It's common to use 7mm front and 15mm rear spacers to get a more modern look.

In terms of your question, you should be able to swap your wheels for 17" or 18" wheels without getting new lug bolts or using spacers, since 17" wheels were standard on 996s.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am downsizing from my 19" to a set of 17" turbo twist wheels on my 2000 996. Before I do this I wanted to ask if I need to buy new lug nuts, spacers or anything else to make the swap?
The 19" wheels came with the car, they look good but I want to drive the car as it was originally spec'd out to be so I bought a used set of turbo twists, and I'm told it will be a softer and better ride.
Can I just put the 17"s on or are there hoops I need to jump through?
Thanks!
19" wheels....I want to try 17"s for a different ride.
If the wheels are factory sizes and offsets just bolt them on. I think you might have considered 18s which were the factory option size they give a great ride.
Enjoy

'Great' ride? That's pretty generous; but most owners are younger than me. I probably thought that when mine was new. Even so...if a great ride is Lexus, my '01 996 with 18" wheels is a 4 at best.
You might want to consider 18" wheels. I ordered my car with the standard 17" Turbo Twist wheels and later switched to 18" hollow-spoke Porsche OEM Sport Techno wheels. The 18" wheels stick out a bit more and therefore look much wider than the 17" wheels. The 996 never had 19" wheels as a factory oprtion and there are therefore no OEM 19" wheels for them. In terms of your question, you should be able to swap your wheels for 17" or 18" wheels without getting new lug bolts or using spacers, since 17" wheels were standard on 996s. I have H&R spacers (I don't remember what size) on the front of my car, and I had them when I had 17" wheels also. I got longer lug bolts for the fronts because of that. You might want to get spacers because the front wheel (especially if you have 17" wheels) don't stick out far enough. BTW, I couldn't detect any difference in ride between 17" and 18" wheels.
If you want a soft ride, you may want to consider the 8x18 10x18 and put on a set of Conti or Michelin all season 235x40x18 in the front and 285x35x18 in the rear. Very cushy ride due to all of the extra rubber and larger diameter.
PM me if you are near or plan on swinging thru the suburbs of Chicago. You can test my different sets of 18 inch wheels to see the difference in feel with different rubber. My other set of wheels are 225x40x18 and 285x30x18 Bridgestone RE71RS which are stiff as hell but very responsive.
Night and day difference. It's amazing how different tire sizes completely alter the driving experience.
That's right

The base 17" wheels that were sold on the 996 were called 'carrera 2'. They are nearly identical to the various 18" turbo twists so there's often confusion.

The base wheels are the 7x and 9x wide, both with +55mm offsets. The 8.5x17 are winter options for the rear.

The 19's fill the wheel well so much better then the 18's. To each his own but I did just the opposite and went up to 19's on mine and love the look. I did 997 5 spoke wheels.
Yep, there is a lid for every pot.
Comes down to individual preference for the look, feel and handling characteristics any 996 owner wants. You only live once. Better off doing it in a 996 with the wheels you want. You can always sell them if you want to change it.
I went from 18" Carrera to 17" 996 Carrera 2 painted black. Nice ride and doesn't look bad on stock springs. Tires are much cheaper too. Still have my 18s which I'll eventually put some nice summer tires on.
