I know i blew my engine in my cobra a few times running to much boost but it still only costs $8-$10,000 for everything and i was making over 800hp and running 10 sec 1/4 mile times.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

<div>Hi,
Reading various Cayman forums, I have seen 4 tuning shops (thus far) doing the 3.8L motor transplants:
RUF ($40,000, Texas), FVD (Florida), Farnbacher Loles (Florida) and Orton Performance ($22,900, Georgia).
I have not seen pricing for FVD or FL. If anyone knows what they are, please share. Also, is there someone else out there doing the 3.8L motor transplants? I have to think that with time, the competition on this mod will get pretty intense.
Thanks for the education.

Eurocar Boutique also does a swap but with a non-Porsche engine.

Most important though is Farnbacher is the only one so far that...includes a LSD tramission.
9ff si in the States I believe, but where? Do we know their prices?
Agreed with the
LSD
comments. However, I think that mod is also a matter of time. I don't think that's very difficult to do technically.

According to a recent issue of Excellence mag, the FarnbacherLoles x51 conversion is $39,500. That does not include the limited slip. Also, the mag says they are in CT, not FL.
Dave
Correction: while the mag says they are in CT, I see their advertisement shows them with facilities in both CT and FL.

You know whats crazy about this... Don't get me wrong i love my Porsche andam in favor of doing performance work to it but I come from a past where all i had was mustangs. Do you have any idea what kind of motor you can get for $40,000 or even $25,000. I know i blew my engine in my cobra a few times running to much boost but it still only costs $8-$10,000 for everything and i was making over 800hp and running 10 sec 1/4 mile times. I know its not apples to apples comparing a ford motor to a Porsche but come on 40k for a 3.8 liter?!?!? thats crazy and to boot its not really doing much to that the car. I could understand if it was making these cars a compete with the new turbo but its not. Any way thats my opinion.
OK there is a perfect example of cost efficient HP. I absolutely hate those annoying Honda's and what not but those kids are putting little 2.0 liter engines with a big turbo and are going pretty darn fast in some cases for 5k. I spend more then that on gas in my boat.
Kenny,
I don't have the link here, but on another forum, someone posted that his Porsche dealer will do a 3.8L motor transplant for $16k total, ($13k for the motor). That's the lowest I have seen. Of course, that does not come with the other goodies (
headers
, exhausts,
ECU
etc.) that the other tuners include in their package.
CP
Oh i hear ya and don't get me wrong its not about the money, its about justifying what you are getting for the money. Think about it i got my Cayman loaded, paid over 75K for it as I'm sure most of you did. Add the cost for the 3.8 and you could have got the 06 GT3 which is amazing and wicked fast and needs nothing. Thats all.
Kenny,
That may be true. But then every body here will tell you that the
Cayman S
, being a mid-engine car, will perform better than the GT3 (rear-engined) given similar HP.
CP
CP
Good point and i don't disagree. I want to see the evolution of the Cayman to see if Porsche will ever product a GT version of like they do with GT3 RS. I personally think i jumped the gun buying the cayman over the GT3. I also bought a new house that same month so i wasn't in the mood to caught up the extra 40k. Be that as it may i love my cayman and it beautiful. I guess i can describe it as Cabernet vs Syrah.. all depends on what your in the mood for

'
Honestly I will have to disagree with this statement. Although you may have a 3.8L motor it is by no means a 3.6 GT3 motor... there are some serious changes to get that amount of power. Also, the technology in that vehicle would still take a
Cayman S
with 355 hp or even 381 HP...
Although I would love a Cayman GT or RS whatever they would badge. I also agree that some would prefer a mid-engine setup for track driving... but to say the engine swap makes it into a track machine is a little off IMO.

Nick,
My comments are somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I was referring to the passion on this board, that the
Cayman S
is a superior car to all comers (almost).
CP
we can speculate on.... if this.. what about that... how come this....etc.... Bottom line is we all here are cayman owners and darn proud. Our little crock my not as balls to the wall as the RS or any other of its big brothers but its a great car and I'll drive my proudly...untill my lease is up and i get the GT3
Kenny,
There isn't getting around the fact that the 9ff and Ruf options are essentially a cost-benefit
nightmare.
The 9ff puts you past the 911TT price? I've no idea what they're thinking, but it isn't rational nor justified...but, it is exclusive and exclusivity is worth the $$ for a lot of people.
Paul
true true and i got the humor. I defiantly agree with the passion for Porsche and the
Cayman S
.... I had my car for sale for 2 months before giving up and waiting until next yea ..
The X51 conversion is expensive and probably not cost effective. However, I did it anyways and believe me theconvertedCS is very fast and a completely different car.
Cayman in CT
jgiusto,
Who converted it, FL? And what did you do other than just drop a straight 3.8 in there? Also, how is it different? Please give us a before/after review.

The car was converted by FarnbacherLoles in Danbury, CT. Their workmanship is first rate. It is truly a professional install.
As far as performance though the CS stock is an outstanding ride. However adding an additional 100HP brings the performance to another level. The engine has outstanding torque. To be honest it pulls like a train. The responsiveness and handling of the stock car remain however with the additional power everything just happens faster.
I left the car completely stealth. Other than the custom
exhaust
sticking out the backof the car it appears stock. I also added the
LSD
.I will be adding a Cross Adjustable Suspension, larger oil sumpand larger sway bars in the near future. Of course there are a number of other engineering changes necessary. I wish it was aseasy as just putting the engine in the car. Also there is Revo stage 1 software package installed.
I respect everyones opinion of the cost versus benefit . However unless you actually drive an X51 conversion it is difficult to realize just how quick and how much fun to drive a mid-engine 400HPCS can be.
Cayman in CT
Dan Jacobs in OxfordCT also does the conversions at 23k for the 3.8S including install and you keep the Cayman engine. The
3.8 X51
installis 29K.
These installs are done by myself in which I haveperformed thefirst Boxster conversions for FVD in the USA and first Cayman conversions for some of the companies listed.
