Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is Porsche UK's take on buying one of their own cars second hand. Quote ' And in the shape of the 996, you would be buying a bona fide classic Porsche 911. Here was an all-new, modern 911 whose suspension improvements made it more agile, precise and faster than any 911 that had gone before.' https://www.porsche.com/stories/mobility/porsche-996-buyers-guide Quote ' Those unique headlights, particularly in the first version of 996 cars – which earned them the affectionate nickname 'fried eggs' – have grown into their looks and are very much standout features. ' Not biased much  [/i]

POST 2Original post

The 996 brought the 911 in to the 21st century with the biggest radical improvements in 911 history. Not progressed much at all since then and in some aspects got worse.

POST 3Original post

Thanks for sharing - it's regrettable that Porsche listened too much to the naysayers as I think they've been too retro / conservative in their designs post 996. The clean lines of the 996 are peak modern Porsche for me, especially the wide body cars which I think look timeless. Plus, 996s drive well! I guess the only major weak spot is the standard M96 engine but this is the car (together with the Boxster) which saved Porsche.

POST 4Original post

:hand: M96.1 is the most robust of the M96/M97 engines. Time will will tell on the 9A1 DFI engines.

POST 5Original post

All fixed now but my M96.03 scored its bores. Not an issue if you don't track the M96 but it's susceptible to oil surge too (more so if M96.01). M96.01 could (especially the early ones) crack cylinders ("d chunk"). My 9A1 engined Cayman S was ultra reliable but I enjoy the 996 more.

POST 6Original post

...ffs that's 10 mins I will never get back! Written by a numb nuts with rose tinted specs and a marketing managers brief :nooo: I f'ing despise the narrative of the hipster marketing manager types... ...love my 996.2 however

POST 7Original post

These types of articles will go a long way to help increase the price of these great cars, can only be a good thing regardless.

POST 8Original post

Great unless you are looking to buy one  MC

POST 9Original post

...has the 996 finally come of age? Will we really see values rising as per every one of it's predecessors?

POST 10Original post

Good to read that. I'm still waiting on OPC Newcastle for my classic membership

POST 12Original post

The membership pack comes direct from Porsche Germany.. The OPC just email the form that you filled in so I wouldn't blame Newcastle for the delay.. From memory Lovett's in Bristol sent mine off and it took an age.. as in months to arrive.

POST 13Original post

I think this inevitable. I've got a 1998 996.1 C2 Manual Coupe, and without doubt, its one of the best drivers cars I've ever been in. Many modern cars feel disconnected and souless in comparison. I'm taking mine to CG in late January for an inspection prior to commissioning some suspension refresh work. When you look at the ever growing list of expectations in buyers guides, its got to force the prices up. Without putting too much thought into it: IMS, RMS, Suspension Refresh, Engine Rebuild, Air Con Condensors, etc etc etc Most of those aren't cheap. You can't sustain 15-20k prices with those 'expected to be done' costs. People simply won't sell them.

POST 14Original post

I don't disagree with you, but the '£10k 996" was always a myth, in the sense that a needs nothing manual C2 coupe has always been nearer a £20k car. The wider context of EV, economy and social attitudes to ICE will be interesting for classic and modern classic car values over the next 10-15 years. Could go either way I reckon.

POST 15Original post

Of course, they are already rising. All Porsche sports cars rise in value eventually, it's only a matter of time. Whether they will rise to the silly heights of 964 and 993 remains to be seen...
