It's the only way I can describe it. When I turn the wheel it creaks, as if it is rubbing against something. I've tried adjusting the steering column, but to no avail. Is it simply a case of blasting a bit of WD40 about, or is there a 'proper' cure?! AndyB

Could it be the steering column trim catching on the back of the steering wheel? Anyone removed the wheel recently, perhaps to change the stalk unit? I do know that if the stalk unit isn't clamped on to the column if the right place, it can cause a creak like you describe. I think you need to find the cause, rather than mask the noise with WD40.
