Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dilemma is.... My key fob has been rigged for a while (but working) and has now finally given up the ghost. The little prongs that hold the battery in place have worn out and broken off. I've been using a tiny piece of wire and copper tape to complete the power circuit but want to sort it out properly. Multipart question 1: Can I just swap circuit boards, leave the original "pill", and have it work? Or do I need to pull out my PIWIS and code the circuit board? I do have all of the porsche provided IPAS codes for my car, can I use them to program a circuit board from a used key? Do I absolutely need the codes on the white tag to program any key, new or old? Question 2: I have 2 button keys; wonder if I can buy a 3 button key and program the third button to open the engine lid?? Just a thought. 2004 C4S with the electric acuators for the frunk and decklid. Any solid input is much appreciated. Cheers.

POST 2Original post

A new circuit board will need to be coded into the immobilizer for the remote unlock to work, requiring the IPAS code and the white tag code from the fob. If you don't do this programming step, the swapped pill is still able to start the car. The white tag head codes are mandatory for coding the remote unlock. If you purchase a used keyhead without these, you're pretty much out of luck. If you have an existing keyfob the code can be recovered by dumping the immobilizer's memory, but this is a nontrivial activity (requires removing hardware components). https://github.com/bdm310/996-Immobilizer

ok, thanks. So it sounds like a new key with a tag is really the only way to go. Can a 3 button key be used, with the spare button opening the engine cover?

POST 4Original post

No idea, I've got a 1 button 2000, with a 2 button remote it does detect the second button press but isn't wired up to actuate anything. Would similarly expect a 3 button fob to be able to detect all 3 transmissions, but if the immobilizer doesn't have the connections to actuate anything then I don't think it would work. If opening the engine bay via fob worked for any 996 model then maybe this is something supported, but I've not looked into it myself.
