Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have a Mercedes S500 and an SL500 both with tiptronic as standard (Porsche used the elements of this design for their auto trans), and it certainly beats the driving of my last Aston a 1985 V8 Vantage.
Leading evidence: 'Use elements of this design' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'carrera 4s is the one' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Test drives will help' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I think if you are still minded to 4WD with all of its benefits for the fast driving safety factor, then probably the Carrera 4S is the one to look at.

Suggestion
If you will need to use the car for an element of daily commuting then I would as I'm now a boring old fart :sleepy: I would go Tiptronic.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Gary. Brief outline - Pre face lift; 3.4 engine, available in 2 & 4WD, coupe & cab plus Turbo, GT2 & GT3 (although the Turbo & GT2 look like the face lifted version) Face Lifted; 3.6 engine, available in 2 & 4WD, coupe & cab plus Turbo, GT2 & GT3 and the 4S which is a wide bodied, normally aspirated engine. Targa also available in the facelift which has a full length glass sliding roof.
GT2 was a hardcore version of the turbo with 2 WD and no driver aids (so not many straight ones left) Also 462 Hp pre- facelift and 483 Hp post facelift.
GT3 and the 2004 GT3 RS more of a track focused car but still road useable.
There is also the 2004 (I think) Turbo S which is quite a desireable car.
Turbo, 4S and GT2 have fatter arses.
And a Milleniuim special edition that had all the toys as standard.
i think decisions that need to be made are if you want
2wd/ 4wd.
NA/Turbo engine.
will it be for predominantly road use or track use.
prefer the look of narrow body/wide body.
a few test drives will help.
good luck in your search, all are great cars.

Hi
I'm a new boy to Porsche but an "old boy" (and in years too! :thumb
to Astons  .
I think the key to your decision on a 996 is 2WD or 4WD. I would also suggest with the exception of the Turbo version that you go for the circa 2003 Facelift models with the 3596 cc Engine. The interior trim quality improved too with the facelift. (Note early Turbos will still present the trim issue).
If you want performance and you are happy with 4WD (Standard on Turbo) the Turbo (420bhp) is the one to go for (2001-2005) or even better the 2004+ Turbo S with 450bhp and Ceramic Brakes as standard.
On the non Turbo versions the 4WD efficiency absorption effect takes a bit out of the standard 320bhp 3.6 Facelift Models performance and obviously impacts fuel consumption. (not to be sneezed at now with Super Unleaeded Prices from 107p++ per litre :nooo: )
I think if you are still minded to 4WD with all of its benefits for the fast driving safety factor, then probably the Carrera 4S is the one to look at.
I went for the Carrera 2 post facelift model for the power and economy factor, but mainly I suppose because I found a low mileage car, competitively priced, with an aero kit, sideskirts, and in the colour I wanted "Speed Yellow" A year ago too when I bought the Turbo 996 was fetching higher prices than it is today.
Sun roofs are available, but watch it if you are tall, the roof retraction area takes out cabin height. By the way that is why I never looked at a DB7 because the standard roof line was just too low.
Tiptronic (5spd) vs Manual (6spd) well this exercises Forum Members views  . If you will need to use the car for an element of daily commuting then I would as I'm now a boring old fart :sleepy: I would go Tiptronic. I have a Mercedes S500 and an SL500 both with tiptronic as standard (Porsche used the elements of this design for their auto trans), and it certainly beats the driving of my last Aston a 1985 V8 Vantage. I had a left leg like "popeye" and a girlie right leg!
My Porsche has manual and it is very useable, but I dont crawl around town in it, and dont like stop starting in traffic with it because I keep thinking about the clutch wearing away
So at the end of Big Bob's equivalent to "War and Peace " please now wake up :sleepy: and figure out whats best for you.
Best advice too is buy the best car you can with the money you have :food:
Regards Big Bob
