I have a 2000 996.1 C4 Cab with 6-speed Manual. 77k miles. I decided to use my Durametric to read the camshaft deviation. With a warm engine my readings were Bank 1: -9.54; Bank 2: -4.13. The.readings were stable from idle up to about 3,000 rpm. I understand that the values should less than 6. Does mean that I need to replace the variocam chain guides on Bank 1? Would I need to replace anything else? I was planing on doing the IMS and clutch in the next few months so I guess I�ll doing some additional work as well.

Just got this email from PCA about their new video series on youtube with Jake Raby and LN Engineering. Yes they address chain guides. This should answer all your questions and more.

Yes the factory tolerance is +/- 6. Your bank 1 cam dev is out of spec and this is the usual pattern with bank 1 going first. You should plan to replace pads on both sides soon along with the short cam chains. Job can be done engine in but it is very challenging and it�s highly advisable to do the job engine out. Great opportunity to tackle your IMS, RMS, AOS at same time and to also put in new chain tensioners. Some owners advise rebuilding the variocam actuators or installing new ones ($$$) and putting new solenoids in. Use search and read up on the topic. (I skipped it but I DIYd the job so I can go back in at a future date if needed.) Choose a reputable P car shop or if you want and are able to tackle it yourself, loads of help is available for the tricky parts.
