Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1Original post

I am having the typical problem of the shift cable coming off the ball on the driver side of the transmission with my '07 S, and am wondering if anyone has tried to tighten up the slop in the cable-end socket. I'm thinking of cutting a small square of poly film (think visqueen) and putting it on the ball before popping the connecter back on to see if it will make up for the worn connector? Any thoughts or perhaps some ideas that have worked for others? I know the correct solution is to replace the cables with perhaps the better Numeric cables , but I'm looking for a short term fix. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Buy the Function First kit to alleviate the problem if it’s not too late already

POST 3Original post

You don't want that ball to come out of its socket on some back country road at night. It will be stuck in that gear until you can jack up your car and slide under. Hard to do on the road side. I was never that clever to pull one roadside repairs off. Usually a flat bed tow truck did the trick. I would just bite the bullet and order the Steel Numeric shifter cables. I replaced mine 30k ago along with their short shifter. That setup is just great. I'm a big believer in engine braking and this system really makes it easy. Seems the M97 engine likes an oil bath during the downshifts. I'm to the point now where I downshift more than use the brakes. The Wavetrac LSD also helps keep the rear end planted both in acceleration and engine braking/threshold braking.
