Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

ALWAYS Mobil 1, 0W40, changed every 3K miles or so.
Leading evidence: 'Replace every 3k miles or so' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (3 weeks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
A: had a magnetic drain plug, no metal shavings detected in the prior oil change (3 weeks before the failure).
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Two simple ways to reduce or eliminate both issues: Proactively replace the IMS, run better quality (read high ZDDP and film strength) oils, change them frequently (less than 5K miles).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd like to conduct a survey of 1996-2008 Porsche owners in order to get an idea of what kinds of preventative maintenance have the most value/effect. Whether your car is healthy or if you've experienced an IMS failure or bore/cylinder scoring issue, please share. I will post this survey in a number of forums and compile the information in order to get some conclusive data on what works instead of just relying on circumstantial evidence:
1) The year, mileage, and model of your Porsche the last time you drove it (i.e., at the time of failure, if it experienced one)
2) Did your car experience either an IMS or cylinder-scoring-related engine failure?
2a) Did the failure occur on a racetrack?
2b) What was the nature of the failure?
3) What oil is/was used in the car?
4) Did/does the car have a LN engineering spin-on oil filter, or the stock oil filter?
4a) If the filter was a spin-on, did/does the car also have the extra magnetic strip installed?
5) Did/does the car have a magnetic oil drain plug?
6) Did/does the car have a 3rd radiator installed?
7) Did/does the car have a low-temp thermometer installed?
Two simple ways to reduce or eliminate both issues: Proactively replace the IMS, run better quality (read high ZDDP and film strength) oils, change them frequently (less than 5K miles).
If you want to improve the car's odds, use a spin on filter, with a FilterMag and magnetic drain plug, run a 160F stat.
1) The year, mileage, and model : 2002; 175,000; 996 Targa
2) Did your car experience either an IMS or cylinder-scoring-related engine failure? NO; UNKNOWN IF SCORING. TICKING SOUND VARIABLY HEARD; WAS TOLD BY 2 PORSCHE INDIES THAT IT WAS LIFTER. SEEMED TO COME AND GO.
2a) Did the failure occur on a racetrack? N/A
2b) What was the nature of the failure? N/A
3) What oil is/was used in the car? ALWAYS Mobil 1, 0W40, changed every 3K miles or so.
4) Did/does the car have a LN engineering spin-on oil filter, or the stock oil filter? STOCK FILTER
4a) If the filter was a spin-on, did/does the car also have the extra magnetic strip installed? N/A - STOCK FILTER; NO MAGNETIC STRIP
5) Did/does the car have a magnetic oil drain plug? YES
6) Did/does the car have a 3rd radiator installed? YES - FROM FACTORY
7) Did/does the car have a low-temp thermometer installed? UNKNOWN - IF THIS WAS A FACTORY OPTION, I DON'T KNOW. IF THIS WAS SOMETHING INSTALLED AFTERMARKET, THEN NO.
