Suspected cause

In my experience, when the top (or clamshell) stops at an odd position but everything else seems to be working properly, it is probably a microswitch issue.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought a 996 with a known convertible top issue. Seller said the ram need to replace not a big deal. He was right it was leaking. Did not fix the issue. Turns out the pump was bad. Got the Rams working good. Top would only halfway open to Service position. brought it to dealer spent $3000, They didn’t do a single thing to it suggested just throwing parts at it. At this point have changed every single part on the mechanisms of the top, including top latch, module, etc. Trying to figure this thing out, if I took the potentiometer off the ram push the top open button and slowly turn the potentiometer by hand, I can make it open and close. Dealer couldn’t Calibrate the top, my Durametric says it cannot communicate with the module to calibrate the top and it ends up timing out. What the heck is going on?

POST 2Original post

Oh boy, I don't envy your situation. It's post like these that make me nervous about having a Cab as well. I hope someone with more knowledge than me can help you out. If my top starts acting this way I am going to see if I can mod it to work manually, like our '93 Miata...

POST 3Original post

Sorry for your trouble, but taking it to a dealer is a big mistake. They're used to working on new cars under warranty, not old ones like ours. Find a good independent Porsche specialist in your area.

POST 4Original post

For convertible top issues, you could also find a good upholstery shop that also specializes in tops. Some of them are good at dealing with the mechanical issues that arises.

POST 5Original post

You may want to check out this thread. Not specific to your fix, but it provides a bunch of random info if you care to read through it & make sense of it. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...more-pics.html I recently had my right clamshell get stuck closed. I was able to get it open & through (LOTS) of trial & error I got my clamshell working, convertible working & fully calibrated by myself. It does take a pretty mechanical mind to understand the system. The clamshell is mechanically operated, the top is hydraulically operated. They both work together with a series of microswitches. In my experience, when the top (or clamshell) stops at an odd position but everything else seems to be working properly, it is probably a microswitch issue. PM me with any questions, I also may have a convertible top calibration pdf also. My thoughts... Check the operation of the clamshell, the interior flaps, the hydraulic top and the latch at the front/center of the top. They all work in a specific order. If one is out of place, the top will stop in an odd position.

POST 6Original post

A good place to start would be to recheck the clamshell potetiometer 6.2k ohms with clamshell fully open .

POST 7Original post

Im going to be the least helpful guy here. I would buy a hardtop and stop dealing with that nonsense! Haha Good luck with it though, seriously. Im curious what the eventual fix is.

POST 8Original post

The side flaps are a big issue with tops that spot halfway..... The side flaps have little drive motors and micro-switches that signal whether they are are fully open or fully closed....If they are not in the fully expected position ( according to the micro-switches), it will stop the top function so as to not destroy the flaps It's always worth checking them very closely when you have this issue.......
