Boris, if it actually was caused by a loose gas cap, those codes (as with most emission and safety related ones) don't clear when the fault is corrected.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

So my absolutely babied, 14,000 mile car I wanted to drive today is throwing "visit engine workshop" messages. A scan with durametric shows no fault codes. It runs and sounds fine. Cleared codes anyway, reset service indicator and as soon as it starts back up it displays "visit engine workshop" anyone have any thoughts? Can I drive to said workshop?

POST 2Original post

I'm going to take it to the premier shop in my area and after it's fixed it's for sale, I don't care if it's just a sensor I'm tired of this with German cars. PS AOS just changed so if anyone knows whether O2 sensors don't throw codes I'm listening, maybe one got fouled.

POST 3Original post

😳🤣 Could be nothing Could be something My Ford's can throw alerts too.

POST 4Original post

I kinda knew that, snake. Whatever it is after it's fixed I'm dead serious it's outa my garage I've been thinking about it anyhow. It's running too well to be something messed up, it felt fine sounded fine, didn't overheat, it seems fine. It threw the code before I got out of the subdivision.

POST 6Original post

Yes, I read the manual it indicates that increased pollution will trigger the light, cats didn't mention the O2 sensors, mentioned the fuel cap. So I go out there and the fuel cap is so loose it was like I never tightened it but after tightening it throws the same code, It sounds, starts and runs perfect so I'm inclined to drive the 16 miles to the shop next week with my fingers crossed unless said shop says differently. The loose cap is weird because I always tighten that and it's been checked at the pipe sniff every year. Master mechanic said anything that would cause a running issue or emissions issue would throw a code. He said don't worry about it but you all know I am anyway The bad boys Porsche experts shop can't look till June they're all on the west coast so I guess it will be in the garage. After it's looked after I'm still selling it.

POST 7Original post

So the the”visit the engine guy” in terms means a check engine light? O2’s can do this sort of thing… loose gas cap as well. Did you disconnect the battery after the cap was tightened?? try that?

POST 8Original post

code 0455 tank limit leak upper limit valve exceeded. Anyone know what this is or whether it could be AOS related. This is going to sound stupid but the new AOS had a half moon chip out of the outlet where the pipe connects. It was tiny and at the tip so I put in in anyway. Since it can't be looked at anytime soon I guess I'll take my own advise disassemble a lot of stuff and have a look. I should send it back to FCP euro either way to make sure. I don't know I'm clutching at straws here unless someone knows the code. Did not do the battery disconnect in case they needed to see data. Going to try to clear 0455 code disconnect the battery and see what happens.

POST 10Original post

OK So battery disconnected, code cleared, cap tightened all good except drive off warning and PSM failure I'm going around the block I will check back

POST 11Original post

OK so it's perfect now, thanks to all, no codes running great, still might sell it in a month or so if anyone has a hankering PM me.

POST 12Original post

That PSM is an automatic warning… you should be good yes selling: be sure! All cars are junk ya know 🤣 aaaaaaaand!! Your welcome…. I kinda already knew what it was

POST 13Original post

Two broken teeth for another month and a messed up spine every day, my apologies to all for being psycho. It's hot at noon and cold at night, that must have been what loosened the gas cap and started the entire dealio. If the government had minded their own $%&ing business then a little loosey gas cap wouldn't trigger me, an idiot light or end up as a ground ball charge at a repair shop. AND I was going to flat bed it? Oooofa today was awful but it ended well. Thanks Durametric, worth every penny, stopped my Nam like flashbacks to the dead 986 engine

POST 14Original post

If you bent over for a new motor the ledge does exi$t…. Next time, just breathe. What year is that car??

POST 15Original post

2011, hey it threw a code for "back window heater failure" and my favorite: failed overhead door programming attempt, geez I did get that working what a nag! As for the rear window heater: whatchu talkin bout Willis

POST 16Original post

Next time, just breathe. 08 that's normally my go to, especially for wrenching. But the last two weeks? New dentist, almost arrived, we have to cancel the doctor is sick. OK Go to first appointment? Dead roach in the room, ancient equipment. Decide to let this guy fix it anyhow because of all the accolades of my friends in town. In route this week to repair, finally: Doctor has to cancel he has a migraine. A migraine or a cocaine problem at night? No matter start over this week, that radiograph from a week ago is no good we need to take one, of course you do. Then repair date? Mid June, hey beautiful oatmeal all the time is awesome. So I was already amped, throw in the "LS Spine is completely ruined" whipped topping? That warning light was like that old shopper game " the straw that breaks the camel's back". HAHA, I'm human I lost it today, my apologies to everyone.

POST 17Original post

**** happens… last summer “somehow” While installing a front lip cut the window washer fluid line… why do they run that so far up front unnecessarily? F’k if I know… better than coolant I suppose… bad day? That’s what a shot of JD is for…. Wish I drank…

POST 18Original post

I don't drink much either. When you're young and someone is always crotchety it never occurs to you they might be in chronic pain, once it happens to you then you understand and fight the best you can to not be a Richard because your back won't ever relent. I'm going to look into some shot this summer, maybe before my Spyder trip.

POST 19Original post

Hang in there, @Boristhespyder !!!! Sometimes life just piles up. I’m admittedly going through some of the most trying times in my life right now but I have to believe that things get better. Take a month and see how you feel about your Spyder in June. Meanwhile, I really hope things get better for you and enjoy the ride!!!

POST 20Original post

Keep the car!! Remember, you won’t be able to buy what you have as easy with the changes and $upply/demand… 2023 there all EV.. you have the last of the best… besides, what would you get?

POST 22Original post

Nothing…. ? I see, so if you sold it, it would be because of your spine not the service engine lights…. Got it!!

POST 23Original post

the best cure is always a nice long drive on your favourite road.....after any issues have been fixed of course!

POST 24Original post

Just got back, it's still the best car I've ever owned, period. The only reason the "visit engine shop" light freaked me out was that I had a 986 go early and didn't know that said light encompasses many codes, my mind went right to catastrophic failure but it's running like it always has, PERFECT. Lesson learned and shared, read the codes ! Freaking out is always a later option, of course as you have read there was a lot of factors, thanks to everyone.

POST 25Original post

Boris, if it actually was caused by a loose gas cap, those codes (as with most emission and safety related ones) don't clear when the fault is corrected. They must be reset with a OBD tool like Durametric or PIWIS. I think you stated that you cleared it once and it came back. I'm assuming that was before you discovered and corrected the loose cap.

POST 26Original post

I think he did that… I agree with what you say, but he was able to clear the P0544

POST 27Original post

I used my Durametric, it has not thrown any additional codes except the comic one I noted about "overhead door program fail". It works fine now and the car is 100% The cap wasn't a little loose either, I was a bit surprised about the heat cold cycles doing that, I've checked it since and it's fine, staying tight.

POST 28Original post

FWIW - Yeah, "visit workshop" messages on my somewhat new-to-me 252K mile 987.2 were initially scaring me. Armed with a PIWIS2, I'm a bit more relaxed now. First bunch of error messages were when I bought the car, which I had a I feeling I could sort out. The PIWIS quickly took care of those, as they were both electrical in nature and expected. Plus, the TMPS batteries were dead so I disconnected the system and coded the system out for now. Meanwhile, the car threw a code last month and I quickly researched it -- and was the MAF sensor that needed cleaning. No replacement necessary (AFAIK so far) or even removal from the engine bay. Cleaned the sensor really well, reset the code, and finally drove the car pretty hard the other day for 2+ hours on the highway. No issues, no codes. Love it. @Boristhespyder - Cheering you on per your spine. Chronic pain is NOT fun. Meanwhile, hope you can still enjoy it if you can -- and sell it if you're not enjoying it. Just take your time with your decision -- a Spyder might not be easy to replace from what I can tell and yours seems pretty epic. Cheers.

POST 29Original post

If it's throwing "visit engine shop" codes for dead TPMS batteries that just seems wrong to me. Great marketing though, you're thinking I bet it needs all new chain tensioners or something worse and they happily announce "ta da" just new TPMS * at slightly higher prices than a standard tire shop * and we happily throw money at them like we're at Bada Bing in the sopranos, because hey that's really cheap compared to my internal dialogue, it's flawless!

POST 30Original post

Sorry to not clarify! The "visit workshop" error message wasn't for the TPMS - I just disabled the system as it was separately complaining about the inability to read the tire pressures via the TPMS (long since dead).

POST 31Original post

Foodbiker, care to share how to disconnect and turn off the TMPS system. One of the most idiotic congress initiated laws ever. Shared of course with Porsche's no dipstick engineering., Thanks, Art

POST 32Original post

The O-ring on the gas cap can crack and wear over the years. The fix might be as simple as replacing your gas cap, it's $16 on Pelican Parts. My car threw a P0456 code over it, but I think if the leak is small enough it might not even throw a code. Hope you decide to hang on to her.
