Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Turned out to be a worn bearing on the water pump.
Leading evidence: 'worn bearing' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'worn bearing' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect by a specialist' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

just got my 1st 996, a 60k miles '99 model and its a brilliant car... got it inspected by a specialist before i got it... when i drove it back to belfast, i noticed the engine was slightly tappety... its a very light tap at idle that speeds up as i rev and don't really hear it above 2500 rpm... never really goes away throughout the journey... can't hear it from inside... its it normal for these engines to sound like that... i thought the hydraulic lifters should be quiet...
Mine was making a slight "tappety" noise a little while a go which got worse. Turned out to be a worn bearing on the water pump.
Not sure if this will be your problem, however it will be the issue if it turns into a VW beetle type engine sound!! You will definitely know what I mean if you hear it.
mine is more like someone tapping the rocker cover with a screwdriver... it hasn't got worse or louder and by 2000rpm i can't hear it... spoke to a couple of specialist, apparently the noise in related to the tappets and can occur with age in these engines... it can disappear spontaneously sometimes...
that's it, its not so much tappety as a very light tick, tick tick like someone is tapping the rocker cover lightly with a screw driver... 3 people who know these cars say its nothing to worry about... it hasn't got any louder or worse... no doubt the opc will ask me to replace all the valve train when its in for a service
noise now sorted... booked into belfast opc for major service and told them to have a look... turned out a spark plug was slightly loose... new plugs in and no damage done... all running smoothly now... engine sounds great again
