The only feasible and quick fix was to simply pour liquid silicon gasket carefully down by these spaces (you can take the bumper off--a 30-60 min job) and let it set around the openings so that water would not get in.

I think the sides are a little bit to squared off to use without the additional wing that’s made to be mounted to it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1Original post

Hi all! Do any of you have a 987.1 with a Getty ducktail spoiler? I see a ton of pictures of Caymans with the ducktail spoiler, but I havent seen any Boxsters with it. I know you can swap out the spoiler from a Cayman to a Boxster , but I just cant envision what a ducktail would look like on a 987.1 Boxster . I feel some angles would look great, while others, not so much. Thanks! CJ

POST 3Original post

I do. However mine is a Cayman. I would warn you however you will have to be mechanically handy and crafty mod-wise if you decide to order the spoiler; I ordered it and safe to say it was the worse piece (out of the box) I have put on my Cayman yet. Quality wise the spoiler was lacking in almost every area; it leaked tremendous amounts of water in through their thick immovable steel brackets (which, of course, were not trimmed flush to the body lines and required cutting) and I had to devise a system of tubes to funnel the water out, not to mention sealing up the bracket from the outside with silicon gasket (a quick fix until years later when I come back and make a permanent, aesthetically pleasing gasket). However, once everything else was fixed, it is perhaps the most beautiful ducktail I have ever seen designed for the Cayman/Boxster lineup, and I did an extensive amount of research before buying it, comparing it to ducktails that simply bolt onto the stock rising wing or ones that require drilling into the back hatch.

POST 4Original post

@John Cary that's interesting. I appreciate the feedback. Based on their website, I thought it just bolted onto the "tray" on the underside of the stock Cayman spoiler. I've already purchased that "tray" piece and the accompanying required bolts, as it was relatively inexpensive, and am just trying to decide which spoiler I actually want to go with. Where was this water coming form you speak of? Are you saying that it leaked in between the top portion of the spoiler and the part that it bolts directly to? Interested in how you fixed these issues and what it looked like, I am pretty mechanically inclined so have no issues with tinkering. Thanks again!

POST 5Original post

So, in order to mount the ducktail, you have to remove the factory spoiler entirely, including the motor that is inside of the trunk (which in turn requires taking out, at bare minimum, all of the trunk carpet to access the bolts securing it in place, or even taking out all of the rear interior trim, which is a nightmare). Once the motor/stock wing is out you are left with two holes that the factory risers go in and out of; the new brackets that Getty sends protrude out of these holes and are secured by two bolts/nuts. Then the ducktail spoiler, which has aluminum stalks molded into it, fits down into the brackets and is secured by another bolt in each bracket. So sorry to say you will have to ditch your factory setup if you want to go this route. Additionally, with the stock motor removed, the ECU will have to be programmed by a local Porsche mechanic with the factory computer to ignore the loss of the motor function (if not, it will make beeping noises if you drive the car over 75 mph, the speed at which it normally rises on its own). Once the brackets are in place however they are a very, very rough fit. There are spaces in between the brackets and body panel where any rain water can leak down and through these spaces and get underneath your carpet in the trunk. The only feasible and quick fix was to simply pour liquid silicon gasket carefully down by these spaces (you can take the bumper off--a 30-60 min job) and let it set around the openings so that water would not get in. You also are correct that water also leaks between the aluminum stalks and the brackets; the factory design also had this problem but Porsche engineered it so that water would exit through the trunk by means of rubber tubes mounted to the bottom of the risings. However, the problem with the Getty Design brackets is that they are too short for the OEM rubber tubes to reach (by about 2.5" if I remember correctly), and so you will have to rig up and splice other rubber tube from the bottom of Getty's brackets to the OEM rubber tubes. There are, however, bolt-on ducktail wings that can fit directly up to the stock risers like you imagine; some look a little funky and that is why I chose to have a direct bolt-on wing. If you still want to retain the factory motor I can try and find some options for you.

POST 6Original post

That is crazy. The way the website shows it, it's like it bolts to the current bottom. Not sure I want to deal with that nightmare. There was another spoiler I thought I'd seen on Ebay that looked half decent, that was like $300, but still debating. If you know of any spoilers that do bolt up, I'd appreciate it! CJ

POST 7Original post

All these wings and wing bases should just need to mount to a screw on each side of the hatch… if you remove the rubber grommet adjusters, that’s exactly where the two holes need to be to hold it on… the two big holes left by the lame @ss oem wing can be left open, moisture has always ran down those and under the car with the old wing still still on. I actually took some CF vinyl and covered them up…. I’m not a duck bill wing guy but Getty design has some goofy ways of mounting chit… here is an NR-auto.. it’s an actual GT3 wing on aluminum uprights and a Tech-Art base

POST 8Original post

I found this on ebay, it is carbon but you could obviously paint over that. To my knowledge it is a direct bolt-on. It is a ducktail look but IMO is less ducktail and more whale-tail because of how far it protrudes out rather than up. Carbon Fiber Ducktail Spoiler Strosek Style for 987 Porsche Cayman Boxster 06-12 | eBay I also have a follower that makes ducktail wings for Caymans. His username on Instagram is garyfoowengyew and he has a Google Form in his bio to order the Ducktail. It seems from this Google Form he says that the wing simply is attached to the stock wing by double-sided tape, so whether that would be of interest is up to you. Hope these leads help.

POST 9Original post

Greatly appreciated the leads! I actually really like the ducktail from Gary Foo, but unfortunately the shipping alone is like $500 or something. I'll see what I can figure out🤷 thanks again!

POST 10Original post

Just a thought - the "Sport Design" body kit for the 987.1 Boxsters I believe came with a ducktail spoiler from the factory. Pictures I've seen it looked decent (let me see if I can find one..) From: Porsche Boxster 987 - The Story - Stuttcars Unfortunately, I can't find one showing it retracted.. It does appear the bumper cover is also modified to have a lip that forms a channel with the spoiler raised, so I'm guessing this is actually a functional spoiler rather than for looks. I have one. I think it’s the best looking ducktail they have. I do like the Getty RS base, for the most part. I think the sides are a little bit to squared off to use without the additional wing that’s made to be mounted to it. when I first saw my duck tail I was not too impressed with it raw. And according to the body shop it took a lot of work to get it looking good. But the end result came out very well.

POST 12Original post

Looking almost like my twin (in a lighter color, of course)! In all of the research and forum browsing I have done I have never come across anyone else with the Getty ducktail until now.

POST 13Original post

I really do like the subtlety of the rear spoiler with the Sport design.

POST 14Original post

Hers my ducktail from Gary Foo the workmanship is fantastic. Just need to wait for my stripe to arrive and the decide if I need to move the badges to the rear bumper or leave them on the trunk

POST 15Original post

That looks good! Real 72 RS looking. I still wish the hatch was more flat/flush but oh well..
