Suggestion

Being a turbo, if it's failed, more than likely it would be from the previous owner running more boost etc but not tuning for it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all Having bought a 53plate 996 tt tiptronic i require a new engine for it as the old one has seized! Will get it properly inspected but am thinking of worst case scenario atm. I used to browse through this site and it was a very helpful source of information for me.. can anyone help me with regard to finding an engine or know anyone who may be selling one? what kind of price am i looking to pay for it? can a manual engine fit into the tiptronic( thinking that the flywheel may be different only) or are they different in other ways too? any help much appreciated thanks

POST 2Original post

Have'nt heard of too many TT engines having terminal problems.... is your car still under warantee ?

POST 3Original post

Worth talking to Autofarm although surprising that it's failed the tt engines are built on strong stock. Is it mapped?? http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines Good luck

POST 4Original post

be very suprised if its totally seized if its completely kaput though I hope you have a large bank balance

POST 5Original post

Engine seizures are not normally terminal unless yours has, "a leg-out-of- bed"? [Rod through the side of the crankcase]. I think rebuilding will be cheaper unless you can find one from a specialist breaker, think a couple of guys in Holland break a lot of late model accident damaged ones.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

just out of curiosity ive been offered a 51 plate 996tt with 40k for £39k..has all options inc pcm etc is a manual; with opc warranty and full psh.. a good buy? cant see it depreciating much..after a year would you think it still be worth £33k?

POST 7Original post

So have you actually bought the seized engined car or are you just thinking what it would be worth after a rebuild. I agree with a previous post. Unless the worst was found you'd never buy a new engine, just rebuild it. Being a turbo, if it's failed, more than likely it would be from the previous owner running more boost etc but not tuning for it. So likely failures would be piston with a hole in it (normally at the first ring land) but would not normally seize it. It could have been pinging that bad that it's welded a bearing to the crank. Again though, that wouldn't seize it, just cause a lovely knocking as the piston hits the roof of the combustion chamber with the slack from the bearing. To be honest, if it is seized it could be really nasty..... oil feed failure causing catastrophic failure - killing multiple components. If it has seized from oil supply failure forget it. Crank will be unserviceable etc.....all bearing surfaces would be scored, it would be overheated and out of tolerance for runout etc. You'd need new pistons, cams, valvetrain.... list would go on....

POST 8Original post

I shall shortly be selling a 51 plate 996tt with 48k miles, FMDSH, just serviced (literally - still at the dealer!), brand new clutch and OPC warranty till October. Has the X50 pack and aerokit on it as well as PCM etc. and I will be looking for about £43k, so £39k for a normal TT with slightly less miles is probably about right....but my clutch needed doing at 48k miles ... Parts alone are £900, fitting would be another £700 - £1k ish depending on where you get it done I would imagine.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi thanks for the replies..i managed to sell the car with the engine issue as didn't want any headache..cut my losses and lesson learnt now am on the lookout for a 996 tt..have seen a few without warranty but have heard that you can go to any porsche dealer and have them inspect it and they will warranty it for £900?? i believe all the services have to be done on time etc but i am sure the dealer would check that.. also is 52k on an 02 plate a liitle high mileage? its on for 39k also

POST 10Original post

pops To keep yourself right, let the seller arrange the OPC inspection and warranty as pre-condition to sale - do not leave it as your risk with potential 'surprises' discovered during the inspection. You are in a buyer's market at the moment. Peter

POST 11Original post

pops, to get a warranty you have to pay for the inspection and then have everything they find fixed before they charge you 895 quid for it! Warranty is definitely worth it, my car is having 3,500 quids worth done on the warranty at the moment. If you are going for a higher mileage I would check on the clutch, as I said, mine needed doing at 48k miles, is 1500 ish to get it done at a specialist!!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi elrao thanks for your information would love to see pics of your car but unfortunately my budget only allows me to stretch to £39k at the most! gd luck with your sale however

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi if anyone knows of a manual 996tt in black or silver with aero kit for sale please let me know.. ideally must be at least 51/02 plate with less than 50k and fpsh with opc warranty.. my budget is £39k and will wait for the right car at the right price.. thanks

POST 15Original post

52k on an 02 is around 8600 miles a year, which is not a lot. At £39k, worth a look I'd say. My 02 4S has done 53k (admittedly 25k of that in the past year in my care) and it feels spot on. As ever, condition is everything.
