It seems oddly specific in timing for the rotor warp, especially after a shop with that reputation just checked the rotors for wear.
Leading evidence: 'Check rotors' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rotors got really hot just' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check play in your tie rods/wheel bearings' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use laquer thinner to clean brake residue off my motorcycle discs when they start exhibiting uneven friction as the wheel rotates.

I've only used OEM brake parts, do AutoX and HPDE's but never had any rotor warp issues.

Suspected cause
If there's no reason to suspect the rotors got really hot just before this started, it still might be worth cleaning them and perhaps checking for runout if you have a dial indicator.

Presumably you've also checked for play in your tie rods/wheel bearings?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is almost certainly a dumb question, but here goes.
So, I picked up a 2007 S a few months ago, a little under 63,000 miles. I brought it to Gold Crest, a well known P-car tuner here in Atlanta to be checked out after purchase, and they said it's in really nice condition. Outer tie rod bushings are getting a little bit loose, and the front discs have some grooves. That's all they found.
So, anyway, a few weeks ago, I took each of the wheels off to clean the insides, because they're
Carrera
Classic 19s. After that I parked the car. Today I took the car for a ride and when I tap the brakes at almost any speed, there's a noticeable vibration. You can even see it in the steering wheel. My wife noticed it from the passenger seat.
I've been taking wheels on and off of cars for 40 years, but never on a Porsche. I did use hanger rods and I did torque the bolts to 110 or 120 (I don't recall exactly) and of course alternating diagonally.
Is there some magical incantation that has to be spoken in Middle High German when putting these wheels back on?
I agree with platinum although if the onset was directly related to the wheel removal it couldn't hurt to recheck them. It seems oddly specific in timing for the rotor warp, especially after a shop with that reputation just checked the rotors for wear. If you feel rhythmic pulsing during braking the rotors are highly suspect. If the pulsing tracks with the vehicle speed as it slows that is also a clue.
Sorry too hear. Sounds like this only happens on a tap of the brakes? How about when really stopping quick? Did you recheck the torque after 50 miles or so?
Please update progress.
Eyes up, Look ahead😁
Just to be sure, this problem began after the wheels were removed and did not exist before?
If so, I'd start with getting the front wheels off the ground and observing that they spin free and true. If there's no reason to suspect the rotors got really hot just before this started, it still might be worth cleaning them and perhaps checking for runout if you have a dial indicator. I use laquer thinner to clean brake residue off my motorcycle discs when they start exhibiting uneven friction as the wheel rotates.
Interesting little mystery. Hoping for a quick and simple fix.
Ok, reporting back. I put about 80 miles on it today, mixed it up, got up to 90 on the highway. The vibration isn't really noticeable until about 45-50, so it's definitely related to wheel speed, no surprise there. As far as brake pressure, the lighter the touch, the more pronounced the vibration. Firmer pressure, less vibration.
I'm going to order Sebro and
Akebono
from FCP and install them when I have a free weekend.
What do people think of FCP in general, and Sebro and
Akebono
? I doubt that I'll be doing track days with the
Cayman
. That's what my Triumph Daytona is for
Also, I'm tempted to get solid rotors, because these dust grooves suck. What do people think about the low-dust Akebonos? I'll admit up front that I want the drilled rotors simply because they look cool.
FCP Euro 👍👍
I've only used OEM brake parts, do AutoX and HPDE's but never had any rotor warp issues. I drive really hard at these events.
I've had 3 front end vibration issues:
1. Impact damage front right. Hit a huge hole driving at night in a construction zone. Was so violent. Stopped, could find nothing. Continued 600+ miles on road trip. About a month later did an HPDE. Second session felt a strange vibration, front right! Completely forgot about hitting the hole, got out could move tire in and out on top 5/8" +! Long story, long, had slightly bent rim, very bent control arm, bent tie rod and broken strut!
2. Indy shop really half assed an alignment. LCA front left bolt loose at frame! Did not indicate until pushing hard through a right corner.
3. First time using a different shop.. Extremely poor job mounting and balancing new
tires
. They got it wrong every possible way. Even after talking to them about the yellow dots on performance
tires
, could not get it right. Weights on all wheels were wrong. After fixing a leaking valve stem mounted tire BACKWARDS! Went to different shop to get it right.
Just saying!
Eyes up, Look ahead 😁
FCP Euro - they are hard to beat. They actually care for the customer. I've been a customer for years now, and this week received a survey from the owner checking to see what they're doing right (which reveals what they might not be doing right.) They are customer-centric, and it shows.
