Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked Mapquest and it appears that you and I are approximately the same distance away from Robbinsville, NC, about 4 1/2 hours for each of us.
Leading evidence: 'Check mapquest and it appears' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'other way around' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check mapquest and it appears' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
In the winter, after the leaves have all fallen, no one is there but the motor cycle guys and they will not get in our way, most likely the other way around.

I think that we could get a big group from GA up there...the last few mountain runs we have made we have talked about it....I would probably be up for a run up there, find a nice bed and breakfast, and another run the following day....you may want to PM Lizard1 as he is the guy who normally leads up our N.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Are any of you guys in and around the Smokie Mountains interested in organizing a ride of THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON (
www.tailofthedragon.com)....one
of the twistiest rides in the world. I've ridden it a few times on a motorcycle.....it's amazing. I figure we could get guys from TN, NC, GA to participate. There are maps on the website I listed above, or for you who know the area, it begins in Robbinsville, NC. Nearby is the dam that Harrison Ford's character jumped off in THE FUGITIVE.....and there are great drives on the Cheralola Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway....in fact, the Smokies in general offers fantastic drives.......
Anyone interested? I'd make the drive from Nashville!!!!!
Richard - I would be interested. I checked Mapquest and it appears that you and I are approximately the same distance away from Robbinsville, NC, about 4 1/2 hours for each of us. However, I can't do it in August or first weekend in September. But if you get others that are interested on those weekends, then schedule it.
Dell, Mapquest indicates that is is only 30 1/2 hours for you! If you start out now, you can probably be there by the time the ride starts!
For those of you who are high rollers, and want a great hotel & fabulous food, try the Snowbird Mountain Resort , in Robbinsville....just a couple of miles from the Dragon.....you could make a romantic getaway w/the significant other!!!!! Dell? do you hear you thinking about it?
Actually, now that I have my thinking cap on, the best time to go is late Oct, when the leaves are in all their glorious autumn colors.....the Smoky Mts in Autumn are outrageous, and there are wonderful trips, such as Asheville, NC (Biltmore Estate), Cherokee, etc.
Tim.........I know I can ALWAYS count on you for a good chuckle when I log in. Cheers to you buddy
I will be in McLean next week from the 13-20 of August. But sans P-Car. One day though you can count me in! Sounds like alot of fun.
We can probably get quite a few Atl folks. It's only about an hour-1-1/2hr from our normal N. GA mountain run.
It would be better driving during non-"leaf-looker" time of the year, IMHO. Of course, we could drive early in the a.m. before the leaf-lookers have finished with their coffee.
I'm in Asheville and would really like to go, but I don't have a Porsche yet. Maybe I could rent one for the weekend and join you, since I hope/plan to make my purchase next spring.
Kevin - I was thinking the same thing when Richard mentioned October. It WOULD be a beautiful time to go but we could end up driving at a 20 MPH crawl!
You guys don't know the Dragon.....that's not the road the 20mph crowd frequents.....OR, maybe an after peak weekend....late autumn in the mountains.....
I would love to go and you can count me in, but late october is not a good time. It is the leaf season and there are tons of people, cars, and constabulary everywhere. In the winter, after the leaves have all fallen, no one is there but the motor cycle guys and they will not get in our way, most likely the other way around. I grew uo near there, as did my son. He and his friend have some semi organized events there, but all cold weather, no snow, which is mid november to 1st of Jan and early march.....generally. The police and park rangers pretty much look the other way during those times as well and accomodations are more reasonably priced.
On the Dragon itself, physics keep the speeds down. However, the adrennaline charged run up to and down from it - where the polizia sit - is where one needs to be careful about the speed.
ps - the C4S was made for this road, jmho
not too far from there is another road called top of the world by the locals. I've never known anyone to get a 500 fine in that area, and my first trip was around 1969 in a 50 VW bug, but I suppose it's possible. actual speed is not the main attraction anyway. Knowing when to brake and for how long is the trick, as long as your brakes can hold up. last time I was there, winter of 04, my stock 996 brakes got really hot, softened up quite a bit . My wife got sick to her stomach so by the time she was feeling better they were OK

I fat fingered that. it was a 1959 VW, my first car. paid 125 dollars for it. 32 HP I think and no headliner. The emergency brake worked much better thanj the pedal.
