While installing the Remote Key modification I discovered two helpful tips.
First, the install directions supplied with the unit are very good. Some of the best that I have ever had. The only problem is the printing and photos are very small so it is best to go to the Wilhelmy web site and get the install directions there with enlarged photos. I just kept my laptop nearby to reference from time to time. Now for the tips:
1. When you are extracting the individual connector pins from the small connector blocks you will need to depress the locking "barb" twice. Once to unlock the pin from its original position and a second time as you are pulling the wire/pin out, the barb will catch on a slot in the connector block. I found a small awl worked best for extracting the pins. Also, work on one connector at a time and wrap the extracted pins with electrical tape as you free them from the connector block. Replace the small connector block into the large block after you have extracted the yellow and black wires and then move on to the other connector.
2. I found that there just wasn't enough length of yellow and black wire to allow me to properly stash the remote key device away in a secure and secluded space up above the fuse block. The problem was with the wires on the car side (lower connector) wiring bundle not being able to reach up there without totally removing them from the wiring harness bundle. Luckily the extracted connector pins on this side are the male set with a long, thin pin protruding out. I cut about 6 inches of 16 gauge speaker wire and split the pair into individual wires. I next stripped off about 1/4" of insulation and spread the individual strands of exposed wires back over the insulation (this is so you don't jab yourself with a wire strand in the next step). I then shoved the pin inside the insulated wire and spread the exposed wire strands back over the connector. Lastly I topped it off with some heat shrink tube to seal the deal. This makes a perfect connection without damaging any parts so it is completely reversible. I now had plenty of wire to move the unit safely and securely out of the way.
I really like this mod. It was easy to install and works as expected right out of the box. Now if we can only change the pathetic "chirp" from our lousy horn (see my tirade in the Cayman Chat section).
