Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

One week into Porsche ownership (2000 model Carrera 2 with 37K on the clock) and first noticed a sort of whining noise that increases with road speed (not engine revs)...it seems to come from under the middle of the rear seats, and isnt super loud, but something you notice when you have a new car and are listening to lots of new things. Also when i get out of the car there is a hot/burning rubber smell. Its more noticeable if you put your nose into the right rear wheel area. Opening the engine lid, it doesnt really smell there. I realise this is a bit vague, but anyone else come across this ? many thanks

POST 2Original post

Bearings? Mine did something like that, made a noise which was dependant on road speed not engine speed. Porsche tech guy thought it was wheel bearings but turned out to be gearbox bearings, had them all replaced under warranty, my car had done 70k though. Didn't have burning smell. Is there something rubbing on inside of wheel?, stupid question but would make sense for smell and speed related noise...

POST 3Original post

I also have the burning rubber smell. Just put it down to exhaust being close to tyres and spirited driving ??? Steve

POST 5Original post

The smell means you have been driving it as intended... Good Man! The whine could be bearings, but don't worry - that will be warranty on a 37k car.

POST 6Original post

I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning!

POST 7Original post

Hi - Has the rear PU been painted recently, ie, before you bought the car? it could be heat from the exhaust// engine exaggerating the smell of new paint. Don't be over concerned about front or rear PU painting either as many cars have had this done at one time or another as they become tatty due to stone chips etc. - Simon
