do you use the Bluetooth phone function on it? Any good?
I'll have to talk to Prestige and see what they can offer. A friend of mine has an ICE shop so i'll probably buy and fit everything through him anyway, but will defo pick Prestige's minds. I'll report back on what both say and then take it from there.
Must get around to my mates and listen to the BOSE sytem first though, see just how good it is. Then again, finding the BOSE speakers/amps etc at a reasonable price ain't gonna be easy either....
Taran
@tazsura - Hi
I've recently upgraded my CR-11  to a Becker Cascade pro with IPOD connection (fitted for £900) - The Audio centre fitted in 45 mins, I understand that the connections are the pretty much the same - save for one wire that needs sorting to allow an amp (if you have one), I have standard speakers in mine ('98 996 C2) and the sound is great and 100% better than the CR-11. note that the unit also needs a GPS arial (for the navigation) and a phone mic, mine are fitted under the dash and top of the window pillar respectively.
You can however fit a phone mic into the grill in the dash but I found that this was too far away and had them move it to the window pillar.
Link to this system below - its OEM and doesn't look out of place
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyJq0UnSx8I
Bluetooth works fine and you can also put a phone SIM in the unit if you are inclined.
IPOD link works with 3rd, 4th & 5th generation and have tried mine with the latest NANO and IPHONE and both work and are controlled by the unit once connected
Post a reply if you need any more info.

to be honest i've not tried it, keep threatening to cut a disc with hundreds of MP3 tracks on but i've got my old 10 gb ipod in the car permanently hooked up so there seems little point really.
Will be interested to see if prestige still do the rear subs, let me know how you get on? cheers
