Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone, I was using my 996 in the morning and all seemed fine. Once I started the engine again in the afternoon, there was a 'ticking' noise that became faster when revving up. At some point also the engine light went on very shortly and the engine stopped running. After that the sound was still there and got a bit quieter as the engine became warmer. I had a look at the oil pressure gauge and could not see anything strange. Does anyone have an idea what this might be caused by? Thanks a lot.

POST 2Original post

it may be a tappet, especially if your oil level is low. have you checked that?

POST 3Original post

A loose spark plug is another possibility, but I would get it checked out sooner rather than later.

POST 4Original post

On my Carrera it had a light tapping noise (like a screwdriver tapping on the rocker cover) that increased in speed along with the engine speed and it was a loose spark plug. However there was no EML on and the engine ran fine all the time apart from the noise.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Turns out the matter was quite serious and the cylinder lining was scratched on cylinder 1 and 2. I am getting all cylinders relined and the engine rebuild at the moment. My warranty (warranty direct) concluded it was caused by debris entering the engine. Funny enough there are neither signs of debris entering the engine nor travelling through it nor leaving it....
