My guess is the stat… have it checked, be careful…motor rebuilds are 20k plus
Leading evidence: 'Check be careful…motor rebuilds are 20k plus' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check be careful…motor rebuilds are 20k plus' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I installed center radiator, lower t stat, new water pump and replaced the fan.

I used a scan tool earlier to get an accurate measure of the coolant temp and got a reading of 230F.

Do you know if the thermostat has ever been replaced on your car?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Recently it’s been slightly going above 175F when I’m idling but goes back to normal when driving.
My
2007 Cayman S
with around 82k miles had never had this problem before until just recently. When I would have the car idling wether it be going through a drive-thru or sitting in traffic, the temp gauge would always be right in the middle at 175F. Recently it’s been slightly going above 175F when I’m idling but goes back to normal when driving. The fans still kick on so I’m at a loss why. Perhaps anyone knows or had this happen and just a common thing?
The gauge is highly damped so as to not alarm the general public from the normal temperature swings. You'd need to get the actual temperature from the OBD channel in the computer with a scan tool or mobile phone app to determine if you actually have an issue.
Like red_stapler said, you'd need to get an actual reading from a scan tool to see how hot it's really getting. Could be anything from nothing at all (if it's much hotter than usual out, which seems possible given that's the case in many places right now), to coolant being a bit low, to water pump beginning to fail, or radiators just needing bug guts and leaves removed, or something else entirely.
If you're concerned, first step would be to check coolant via the little door in the trunk (when the car is cold, obviously).
It could be one of the following, thermostat, water pump, temp sensor or worse case HG… if it was the HG, the idle and over characteristics of performance would be chit and your coolant level lamp would be chirping because your getting air into your water system…. My guess is the stat… have it checked, be careful…motor rebuilds are 20k plus
I used a scan tool earlier to get an accurate measure of the coolant temp and got a reading of 230F. Would you consider that high or normal? I live in Phoenix where be high can be 115F on a bad day.
I recently was trying to figure out why my car has been running a little hot. Scan tool showed 230F when at idle but cools down when I’m driving to normal temps. When I was looking in the engine bay I seen this little fan not engaging. Could that be why it’s getting slightly hot when idling?
@Devs98
- I'm merging this posting with your already existing thread on temperature issues on your Cayman. Since they are a part of the same issue, please do not create a new thread each time you find something. That makes it difficult for people to follow a logical path in helping you with a diagnosis.
Hang on..
I believe that's the engine compartment fan. It only comes on when the temperature exceeds a certain point in the engine compartment. It's most likely to happen when idling, or shortly after you shut the engine down in high ambient temps. I rarely hear mine run, and I'd have to guess with the cover removed over the engine your engine compartment temperature sensor isn't reading high enough to trigger that fan. IE - I don't think this is your issue, and I suspect if you leave the car idling long enough in high temps with the engine cover on, you'll hear that fan turn on. If you have a tool like the Durametric of
Foxwell NT530
you should be able to manually trigger that fan to make sure it runs.
I have a ScanGauge II that plugs into the OBD and sits in the bottom clubby slot on center console. It gives you accurate water temps.
The idiot dash water temp gauge won't move above 175 unless you hit 230+ deg. Adding the (
Porsche
) center radiator (
Suncoast
$400) is easy install and lowered water temps by 20 degs.
Oil temp is best way to monitor engine warm up and overtemp but we don't have a oil temp sensor and need to install one (there are posts on that).
and that fan on pass side is for cooling the engine. It should come on if engine compartment ambient is 90+ degs (even if engine is off).
Your engine compartment fan is crucial to keeping your temps in normal range. It’s a mid engine car with little air flow. Mine went out and I noticed increase temps. I installed center radiator, lower t stat, new water pump and replaced the fan. Zero issues and I have 160k miles on my car. Start with the fan and slowly upgrade additional cooling parts. I frequent AZ and I know how hot it gets. I would definitely focus on these areas. Oh and good oil too, I run Joe Gibbs or motul.
Joe Gibbs is the best chit..
Porsche
should have made better heat ventilation and or the engine cover on a flip hing for easier access.. but that fan is vital to cooling escaping
When my fan failed I had no warning light. I had it diagnosed at my local shop. Whether you upgrade or not, I am more of a preventative type with my vehicles. Adding a third radiator and lower t stat is worth the money if you plan on keeping the car for a long period of time. Especially if you live in hotter climates like AZ.
@Devs98
Do you know if the thermostat has ever been replaced on your car? If the radiator fans are working, I would consider the thermostat a very likely culprit. And if you don't have a low temp thermostat, it's probably good to have one anyway since you are in a hot climate. Of course, if you are replacing the thermostat, the water pump replacement is a logical step as well based on age/mileage - assuming it is original.
Good luck and let us know how things go.
