You could check the connectors to the speed sensors, as they often corrode.

Does anyone have a sort of check schedule that i can undertake to see if this is something simple to correct or is this a job for the specialists.

Suggestion

You could also try changing the brake pedal switch, which is about £12, as they can also be problematic, but without a diagnostic check you are shooting in the dark really.
