I adjusted the lumbar support with the pillows and ended up having the most comfortable drive.

I checked ebay (US & Germany) for about a year before I was able to find one.

I installed the Black Forest Industries alcantara shift boot on my 996.1 a month ago, here's before and after pics:

Suggestion
For those of you considering GT3 seats, here is what the leather graphite grey seats look like which have velcro leather cushions and velcro pads to adjust lumbar and angle.

Suggestion
When you move to an aftermarket seat, you may have the ability to recline, move forward and backward, but most likely no ability to adjust lumbar nor seat right.

5) FVD shifter with yellow trim (this did not work out because I did not like the feel...went back to stock)
Thank god the era of carbon decals has ended!
I always wanted hounds tooth seat centers but my current Porsche has savanah beige and I just dont think it would work.
My buddy has his kids pick a playfull fabric which he used to replace his sagging headliner. It looks awesome.
Home Depot for color match interior for touch up of every mm of graphite gray. Fire extinguisher. BT. Painted console and center stack exterior color. Cleaned leather. Moleskin for seat belt receptacles. Rear shelf carpet. Custom steel shifter. Extendmyseat. Pedal set. Took a sample of wrap for wheel center stripe. Tiny key fob emblem for batwing.
I've been thinking of doing hounds tooth on my rear center console. I also have the Savannah interior and was thinking either tan and brown or red and black hounds tooth. My floor mats are black with red lettering and I like how they look. I have a spare console that I can play around with. I'm not a fan of painting it to match the exterior (green). When I was a kid, if your dad didn't pay for the upgraded interior you would have body color parts inside. I guess that stigma is still with me.
Steam_mill,
Moleskin in black sticks to the plastic on the receptacle and the fuzzy part on the outside is a buffer so you don’t scratch the center console.
In chronological order...
#1 - Bought car ('99 Carrera 4 Coupe 6sp Manual) with Full Leather interior (Savanah Beige)
#2 - Aluminum Pedals (cheap ones - $125.00 for all 4 IIRC)
#3 - Three spoke "sport" steering wheel
#4 - Numeric Racing Shifter w/cables
#5 - Coco Mats (navy/natural - Ocean Blue Metallic exterior)
#6 - I bought a spare center console to paint OBM (match exterior)...haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm shooting for sometime before April, as that's when I get the back with a nice FSI stage II track performer engine in 'er...
*** Oops, I forgot the Function First shift ****...
Here are a few things that I did to upgrade the interiors of my 996 and my 997:
Installed a double-DIN head unit with modern navigation, Sirius XM, etc. (996)
Installed a new rearview mirror with Homelink (996)
Installed a painted center console to match my car's paint (997)
Installed an upgraded steering wheel (OE aluminum look steering wheel in my 996)
Installed contrasting floor mats to bring a little bit of "pop" to the interior (996 and 997)
Installed a variety of leather bits (Some OE, some from Exclusive Option), including: leather armrest with model logo and stitching, leather mirror triangles, upgraded leather pieces fo the center console with custom stitching, etc. (Mostly 997, but some in the 996 also)
Had the leather bolsters replaced on both front seats, and had seat heating added during the process (996)
Scraped of the scratched and nicked "soft feel" paint on the center console and the horseshoe around the radio/vents and painted. Looks fantastic!
Installed silver rings around the gauges.

AFTER:
SILVER RINGS, HORSESHOE, and 4 way flasher surround:
Installed new coco mats. Still need to install my new(er) shift **** to replace the scratched up one, and find a replacement parking brake handle. Also planning a new head unit...

I like those checkerboard mats. I have a pair of Vans that would go nicely with them.
My car’s interior was a sea of gray when I bought it so a lot of what I’ve done was to break that up.
Everything I’ve done is reversible in case I ever want to put it back to original.
A 3 spoke sport steering to replace the gray 4 spoke, black center console and a black shift ****/gaiter with 997 shifter.
The car had gray floor mats when I picked it up but it had black and gray Coco Mats in a box with extra parts so I put ‘em in.
I couldn’t see any reason why I would ever need a cigarette lighter so I swapped it out for a USB charger.
Also a new Continental head unit and Focal speaker upgrade.
I got a mat that covers the rear seat backs when they’re down. I wish I hadn’t picked red for the lettering though because there is nothing else red anywhere on the car so it looks a little out of place.
Insanely overpriced umbrella that will never get used.
It’s made specifically to go in the passenger side door sill cubby.
I also picked up a rear view mirror with a compass that I haven’t gotten around to installing.
I have done a whole bunch of upgrades I did to my 996.1 and only one was a failure:
1) 996 GT3 euro Seats
2) Agency roll bar
3) Rear seats removed
4) New .2 instrument cluster with yellow FVD faceplates
5) FVD shifter with yellow trim (this did not work out because I did not like the feel...went back to stock)
6) 997 shifter to shorten shifts
7) .2 HVAC controller
8) Extended 997 GT3 seat belt recepticals
9) Porsche aluminum pedals
10) Fire extinguisher
11) 5 point harnesses
12) hard wired radar detector power
13) GT3 console delete
14) three spoke OEM steering wheel
I am sure I missed some other things...
My next project when car is out of storage is to install front and rear dashcam like I have done with my Turbo S once I have the car out of winter storage.
I installed it about one month after buying the car back in late March of 2017 so I never really had a chance to get used to the stock one. I wouldn't say it's my favorite **** of all time but it's fine for what I use the car for.
I have Orient Red metallic over Savannah.
The car only has standard interior, but it did have console paint to match as factory option.
I removed rear seats and belts and added a Dassport roll bar, that I had painted to match. It has a chrome fire extinguisher mounted.
I added a Techart style GT3 Flat bottom smaller diameter thicker grip steering wheel.
I added a new leather boot with color match stitching and then disassembled the shift **** top and painted color match.
I added an OBD II monitoring system that fits into the area where the CD storage unit was, this was offered by a member on either 6speed or Rennlist, it is really nice, because it gives you and CEL codes right away and the ability to clear instantly, also has nice features like throttle position, exact digital rpm etc. Rennline phone mount.
Since installing the wheel, I have also added an Ecliptech II shift light, with also feature launch control light feature.
I had some faux beige Techart mats with red trim made, but have never used them ( posted in parts for sale).
Rennline aluminum floor mats.
I purchased stainless gauge rings to install after I to take out gauge surround and paint to match, I have the thin dash trim pieces that go across horizontal, but have not painted them yet.
There has been a few sets of Factory Savannah GT3 seats come up for sale, but they have been always out of my price range.
@SoCal911t
Wow - that looks great. That was the shift **** that I was going to get, but a fellow Rennlister had a near-new factory shift **** so I bought that from him. How do you like the Continental radio? Also I need some new speakers - at least one of the front speakers in my car is blown - are you happy with your replacements?
Thanks! Daryll
Love it or hate it, I went full retro with my recent reupholstering project.
Also added seat heaters controlled by factory switches, Pioneer double din, hard wired passport, dash cam, compass mirror w/ homelink, rear seat delete with subs. Just some personal upgrades.
sasilverbullet, how hard was it to remove the soft touch coating from the center console to prep for paint. I have heard it is difficult. I have several interior pieces I would like to paint as they are nicked and need to be refinished. I want to paint a different color to break up the interior and am not a fan of the Soft touch anyway.
I like all the modern features of the Continental but I think the stock Becker sounds better. The speakers are great. I used Focal 100AC in the rear and Focal ES 100 K in front. Whatever speakers you decide on, I highly recommend the Metra 71-017C '
Speaker Wiring Harnesses
' from Crutchfield. It allows you to use the stock speaker plugs saving you form having to hack the stock wiring.
It was via Amazon Prime for $7.99. I removed the rubber cover plug thingy.

Royal pain! Took quite a while. I ended up using Acetone on a rag to help loosen it up. Another hard part is sanding the plastic smooth once you get the old stuff off. The plastic has a rough surface and unless you sand it super smooth it looks crappy when you paint it.
I had practiced on the piece that snaps next to the handbrake. Then I spent a whole Saturday just doing the console.
I also took the handbrake completely off and refinished it also, that wasn't hard.
Well worth the labor! I think it looks fantastic! The pictures don't do it justice...
Getting it off is not that hard, getting the new stuff on and stretched correctly is a pain. Porsche has special equipment that "thins" the back of the leather. I would pay a pro to do it.
@Woodman71
it was available in the mid to late seventies and early eighties in 911, 924, and 928.
My first P-car was a 1978 928 with pascha, and I've had a soft spot for it every since
There is some pretty cool upgrades in this thread. My upgrades were kind of done fast as I was trying to get my car back on the road and I will be revisiting them when I do my motor swap (probably next winter) but here's what I've done so far. Still making the speaker box for it and it will be black/green theme. Zoom in on the rear seats and you can see I had those reupholstered with fresh leather and green stitching to match.
Good thread, its hard to fine stuff for upgrades for the interior.
Great - thank you - that tip is great on the speaker wires. One thing that I do not want to do is cut the factory wiring for either the head unit or the speakers. Still deciding to go with the Continental (quick, easy) or a double-din unit (Apple carplay). I'm not too concerned about sound quality - I have the base system with no door speakers so there are limits to what it can do.
Daryll
Replaced the softtouch lower center console with an OEM wrapped one. I checked ebay (US & Germany) for about a year before I was able to find one. Easily the best upgrade you can do, imo. Stitching, color, fit and everything is perfect since it's OEM.
Have done a few things:
Short throw shifter
MOMO Race steering wheel
Pioneer AVIC 8200 double DIN sound system
New factory shift ****, tried a ball shaped one but could not get the boot to fit so I went back to stock
8 Subwoofer with custom box similar to Bose one. Sounds awesome and does not affect standard carpeting and mats
Magnetic cell phone mount
This photo still shows the original wheel but you can see the head unit and sub
It came to me as a trade (+$$) from a 996 owner in California that purchased a 996 that PO installed this wheel.
He thought it to be a DCM, but in fact it was not.
I tracked down fabricators of Porsche steering wheels, matched the stitching and seams and determined it is without a doubt, Techart.
It is about an inch smaller diameter, the thickness is increased. The leather is ultra high grade, feels like you are driving with deer skin gloves.
The smaller diameter does have a negative effect on viewing the tachometer. I installed a programmable progressive shift light, the set up is really nice.
The steering wheels were offered in the Techart 996 catalogs, but at crazy pricing starting over $2000.00.
997 Short Shifter (amazing mod)
OEM carbon fiber shift **** (nothing more satisfying)
OEM carbon fiber cluster surround (discrete but a nice touch)
artic silver center console (painted to match exterior obviously)
artic silver smoker delete ashtray (bumper plugs does great work)
rennline integrated phone mount with $12 chinese iPhone plug to Aux for music/phone through OEM speakers (best updgrade ever BTW)
Looking for:
OEM red seats belts
OEM winter mats (Porsche finally released these!)
OEM carbon fiber parking brake
OEM steering wheel in perforated/air leather (had OEM air leather wheel and shift **** on B5 Audi S4 and it made me happy every day)…
Like others, I did a quite a few things to dress the interior up and also take care of issues with the continually scratching finish on the horseshoe and center rear console. My upgrades: Alum. Pedals, Custom Lloyd Mats with red piping, Red tach face, Custom DTC steering wheel w/ red leather stripe and stitching, leather rear console, Leather console armrest, Custom Porsche Exclusive leather horseshoe, iPad Mini install with Alpine receiver, Ash tray delete, Fire extinguisher with Rennline mount.
Redoing our interior. Was a basic interior before but changinf it to the upgraded leather with blue stitching. Doing rhe whole interior. Had to redo some panels as rhe glue came undone in the summer heat.
here is the passenger door panel
God day, the salon in my car is new, brown genuine leather, so I decided to changed the head unit, because I wanted
normal navigation
. If you have any recommendation I will be happy.
I redid the center console, got rid of the ashtray, covered the console in leather, and moved the window switches to the horseshoe. Still deciding what to do with the upper center console, shifter, and rest of the interior.
Double din conversion is on my project list. Will post pics on my "project" thread as I tackle that. Also looking at custom floor mats, custom wheel crest, and accent seat belts on the interior list.
SIMPLE, maybe 20 min to do. Go to home depot and buy the small universal opener. then follow these instructions. My car already had the button but if it doesn't you can buy one here.

If you still have the removable ashtray, take it to Home Depot and have it color-matched in a satin latex paint. Use a small foam brush to touch up the scratches. It works well. I've been doing it for years and then I saw it suggested in a recent edition of Panarama.
I did the Home Depot color match paint on the soft touch. 90% better
Then found a perfect match spray can for grey interior plastic console parts to match
the leather parts. Then spraying other parts artic silver, bought every color made to test.
Had too much grey:
Added silver painted console, ashtray delete, Rennline phone mount, silver gauge surrounds:
Finally, a T96 wheel:
Probably will do some Rennline pedals and maybe black floor mats down the road. Also looking for a silver horseshoe.
I love the interior. Where did you get it, how did you do it, how much was it? I've looked at getting the material and having it done, but I'm hoping for premade seat covers. This has always been my favorite Porsches interior and would look amazing with my fake Fuchs.
My daughter and I painted some of the horseshoe to match the factory painted center console. Still have a bit more to do. Trying to make it a little less grey inside.
I think Porsche frowns upon aftermarket companies using their name on non-sanctioned products
They do pop up every once in a while but I think Porsche squashes them pretty quickly. I got the ones that say Nurburgering on them... Not my first choice but they're fine. They fit well, were easy to install and feel great - the fact that I can't see them when I'm driving and very few people actually understand what they say are both pluses in my book
Oh yeah, they were around $100 for the whole set including the dead pedal... That's a big plus!
The gray can look dreary for sure. It can be ok if pristine but it often is not. The carpet takes on a bit of a lavendar hue sometimes, just not good either. Replace, re-dye?
From another member that upgraded to the Rennline version. Mine where originally purchased on ebay with no name on them and they look and feel great (I drive barefoot) though they do get hot after a full day in the sun here in Hawaii.
I think Nurburgering must be a fast food restaurant?
I drove the Nordschleife of the Nurburgring once, but that's another story for another day.
I have rennline pedal covers (+ dead pedal and accelerator). I've been to their shop and met some of the crew. Good folks doing great work for us enthusiasts.
- Numeric racing shifter - not really interior but meh
- Tequipment Porsche script handbrake (e-brake)
- Ash tray delete
- Cigarette lighter delete/non smokers package
- Removed rear seats + belts
- Wanted to retain original CDR-23 so installed a Dension unit with Bluetooth
Just saw your question. I bought the material from Sierra Madre for about $300 and had a local upholstery shop sew up the inserts for about $500. Seat heaters were sourced from Amazon, but ended up replacing drivers side foam with new Porsche parts that came with the heating elements.
Before and after of my interior. Three spoke steering wheel, black gauge pod, gauge rings, and double din conversion. Little closer to the GT3 look with the Savanah Beige color.

Ive posted these before, but in another thread - I suppose they belong here
theyre 997 hardback sport seats with painted backs and the Porsche crest in the headrest... they make a huge difference...(for the better I think). They came in Natural brown which I love, but I thought it necessary to do the centers in Savanna Beige to tie them into the rest of the interior. I then did the outer edges of the rear seat backs to break up the sea of beige back there...
- Replaced the gray console with new black console, with tray (replaced ashtray)
- New Double DIN
- replaced vents with new black vents
- Replaced gray leather side pieces on console with black leather
- New horseshoe around radio
- New black mats from Lloyds
Planned:
- Replace most of the gray trim pieces with black
- black door cards
- black rear pieces
- replace rear seats with new foam and black leather
- new front seats
- new steering wheel
Still figuring out what I want to do with the interior. I have a placeholder seat to throw on the drivers side for a bit. GT3 delete was done this past winter. Want to figure out what I would like the final seat setup to be.
Only other possible plans down the line would be:
- Personal steering wheel
- Maybe a replacement black center console to break up some savannah (with savannah bits still on it)
- Fit in the single din Carplay unit opposed to the double din. That is long term though
Forgive the nike's, only average pic I found of the delete lol
My Nike SBs are great driving shoes. Thin, flat sole, can feel everything under the foot. I am going to get another pair just for driving, since I work in my SBs they are kinda shot.
Any of you guys get the Magnus Walker SBs? The first owner ordered the car with the full carbon interior so that was a nice touch and the rear seats were removed in favor for the cage. All that was added was a GT3 steering wheel w/leather airbag cover, GT3 shift **** assembly and the Porsche Tequipment cage that was painted Guards Red. Right now I'm on the hunt for a set of Bride Japan Carbon Vorgas or a set of Recaro ProFi XLs in leather. The Recaros can be ordered and have the leather done after the fact but the Vorgas have been discontinued for some time and Stradia IIIs are the new flagship recline-able seat.
I'm also shopping for new(er) seats that will fit the 996, accommodate a harness and also tilt/recline. The local upholsterer tells me he can recover any seat using the microsuede/vinyl/Dinamica/faux-leather as a template so the material isn't the deciding factor--it will be the aforementioned parameters, comfort and durability. Unfortunately I know little about seats. Recaro seems to the most expensive, but other than materials, how do they compare to offerings from Bride ($1000-2000 each), Braum ($650-1050 pair), Sparco ($330-3300 each), Cobra ($750-$1600), Corbeau or NRG ($534)? There are two RennListers who are very happy with the SickSpeed (one Gaigin V1, one Suzuka) they installed in their 996s (at $460 & $600 for the
pair
, respectively). If I'm planning on recovering them with leather, any downside about those seats?
It really depends on what you're looking to do really(and spend), I'm sure if you're actually racing any of those seats would be safe and in reality that's the true purpose of swapping them out to begin with. I've owned higher end Recaros(ASM SR3), Bride Zeta III and a set of Bride Vorgas... the material is really the only difference and there is a "JDM" tax on real deal Brides from Japan vs their Taiwanese counterparts. Only thing I'd check is their compatibility with mounting hardware and rails, that'll determine the seat swap's true price point at the end of the day. I never raced my Z other than a couple DEs and a couple car shows that allowed you to run your car on Homestead Motor Speedway's inner dog leg so maybe I'm not the best person to ask in regards to big picture safety variables from the other seats you mentioned. I've found the Recaros and such are a "buy once, cry once" option.
I bought Sparcos for my corvette from Ireland (Murray motorsports) for ~800$ shipped for the pair thanks to some exchange rate ****ery.
I would recommend something that is FIA rated if you plan on doing anything more than an occasional DE for fun.
I really enjoyed them, especially for the price. But they're certainly not as cool as having RECARO across the head rest
Still all original graphite grey interior. But I did add a Heigo black cage, GT3 seats, blue Sabelt harnesses, and black aluminum track mats. Sea of grey seems to have been broken up. Unfortunately, didn't have the time to shine up the interior before taking the picture.
I put a set of Recaro Sportster CS's in my car and they were a perfect fit for how I use it. The only drawback is they are only set up for 4-point harnesses, so I have stuck with the stock belts as it's mostly a street use car. If you go with the newer Sportster GTs those can be ordered to be 5-point compatible
Nice work. What color did you use? It looks like a somewhat bizarre color choice in the abstract, but it works really well with the rest of the interior. Very well done.
For me they're extremely comfortable and I find the additional bolstering makes me less fatigued after a long drive since I'm not sliding around the factory leather seats as much.
The car came with fixed-back Corbeaus installed but they're not comfortable and render the rear unusable. It also has a DAS Sport half cage...and rear seats. I think I'll leave the cage, delete the rear seats and switch to tilt/reclinable seats that can accommodate the six-point harness. I don't race, never done a HPDE day but will probably do one, once I get other things sorted, but it's 99.9% a street car.
The outside of the car is .....a 22 year old car with some scratches & dings and I'm A-OK with that--no plans to make it pretty. I'd like to make the interior much nicer, starting with the seats. The upholsterer says he can take the cover off any seat I buy to use it as a template for whatever I choose, so we're looking at leather samples. Spending $3000-4000 on seats is in the budget, if it includes the desired form & function. Likely I will recover the seat, no matter what how it comes so I don't want to blow the budget just buying the seats. Are the cheap SickSpeeds going to be 90% as awesome as the Recaro Sportster GTs except for the surface fabric? I can live with 90%.
Unless I can gather some opinions here, I'll have to pony up $600 for the
pair
and ride them around for a few weeks then decide to recover them or dump them on eBay.
My 03 4S was a sea of grey so I swapped out the steering wheel, console, e-brake handle and shift **** for black versions. Already had the deviated carpet but added black/grey coco mats.
I did the Sickspeed seats and love them. One minor issue: the driver side ratchet adjust for seat tilt broke in less than 100 miles. I set it where I want it vertically and then lean a little pressure and it ratchets back 2-3 clicks. Luckily the roll bar stops it from laying down on me, lol. Sickspeed was quick to respond, sent me a new seat right away and told me to take the broken seat to a welder and have them weld into a fixed position, mount it to an office chair base (they sell them for $60) and I have a really cool, matching my Pcar, office seat!!!! Win win for me
There are a lot of very cool seats that are available. It comes down to how you are going to use them.
One of the things I had to think about regarding seats was safety on the track plus ease in using on the street, not to mention comfort. If you plan on tracking your car more seriously than a few times, you want a fixed back. The reason is that the more you track the car, the faster you will become and the more safety you will need. In essence, you want to eliminate any risk of the seat malfunctioning when you need it most. The belts need to be tight at all times to protect you front to back and side to side. If you are just going to drive around on the street its not as important because you probably won't get into an accident at high speed. However, from a safety standpoint on the street, I still prefer a fixed back in my Porsche. Not as concerned in my SUV because of its size.
I ended up going with GT3 seats because they were safe on the track plus, you could easily push them back and forward to get in and out of the car. From a comfort standpoint, the cushions are attached to the seat by Velcro, and they come with lumbar support pads which are like little 5x7 inch pillows with Velcro. So you can adjust your lumbar support any way you want.
A couple of years ago, I decided that I wanted to drive my car from Chicago to Phila and back to visit my son at college, and enjoy the PA turnpike thru western PA. I adjusted the lumbar support with the pillows and ended up having the most comfortable drive. My back felt better than driving my Audi's for long distance which have completely adjustable seats in every way possible.
I'm really appreciating the seat talk here. I find the stock seats start getting unbearable after an hour or so behind the wheel. The seatback feels like it has way too much curve in the lumbar area but maybe I'm just shaped weirdly.
Nah, we all come in different shapes and sizes. Seat comfort and the functionality in what you want is critical. The problem is they cost a lot of money so you gotta make sure you get the right ones. Never thought that I would say the GT3 seats were so damn comfortable. But the ability to add and move the little pillows with Velcro is worth it's weight in gold.
Nope, youre right. The plain-Jane 996 seats arent good. The 997 seats are much, much better. Im rehearsing ways to break the news to my wife that I want Sportsters for the 996.
Depending on what town you are in, there are a lot of "racing" shops in many towns that sell all of the seats we are talking about. If you have one close by, you can test them out in their showroom.
Just remember this: Oem seats have electronic adjustment of lumbar support as well as recline, in addition to raising and lowering the seat.
When you move to an aftermarket seat, you may have the ability to recline, move forward and backward, but most likely no ability to adjust lumbar nor seat right. If this is a concern, and you want an aftermarket seat, then you have to find one that allows you to adjust lumbar with Velcro pillows. Not to mention that you may need to change the rails to either raise it or lower it.
You get the idea.
Has anyone found seat upgrade options that look good in a graphite gray interior? I dont really want to go to two tone route I actually kind of love the graphite gray
For those of you considering GT3 seats, here is what the leather graphite grey seats look like which have velcro leather cushions and velcro pads to adjust lumbar and angle. You can get the same seats made by recarro without the Porsche label in either leather or fabric.
Sorry the camera angle makes everything distorted in shape.
I have a graphite grey interior, and I've liked adding more black into the interior for contrast. Even if you like graphite, which I do as well, the black makes the grey *pop* even more. It's not diluting it, it's accenting it.
Otherwise, I'm going with the company "Exclusive Option" to add more leather into the interior to upmarket certain items that look and free pretty blah. I'm planning on doing the following:
All in leather:
Sun visors
Fuse Cover
Mirror adjustment triangles
Vents
Center Console lid and surrounding area
Handbrake handle re-do
Leather 3-spoke steering wheel
Re-covering my sports seats in GG Nappa with Crest
And then the plan is to paint the center console body colour, as well as the seat control panel. That'll hopefully liven it up.
Eventual plan is to do black contrast carpet, and to turn the back seats into 964RSA-style cubbies with a Rubystone half cage.
To echo Glenn’s thoughts on seats.
Seat construction AND mounting.
Harness construction AND mounting
Are a place that even though I am budget minded, I did not spare an expense to get what I felt like were time tested and certified components and mounted them to the T of the MFG recommendations.
That said, I find the Recaro I run to be the least of my comfort worries for multi hour trips. Maybe the fact that I have confidence in them in the event I bin the car helps to negate any physical discomfort.
Seats are a critical component of safety on the street or the track, whatever you get, get it with the worst in mind.
ETA - a lot of times when you watch track videos from the roll bar vantage point, you see a lot of flex in the seat / mounting. Pretty proud of my setup - if you watch my videos, it’s rock solid.
Totally agree about 996 seats. Swapped mine out for a pair from a 997 and it made a huge difference. The stock seats were fine for short trips but anything of length was bad news. 997 seats significantly better, distance no longer an issue.
Still a work in progress, but GT3 euro buckets, rear seat delete, and Riviera blue belts so far. Going to tackle the dash and center console this fall/winter.
Good comparison. I may eventually go to static mounts. But you have to do what Zbomb did and get a removable steering wheel connector as well as settle on a steering wheel, which has been as tough as figuring out what wing to put on the back.
But, I got plenty more years left with the car to figure it out. That's part of the fun of building a car for you!
Has anyone mounted an SR3/Speed?
Have a planted base in here and have it pretty much pushed as far to the driver door as I can but the **** looks like it is very slightly touching the center console. I may have a few more mm’s to play with. I’ve seen tons of pics with the seat so I figured people got it to work.
Here is just the test fit. Need to grab a bolt and nut to mount the seat belt receiver though.
Hold over until I go fixed back
I havent done much, but did the GT3 center console delete, BFI alacantra boot/shift **** and a custom alacantra wrapped steering wheel. Thinking of adding some CF pieces to match the CF door sills from factory.
I have the same color car and have been contemplating painting it like yours. Problem has been getting a good set of pictures to see what it really looks like. Anytime you want to show more pictures, I bet there are a bunch of us who would like to see them. Nice job with the paint.
This Speed/SR3 kinda fits bad. On a planted bracket which very well may be too low. **** on the inside is like a mm or two from the center console and if you slide back it looks like it will hit. Also when I slide the rails back, it hits the side.
Not thrilled. Ordered an ABE Pole Position though. Couple back to back impulse buys lol.
I've seen other pics of 996's with these seats so who knows. I could be an idiot and installing wrong, but I doubt that (the install I mean, I know I'm an idiot already
)
Rino,
Wish I could help. May be as simple as different brackets but I never installed that seat. Someone on RL most likely has and will respond. Depending on where you got it, they may have a simple solution for you.
I've seen pics of them mounted with different mounts. That could be the key but I don't understand the width. I guess if you get it high enough over that lip you may be okay, but looks like your center console could get destroyed from rubbing. Unless you pop off the reclining **** or something.
Here is a set from 6speed I found (old thread).
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...seats-fit.html
Boooooo (j/k)! How much are you off? I'm starting to think the Vorgas might be too wide at the base now that I look at the measurements of your Recaros. Might have to really look at CS' now or ProFi XLs.
I am going to test fit some spacers from home depot to see if I can get it high enough to clear. Should only need 1/4-1/2" and if that works get some plates to layer in between the base and the rail and see how that works out.
I've installed a set of Sparco QRT Performance, they are black leather on the sides and alcantra in the middle. Very nice. Props to @jnelso who also has a set.
Edit: The seat belt receivers are mounted low on the tunnel side, the buckle goes through the hole. It's a bit of a fiddle to get them clicked.
Is this your original steering wheel that's been wrapped or a new wheel? Do you have a link to where you bought it? My C2 CF steering wheel is crumbling and I need a replacement! Thanks!
Good to know. I went with an order for an ABE because I was too worried about that.
In the meantime I grabbed some spacers to lift the seat off the base and see if that gets me the clearance I need. If so I will get some steel plates from Home Depot and drill them out. Once I figure this all out I will add to Chuck Norris's thread on what is needed to get a Speed/SR3 in the right way since that to me could be a very popular reclining seat for our cars.
I worked with
http://dallassteeringwheel.com/
on re-wrapping an OEM steering wheel.
They were fantastic to work with and I can not recommend them enough.
Cost, quality, communication, etc. Everything was top notch!
So many great upgrades. What sucks about having "Savannah Beige" interior, you would either have to custom upholster seats or find a used set of GT3 seats in the same color. Or just put black aftermarket seats in there which I don't want to do.
I see all these awesome interior upgrades and I decided to share. I'm going with of a more industrial/"metallic" look. I also wanted to simplify the interior a bit and remove a few things.
I will ask here, as I did in the thread linked above.... Do the Wedge or Planted mounts increase headroom at all with Recaro reclining seats? I'd LOVE a set of CS or SRD or Sport Toplines but I need to sit as far back (or further) than stock as well as lower to make the upgrade worth my efforts.
That **** is the ticket for making space around the large Recaro reclining *****
These look AMAZING in the 996 as do the CS seats. These fit better in my eyes, though
I raised it up 3/4 of an inch and still wasn't happy. I think you need to go up nearly a couple inches. Even then, the **** was touching my center console. Scrapped the plan and put my factory seat back in until the new one shows up. Looking like a winter project based on the shipping forecast.
Parking brakes aren't that glamorous but they do contribute. Fooling around with changing my gray one out for oh, wait for it, black. Surprise. And for the heck of it with the embedded logo. Seems like these things are always beat up. Don't know how but apparently there's a lot action around the emergency brake for some folks. Anyway, what is this finish and how do I get it restored?

Seems to me I don't remember seeing info on these. Little thing but would be nice to address. Kind of just a little Pebble or hammered finish on the bright alloy actually. We'll have to think about that. Meanwhile got the handle black and may do the base also. Leather dye is an improvement. I need to figure out how to take off the gloss.
Added some silver dashboard trim strips (same color as other inside trim) to break up all the gray. Three pieces across the dash.
This winterIi plan to paint the horseshoe and the console body color (Arctic Silver).
Looks great. I thought Lloyds no longer provided logos on their carpet due to licensing issues (still seems to be the case on their website). It's interesting that they are available on eBay.
Yeah I contacted Lloyds before I ordered these to understand the issue. Seems these Ebay ones were ordered or manufactured before the licensing issue?
Who knows...
I did the silver dash strips as well. They look great. I don't know why Porsche cheaped out and didn't do this from the factory. They should be silver by default, and then optionally be wood grain or carbon fiber if the car has those options.
Whatever the licensing issue, it must of come up after November 2018 because they sold me this deck mat back then. I was trying to break up the sea of gray with this mat but its always looked out of place somehow. I have a Coco Mat on the way to replace it so the Lloyds might be up for grabs soon.
2018ish sounds about right, timewise. I don't know the date, but they used to do all the logos and then suddenly stopped. I assume nobody cared about the logos for a while, but once it was raised as an issue, they shut down all of them. I think do have a few logos, but those are licensed. Not sure why they don't license with all the manufacturers -- I guess either too expensive or manufacturers don't agree to license them.
I bought a used set from DC Automotive. About half the price than new and as good as new. Color is Speed Silver, V03. They have several sets in different colors so you can go wild! I kept the originals in case i want to do something else later. I imagine you could remove the old ones and repaint. But, if you remove them with the dash still in the car, i understand that the mounting pins get broken.
They do improve the appearance of the dash, just not so much monochromatic, IMHO. I think the accountants were involved in the decisions on the interior.
With the dash in, a PITA. As i read somewhere on the forum (you have to search a while to find it) you have to remove stuff both ends, like the inside temp sensor, ignition swithc, and some other bits to get in behind it. There are something like 10 fasteners behind the long strip that have to be removed, the smaller strips have only a few. Some have ended up gluing the replacement strip in place. That's why i waited until i had the dash out, then its easy.
It's a real PITA especially on an older glovebox-less model. Reaching up to remove the tiny fasteners is next to impossible, more so if you've got big hands. There are old threads out there describing two ways to do it. After trying the less invasive way of trying to remove the fasteners from behind the dash, I did the solder iron way. You've got to have some cahones for this and confidence in yourself. Basically you use the hot tip of a solder iron to melt out the fastener attachments from the front. You still have to remove stuff as az968 said. Afterward you glue in the new strips.
Sport Seats in Metropol Blue leather with Martini livery colors in plaid cloth. Just got them back from the upholstery shop a week or two ago.
These are going in a Boxster project I'm working on. The finished interior will be more 996 than most 996's when I'm complete.
These are awesome. One of my future goals (which may never happen) is to get my savannah seats redone like this but the backs and centers with the green pepita print.
For those of you that have more skill than I do for color matching...
If you have a seal grey 996 with a graphite grey interior...
And you are looking to paint your lower console, horshoe and air vents a 996 color, what color would you use?
Don't know if seal grey would get lost with a graphite grey interior. Maybe another 996 color that is darker grey?
Picture of my interior including Rennlist black aluminum track mats.
I think the Seal Grey shows up just enough.
This weekend adding the silver dash trim strips to finish up my interior spiff up. Need to take the emer brake handle out to paint the base seal grey eventually.
It probably
will
be for sale but I might need it for a template for the Coco Mat replacement.
I received the new Coco Mat yesterday and was expecting something like this.
But this is what I got.
As you can see, without the cut-outs, it doesn't fit and looks like crap.
It looks like CocoMats is going to work with me but it sucks that it's going to involve shipping it back to be fixed. If anyone was considering one of these, I would hold off until they figure out what's going on with the pattern they're using.
Brushed gauge rings, OMP pedals, Blackline dead pedal, Prototipo wheel, NRG QR, Black Forest weighted ****, RedLine boot.
RennLine footboard, although not loving it as Ive got a non-standard accelerator pedal so it looks odd.
Cool interior with the contrast in colors and steering wheel. Just one question, how do you heal toe shift with half a pedal?
Is that an oil gauge I see?
Just finished doing some minor paint work on the gauge surround and radio/climate surround. Center Console was done from factory, metallic silver. Have a GT3 center console delete I need to install next and the suncoast GT3 RS alcantara shift ****. Probably going to also pick up some aluminum Rennline pedal overlays. Would love to find some granite gray sport seats In the future.
It seems like it would be cheaper to have it altered locally but they're sending me their pattern which I'm going alter and then send back with the mat. I'll try to do a good job since all future 996 deck mats will be made based on my template.
That crossed my mind but I can't see any difference between a paper template that was traced around the Lloyd's mat vs the actual mat. Cocomats has really stepped up on this and I can't say enough about their customer service. There doesn't seem to be any reason to add additional shipping costs at this point.
Sean, you have first dibs. Once I get the corrected Cocomat, I'll PM you.
trying out darker pieces I recently picked up...trading the vinyl storage bin lid for black leather. might want to refinish the leather but looks good now that I got rid of the soft touch gray center console for a painted one.

And working on the shift ****/boot combo. Refinished my shift boot trim with aluminum flake paint, those things get pretty haggard and it really stands out since they are attention-getters anyway.
^^^ Why? Did you upgrade your electronics as well? What made you decide to go this route? Did you have rattles? Or, were you just looking to reduce noise in general? Looks like you did an awesome job!
Ok. Got the trim strips done. Not a cake walk. The strip under the glove box was really easy. The little boogers on either side of the steering…not so much. But they do make a nice enough, lower cost highlight. So I’m done fiddling with the interior until I find my unicorn 996 gray manual sport seats with crest. As my wife said, “Good luck with that.”
Got a great deal on some sports seats black, red stitching and alcantara centers. Really completed my two tone look I was pushing for. Was a little hesitant going that way with the seats but glad I did. Might explore some steering wheel options next- granite gray/black combo
.all winter? Im swapping my Boxster Red interior for black. I was thinking two days..
your sound proofing took most of the time I hope. How much weight did it add?
40 hours was approx the total time. The interior part isnt terrible keeping all the parts separate and labeled was key. The sound proofing didnt add too much weight but it sure tightens up the atmosphere in the cab. Road noise makes me crazy
You got a couple of choices.
1. You can go to bumperplugs.com of which they do it and you need to send your part to them for exchange. Prices are on the website.
2. Do it yourself which costs paint, sandpaper and your time. A bunch of guys have done it with success. Some of which are outlined on this thread. Wish I had the skills to do this without mucking it up big-time.
3. Or you can go to a body shop and have it done. Costs can be all over the map. When I finally settle on aero for the exterior, I plan on going into the body shop for the parts to be painted, exterior touch-up as well as get various interior parts done. Figure I can negotiate a better price per unit if they are painting a number of items.
#2 will cost you 4-6 hours of your time and less than $100 for plastic prep, primer, color and clear. Plenty of diy instruction on the interweb. Prep is key. Do your horseshoe and any other bits at the same time. Great winter days project.
#3 would cost $200-400 in my area.
Hey everyone, I recently purchased a 2001 C2 and Im looking for a little advice on some interior mods and planning. First thing Im going to do is have the bucket seat inserts done in houndstooth/pepita. Second thing is having the centre console covered in black leather. The third thing is where my question lies, once the hounds tooth is done Id like to introduce some white as a contrast and I was thinking of the shift ****/boot what do you guys think? My inspiration comes from the attached pic of the speedster interior. Ive always love the classic shape of the 993 shift **** so my other question is does anybody have any insight as to whether or not I can fit a marble grey(almost white) 993 boot over the 996 boot retaining frame?
My current interior
Inspiration for my interior mod
Reni, I think the "inspirational" look is pretty cool. I question a white stick just because it wont age well with the dirt it will collect. No suggestions as to what color to consider.
Keep us posted and go for it! We are all looking for ideas. I know I am!
Add/Edit: Maybe a silver CAE shifter in its place. Would give it a retro/modern "Singer" look. Maybe you could get a shifter **** that matches the upholstery in some way. Just thinking out loud. By the way, welcome to the club!
Thanks, Im kinda hellbent on the white leather and Im kind of a neat freak so Im not to worried about it looking dirty.
Kinda like this.
The other idea that crossed my mind was a black 997 **** with a white leather boot
Reni - Take the leather one you have off, take it to an upholstery shop for the pattern to replicate, select the leather and have them make one for you. $100? $150? Ok. You’ll get exactly what you want. I like the white with black topper and the pepita inserts. That’d look wicked.
Has anyone installed pieces from this UK eBay seller JF Customs? They have 444k reviews that are 99% positive. There has got to be someone on RennList who has made a purchase:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/23350525020...wAAOSw7a9eU96G
I just installed the new shift **** and JF Customs boot last night. Super happy with the new look. The boot quality seems to be very good, prompt shipping and a very responsive seller. I dont think you can beat the boot especially for the price.
Thanks Bbiela, I went to their eBay site and they have leather boots for the early boxsters that have the **** like the 993. Im going to see if theyll do one in white for me!
These seats, they look awesome, Are these the PLM seats:
https://privatelabelmfg.com/collecti...ir-black-cloth
How do you like them? Are you using the Planted brackets & sliders?
I love the seats, they fit like a glove and really make you feel connected to the car, great replica seat. The ones in the link are fibre reinforced plastic shells and mine are carbon fibre withe nomex fabric, they were in the car when I purchased it. PO said he ordered them from Europe.
This is best pic I have of the rails, you can also see the carbon fibre better.
Amazon. Where else? 🤣🤣🤣. I tried to get their order number but is now unavailable. I searched for an Orange USB charger. If I was ordering now I would try to find one that is PD compatible for faster charging.
For anyone that wrapped interior parts in leather - like the lower center console, a few questions:
- Did you do it yourself or have it done?
- Did you buy a kit, or just start with a sheet of leather?
- What kind of adhesive did you use?
- Any tips or advice or how-to for the job?
I was finally able to track down a leather Graphite Gray 3-spoke wheel for my Carrera. These things are basically unobtainium because, A) Only available with full leather interior option or on the Turbo AFAIK (but pretty sure most of the non-Turbo wheels were still plastic finish), b) Early cars had full leather 4-spokes which I already had, C) Most people don't seem to take off their steering wheels our of their Turbos for AM, D) Vast majority of Turbos have black interior, E) On wrecks, usually the airbag has gone off and wrecked the wheel.
So, after 3+ years of searching, I finally had a member contact me and send me one at a reasonable price. Once it's installed I'll post some pictures of the interior.
-Matt
So ended up getting Cobra Misanos from Tom. Had leather touched up locally and will properly install when Tom gets me instructions on how to install the submarine belt support. Decided to keep the Red dash and am leaning toward going back to red door cards but changing the lower door carpet to black. I dyed the rearmost faded black carpet to black and it's not a perfect match but between the window tint and the roll cage, no one can tell. Door cards are going to have to match better. Any suggestions on dying door card carpeting without dying the Red leather?
Still undecided on A.B & C pillar trim--leaning toward black.
Interior still partially disassembled.
I really like what you did with the door handle and sill. How did you improve the door pull handles and door sill? Did you buy stock black components, or did you dye the leather?

^^^^That steering wheel is epic! Def picks up the boot cover. “Kid, do NOT touch that wheel!” Do you have matching suede or alcantara driving gloves yet? Would take that whole package to 11.
I need to redo the boot, its Alcantara and the only driving gloves I have are AlpineStars which are kinda plain. Hopefully I can get a Racetech this year and have Rod work his magic.
I have a complete set of Alcantara interior pieces available, if interested. Includes the center console side pieces, storage compartment lid and horseshoe surround. Plus, I have an Alcantara instrument console. When I finally got a set of sport seats, I removed all these pieces and returned the interior to being all Boxster Red instead of being two toned. You can see the pieces in this photo:
Thought I toss in a pic of the changeover back to Boxster Red. The only thing I didn't change was the black leather steering wheel because the red one dirties up so easily.
Those are nice pieces. Im probably going to do the console cover because I have a factory carbon interior thats in good condition Itd be a shame to remove those components.

Added Rennline 4pc pedals and got the PCCM+ all buttoned up. GPS and mic all wired to factory locations and invisible.
Thinking of fabricating a heel pad for the factory mats out of brushed aluminum. Couldn't find anything I like on-line and don't want to go the full track aluminum mat route.
Yes, but since it's not compatible with PCCM+ I just took it out and routed the new one in. You need to remove the tiny screw from the housing of the mic that comes with PCCM+ and then it can be easily removed. It's a bit more work but I hate seeing it tacked on to the top of the steering column when there is a spot for it in the gauge cluster.
Pete, looks great. I did the rennline pedals a long time ago and they have been durable and very worthwhile as an upgrade. I also did the black aluminum track mats. I really like them. Very easy to remove and clean, very durable and easier to use the pedals fast. You never get stuck on the carpet.
Yeah I thought about those track mats but not feeling it 100%. I'm after a hybrid solution of aluminum and carpet and have an idea for a custom solution I might make. It's my only car and it will fit my needs a bit better.
Where did you put the PCCM+ USB box? Glovebox? I want to install PCCM+ and put the usb box in the glovebox, but have heard the cord is very short. not sure if it's too short to be able to do that?
thanks, looks great!
Thank you. The cord is definitely too short but you could certainly cut and extend the wiring. It's pretty easy to do and you can heat shrink wrap it to keep it clean. I hid my USB box behind the center console on the passenger side. From there I have a USB cable running to connect my phone.
I saw you did this conversion. I have 997 turbo seats that I want to install in my 996 but don't have the wiring diagrams to do this. Do you have them? Can you share or send me in the right direction?
Nick
I think tint is basically a consumable since it tends to wear and mine had a nick or two in it. I couldn't see it from the outside unless I looked but from the inside it was subpar. And that's what matters to the driver /owner/ me when I get in the car. Now that the scratches on the center stack and soft touch console are resolved it is time to deal with the glass . I have no idea how old the tint was. Reasonable installation and it wasn't bubbling. Still, decided to pull it.
Yogi: Drive by pulling the cables that were attached to the shifter. 😎
Actually Im putting a 997 shifter in its place.......
Boy, Yogi, I'll bet that makes your spoiler rise.......
Hey, Kota, I don't know for sure but I get the feeling it might have been quite old although it wasn't bubbling or failing other than the Knicks and scratches. My feeling was that if I couldn't get it off I would have it done. You should go for it.
Two simple and inexpensive upgrades I’ve done to break up the too-tan interior. I love the subtle changes!
Before…
After…
Before…beige console, ashtray, shifter and parking brake
After…black accents and Rennline shift ****.
Hi, nice. Which trim rings are those and are you satisfied? We have them on the Boxster S and I want them on the 996, but saw a few sets that I wasn't a fan of the quality, finish, etc. Thx.
Very pleased with the trim rings, they are bevel cut to nest just right and they are of very good quality. This is the second car I’ve put these in…brushed aluminum the first time and polished this time. Found them on eBay from Dido Tuning. They ship from Poland I believe. I love them.
Great thread, I love interior modifications
Latest update from my car
Modifications I've done so far:
997 Hard back seats
Porsche classic steering wheel
OEM Carbon horse shoe
OEM Carbon handbrake
OEM Red seat belts
Alcantara covered armrest
Rennline Carbon door pulls
PCCM+
DT alu cluster rings
996 GT3 shift **** with the trim ring
Renndition Cup holder and center cubby
Very nicely and tastefully done. I"m not generally a fan of black interiors on the 996, but you've made it one of the best-looking 996 interiors I've seen!

One of my biggest pet peeves with my 996 cab is those painted frunk, and engine-painted silver release handles that seem to get a fair amount of abuse just from climbing in and out. After trying various paints and coatings, while I matched it somewhat successfully, it got scratched again, and those scratch marks seemed embedded into the paint surface once again. So, having secured another set, I removed the coatings down to just the metal, sanded them smooth....they are rather rough castings under the paint, and polished them instead of re-painting. I still have a final polish before adding the appropriate decals, they may be pot metal or aluminum, but at least the metal withstands a lot more of the abuse. Next up, I will remove the soft coatings on the plastic pieces and have them wrapped in black leather.
Question for those that have replaced their center consoles, are the center consoles the same between all trim models of 996? i.e will a center console from a 996 Turbo S fit in a C4, or a C4S? Any differences between Tip/Manual?
I posted this in my build thread but currently waiting for the Sparco script to be embroidered. This particular seat was one of the first Evo XL Carbons sold early this year. They sent to to Rod at Classic 9 to reupholster in something similar to Sparcos Evo premium line. Rod is covering it in leather and suede with red sticking to match the Cup wheel. For now Im only doing one seat. These will be added to a BBI base, should ship when I get off deployment in March.
I know this is a fairly old thread (hard to believe 2019 was 5 years ago), but where did you get the rear carpet cover for the rear seats? i like that.
It was from Lloyd Mats and is called a 'deck mat'. I heard that Lloyd lost their licensing from Porsche and can no longer do logos on anything.
I've since replaced it with a Coco Mat to match everything else.
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
