I've had a recurring problem with my '
06 Cayman S
, the driver's side shift cable comes loose from the transaxle shift mechanism. It did it several weeks ago, and I called my dealer about it, but after two days awaiting
Porsche
's return call, they said I'd have to bring it in for them to look at before
Porsche
would agree to fix it under the extended warranty. It happened twice today, and I called the dealer to tell him to go ahead and order the cable, I'll need it whether
Porsche
pays for it or I do.
My dealer is 75 miles away, thus my delay in taking the car in. Every time it has come loose the car is stuck in 1st gear, which leads me to believe there is something about the geometry of the shifting that makes it pop off when I put the car in first.
Has anyone else experienced this phenomenom?

Yes. I recall at least one other owner on this forum experiencing the same thing. Hopefully they'll chime in shortly.
Funny thing.....just had A shift cable "issue" with my 08 C2S last week.
arggggh.
I've had exactly the same problem with my 06 CS over the last couple of weeks. Cable kept "popping off" at gearbox side at the rear.
mine came off twice leaving me stuck in 2nd gear and the third time in netrual which wasn't good as I was in rush hour traffic and had to abandon the car in the middle of the road with the hazard lights on and wait to be rescued!
Seems it is a little ball and socket joint at the gearbox. The socket gets worn on the end of the cable and comes off. As I was taking the car away for a holiday last week the garage drilled a hole in the socket and it is held on at present with two lock nuts. Just driven 1,000 miles and it has held up OK.
Only cure is new cables which hopefully I will have fitted shortly. Good luck with yours !
I had this happen to my 06 CS which was under warranty at the time. They flat bedded it to the dealership and covered it under warranty.
The last time mine came off was at the barber shop, and I laid out a plastic sheet I keep in the car and crawled underneath to pop it back on. It only takes a few seconds to put it back once you get in a position to do it, but its aggrivating to say the least. I had my dealer order one, and I'm to go in
next
week to have it replaced.
Porsche
hasn't decided yet if they will cover it under the extended warranty, and if they don't I plan to install it myself. The dealer told me they would keep the car two days to do the job, and I cannot see where it would take anywhere near that long.
My problem manifested at the track! Lime Rock last year. So I just went around without shifting to salvage my event. Problem was at high RPMs the gear would pop out from third gear to neutral as I accelerated out of turns (e.g. Big Bend) which was scary as cars would be up my rear not knowing I couldn't move. Brought back to dealer and they said transmission cables get loose from time to time. You should ask your dealer to fix as well despite being off warranty as this is a quality issue and no parts needed but it does take a lot of work. Good luck.
I think you guys should file a report with NHTSA. In my opinion, this is a safety issue if you can't change gears.
I am having the same problem with my '07 S, and am wondering if anyone has tried to tighten up the slop in the cable-end socket. I'm thinking of cutting a small square of poly film (think visqueen) and putting it on the ball before popping the connecter back on to see if it will make up for the worn connector?
