Not familiar with the 996 but I had a similar problem on my E Class Merc and it turned out to be a thin rubber seal wasn't glued down properly so at speed it was being sucked out of position causing the noise.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I get quite a lot of wind noise and buffeting around my drivers side wing mirror at speeds above 50mph. The amont of noise is far greater on the drivers side than on the passenger side leading me to believe some seal or something may be missing. There is no sensation of the air coming into the car though.
I've looked at both sides and can't see anything obvious. Any clues to what may be causing it?
Cheers

Taz, check the door seals/rubbers. Make sure they are attached correctly. Not familiar with the 996 but I had a similar problem on my E Class Merc and it turned out to be a thin rubber seal wasn't glued down properly so at speed it was being sucked out of position causing the noise.
Also worth checking the alignment of the door relative to the frame. It may need pulling in slighltly - adjustment of the door striker will fix that.
Top man Asim, cheers.
I'll check it out when i get chance tonight. Door allignment looks to be ok to the naked eye and there is no clonking or knocking when it is opened/shut. But will investigate this also.
I think the door seals on my Leon are gone too! Getting water in the rear driver's side footwell...grrrrrr.
Taran
Could be, but it's rare unless the seal is damaged or really badly fitted. In my experience most VAG cars leak into the footwell due to damaged door membrane, behind the door card. Worth checking out.
Has the car got a sunroof? If so it may be sunroof drain tubes blocked.
Yeh, actually your right, that's quite a common prob, especially with the Mk4 platform. No Sunroof. I had a similar prob when the car was new, fixed under warranty. Trying to recall, but i'm sure they said it was some filter at the time?...hmmm.
Looks like a job for the wkend!

Guys, i think the windnoise i'm experiencing is coming from the seals to the front windscreen at the base of the A-pillar. I taped up the area i thought the noise was coming from and took the car for a spin, but the noise was still there.
It's loose and can be picked out up to about half way up the pillar. Do you reckon this could be the cause of the noise?
Also, does a special type of sealant have to be used?
Cheers
