Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I searched around a little bit and didn't see anything on this topic. Sometimes when I'm backing out of my parking space and turn the wheel (to either side, it doesn't matter) I feel like I'm running over a big piece of gravel or something. I feel the bump through the whole steering wheel and even in my seat. It makes a thump noise. My passenger noticed it the other day and thought I ran something over. Nothing... I haven't experienced this phenomenon in any other car. Is there something I shold know about the cayman's front end? Anyone else experience this? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

I believe this occurs when the wheel is turned hard one direction or the other.

POST 3Original post

Can you replicate the symptom? I would have someone standing outside while you backing up slowly with hard steering to see where the noise comes from. I assume that you use stock tires and rims with no wheel spacers.

POST 4Original post

If it is a hard turn either way when you are backing the noise is noticeable. Straighten out a bit and should go away. Happens to me all the time. It is the steering at it's limits and nothing wrong with the car.

POST 5Original post

it's also more pronounced when the temperature is cold. the tires almost "hop" because the tread blocks are soooo stiff.

POST 6Original post

I've heard this is caused by a power steering line. It is a known problem. To my knowledge no fix has been announced.

POST 7Original post

This happens to my car as well regardless of the temperature. When i took my car into the dealership to get the "trunk clunk" fixed, i started to mention this to my service rep and before i could finish my sentance, he said it is normal. Happens to me when i almost lock the wheel. I really notice this in my underground parking at work where turns are very tight. Does this happen on all Caymans , or just the unlucky ppl.?

Santa Fe, That was funny. You politely redirected me to another thread about this topic, that could have been found by searching. In that thread, you also politely pointed the membership to yet another older thread discussing the same thing. I had to click that one to see how deep the hole might run...... I was half expecting to find a link from you pointing to the latest thread which would have me running circles.....
