Suggestion
Others can give you advice on maintenance, but I would budget for replacing any seals in a 20+ year old car.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Oh yea... The title says it all! The P.O. owned my 2001 996 c2 (hardtop) for 11 years. He NEVER opened it, but he did use the tilt function... I have owned it for a few months and its time to try.
I have used the tilt function a few times and once I accidentally closed it "too far" and it actually opened / slid backwards to open a few inches. I did not want to push it, but it appears to be in good working order.
Do you all have any advice for me as I attempt to fully open it for the first time? Other than greasing moving parts, and slowly working it further and further open (back and forth); what are some things I should look out for?
I have hunted for similar situations as mine, online, but all I could find was a million "sunroof electronics are faulty" post and like 2 or 3 "sunroof broke open / wont open" post...
Any advice will do! I am feelin' lucky today
Don't do it on a rainy day and have a dry place to store the car until repaired.
I believe there will be drain holes that should be cleaned out, too. Others can give you advice on maintenance, but I would budget for replacing any seals in a 20+ year old car.
My 99 sat for aprox 2 years after the previous owner blew the engine . I purchased and rebuilt the engine . My sunroof would tilt but not open . As stated above I assisted the opening with one hand while holding the button . Had to break the friction on the seal from being closed so long . After fully opening I cleaned/vacuumed the tracks and lubed with Super Lube silicone grease . Been working fine for over a year now .
Great advice here. If anyone has any thoughts on why my headliner pops off of the retainers, mostly the rear, when I open mine I would appreciate it. I can fix it pretty easily buts it odd that it started doing it in the first place.
OK! I had success opening it! Silicone grease in all the locations, drains were clear too...
Then it came time to close it! It closed normally with the button held down, but it did this odd thing with the one touch button:
When opening with the one touch buttons, opens. When
closing
with the one touch button, it seems slightly burdened and then it stops @ 1/3 of the way closing... I then have to press the button again and it "overcomes" whatever triggered it and closes....
Having it open was cool and all, but for now, I think I can go without it!!
Thanks for the advice everyone... Mission accomplished
