So, rather than having my mechanic replace the transmission mount bushings and risk possible misalignment, I had him replace the entire transmission mount.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All, have a quick question.
Porsche 996.2 C2, Automatic gearbox.
Have this slight clunk sound from the rear on/off gas at slow speeds ( 40- 50 km/h ) Can be heard here -

Any suggestions? The driveshaft, U-joints, bearings? Taking to the mechanic next week to see what we can find.
Based on description I would have guessed CV joints but video sound seems to be a gearbox noise, can you get car up on a lift and get under car to better locate the noise?

The noise in my '03 996 Tiptronic was a thunk when I abruptly accelerated. The noise was caused by the transmission mount bushings that had severely deteriorated. I had already replaced the engine mounts, which did not solve the problem. So, rather than having my mechanic replace the transmission mount bushings and risk possible misalignment, I had him replace the entire transmission mount. I figured that the labor cost to press the old bushings out and then press in the new bushings it would be the same cost as the price of the new mount.
I hope this helps.
Had a chance to lift the car, and checked the engine mounts - solid, transmission mount look good too. Tried to find anything that could move around and make the clunk noise, didn't find anything. Everyting looks dry and in good shape. Will take a car to the transmission service and do diagnostics.
At this point, I think most likely its transmission.
I took the car to another shop, lifted it, and inspected everything. We found this (video), and I'm fairly certain it's the cause of the slight clunk or thump when lightly pressing the gas pedal—whether accelerating or decelerating. It seems there's some movement in the gearbox. Has anyone experienced this issue and can offer insight into what it might be?
