OMG - I don't believe it but it happenned again and so I went back to an indpendant porsche specialist who said it's one of two things - a) the OPC put too much oil in at the outset, he thinks this is likely as when he checked the oil level it was still on max despite it clearly being burnt off oil.

However, I noticed a big cloud of blue smoke puff out the back of the car the other day - didn't seem to make any difference to the performance of the car or anything but I suspect the bloke behind me was as alarmed as I was.

Some recommend redex type treatments to clear out the engine but not sure if this is appropriate on a 911.

Getting really hacked off with this now - Car's just come back from the garage, they had it for a week and having eliminated the OPC overfillig the oil possibility they decided to change the Oil Seperator, mainly because "that was all it could be".

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi - I've just bought a 2001 996 with 28k miles on it. Its a lovely car! However, I noticed a big cloud of blue smoke puff out the back of the car the other day - didn't seem to make any difference to the performance of the car or anything but I suspect the bloke behind me was as alarmed as I was. I know its common upon start up but has anyone experienced this before?

POST 2Original post

Had similar experience on a high mileager - was told it was worn valve guides - cant believe that is your problem at such a low mileage! Maybe it needs a good run to "clear its tubes". Some recommend redex type treatments to clear out the engine but not sure if this is appropriate on a 911. Is the engine noisy at all?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

no sounds just like i expect it to - it's a great noise! Many forums say that blue smoke is typical on start up and nothing to worry about but i got a big puff of smoke whilst out driving - only once mind you so maybe it's one of those things that'll be ok and I'm just over reacting. It's booked in for a service at a main dealer next week so I'll wait and see. It has however had a "good run" before this event so it's nothing to do with that! Thanks for your reply mate!

POST 4Original post

Haran (F1 Dragon) who posts on here had a similar prob with his C4S when accelerating around a bend... can't remember what the issue was, but it was easily sorted (but under warranty!)

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now that's an interesting point because thats what I was doing - accelerating round a corner - then big puff of blue smoke. Thanks very much for that comment. I must try and find the member you mentioned to see what the problem was and I hope my used car warranty will pay for it!

POST 6Original post

Hi, mine used to smoke occasionally on startup. But last time it was in for a service - the OPC said the oil seperator was cracked/or leaking (can't remember which because it was fixed under warranty) - but anyway I don't get smoke on start up anymore. So I guess what I am saying is it could be a faulty oil seperator? That said I understand the flat six can smoke occasionally on start up if left for a while. Smoke while driving should be investigated I would think. Cheers

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks mate - I agree with you - needs investigating me thinks!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well - its back from jct600 OPC, had its check up and all fine - no fault found. There is apparently a chance that it just needed a bit of a blow out following it's stint in the showroom! Anyway, not seen any blue smoke since, tried to recreate it to no avail so I'm happy and the car is running beautifully and cleanly!

POST 13Original post

Hi I saw the Dealer gave it a clean bill of health which is great. I'm boring I like to figure these issues out however. Did you get the puff, after coming off heavy engine overun (ie using the engine as a brake) possibly through a bend etc? If you did when you put your foot down again you would have burnt off any oil pulled down the valve guides. This can happen occasionally, and there is nothing wrong with a little oil coming down the valve guides, it's good for upper cylinder lubrication. People get very worried if they use oil, but over there in the combustion chamber arround the crowns of the pistons and especially the top rings a liitle extra lubrication helps! Regards Big Bob

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OMG - I don't believe it but it happenned again and so I went back to an indpendant porsche specialist who said it's one of two things - a) the OPC put too much oil in at the outset, he thinks this is likely as when he checked the oil level it was still on max despite it clearly being burnt off oil. Or 2) Oil seperator but they usually literally "pop" and you have smoke all the time apparently! So, I've gone back to the places it happenned, and floored it again just the same and now it seems ok so maybe it was the OPC over filling which seems amazing to me but then according to the technician i went out with the guys at the OPC are ******ing useless! It'll be under warranty but an occasional fault is tricky to diagnose isn't it? I'll monitor it over the next few weeks and see. It only happenned twice, 1) whilst heavy accelerating round a bend from a very slow start pulling out of a roundabout onto a corner and booting it round the bend and 2) on a hill start leading to a long right hand bend. :?

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

blue smoke saga continues Getting really hacked off with this now - Car's just come back from the garage, they had it for a week and having eliminated the OPC overfillig the oil possibility they decided to change the Oil Seperator, mainly because "that was all it could be". So, I got it back - took the car out, wellied it round a long sweeping bend and just as she changed into 4th another eruption of blue smoke billowed out the back! Can't flippin believe it! Has anyone ever had anything like this before?
