I'm not sure if the guides I need to replace are the "actuator guides" or not, but I'm told they can be reached by removing the cam cover without needing to take the engine out.

Unfortunately I waited too long to do it and will need to replace the chain rails as well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's the first detailed chain tensioner replacement video I'm aware of. After driving for a week it has definitely helped to eliminate the dreaded chain rattle on startup. Unfortunately I waited too long to do it and will need to replace the chain rails as well. That will be the next major project. But for now... https://youtu.be/7LsKjJg5ox8

POST 2Original post

Another great vid! Thanks. Other than requiring some patience... that is a nice DIY. I thought there were three (3) tensioners. No?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes there are 3. Check out my previous video for more background/details. https://youtu.be/kei8ffcxjXQ

POST 4Original post

Thanks for making this! I'm looking forward to the chain guide video.

POST 5Original post

there is another tensioner on top next to the AC compressor. It may be part of the issue also,.? Frank

Thank you for taking the time to share your mechanical adventures and help the rest of us determine if we want to follow you down a particular path. Did you measured the cam deviations before / after the tensioner change?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did not do the before, but I will be doing the after in a little bit

Do you know which chain guide components you are going to be replacing? I started hearing chain noise a couple of months ago and stopped driving the car. I decided I wanted a lift to make the job easier since there was a high probability I would be pulling the engine, and I see myself using it hopefully for many years in the future. My cam deviations on bank 2 are off a bit more than 9 degrees. My hope is to replace the actuator guides and not have to split the block. But I figure I'm going to learn a lot once I get the process started. I get back from vacation this week, there was some delays on the lift I ordered because it was a brand new model from Stratus but I think it should be in my garage in the next week and a half and I'm going to get started. Do you know how far deep your project's going? Are you attempting with the engine in and are you only doing the actuator guides or tearing everything apart?

I'm not sure if the guides I need to replace are the "actuator guides" or not, but I'm told they can be reached by removing the cam cover without needing to take the engine out. I'm also waiting until I get my lift haha. Moving into the new house this coming weekend and then will order the lift, so I'm probably 3-4 weeks out.

They can be done with the engine in the car, I did it...but it caused a lot of cursing.
