POST 1Original post

Hi guys. My Cayman ’s (2.9 engine) mileage is 35,000 miles. I use Mobil1 0W-20 oil. However, this oil is essentially colored water, extremely thin, and liquid. The dealers advise using 0W-20 (which I consider to be “ecology crap”). My question is, what oil thickness would be safer to use in my 9A1? Is it possible to use 5W-30 engine oil? I don’t trust modern oils because it’s just a business move, not a personal attack.

POST 2Original post

I use Mobil 1 Euro formula but it’s 0-40. If you look on the Porsche approved oil list It will give you a myriad of choices.

POST 3Original post

Something stinks here. I don't believe a Porsche dealer ever recommended any oil less than 0W-40. Here's the manual page: Here is the list of all A40 approved oil, there's not a single oil less than 40 weight. BTW, you stated you had a 981 Cayman in October. Did you get a new car?

POST 4Original post

Exactly @RSchwerer - I don't know why the OP is using 5-20, but that's way too thin for the recommendations on this engine. What's more, M1 tends to be on the thinner side versus other brands, so I'd jump to 5-30 in a heartbeat... but you should stick to what's recommended, which is a 40-weight. Who told you to use 5-20? If you are doing UOAs, I would love to see what you're getting from the 5-20... I love data, after all!

POST 5Original post

This is a new scammer account. They lifted the post from a 6 year old discussion elsewhere. The Nigerians dont know the difference between an imaginary 987 or 981 car I'm also seeing lots of brand new accounts created almost daily it seems within an hour of each other, and it just so happens they all magically find the new member into thead at the same time, and start saying welcome to himself, sorry, I meant "themselves"

POST 6Original post

Scammer account? What is to be gained here asking about oil? I got the red flag when he called it ‘ecology crap’, thinking, what has that got to do with manufacturer oil recommendation.

POST 7Original post

It has zero to do with the actual post or topic. Its a huge NIgerian scam center ring that has been targeting ANY forum that has classifieds for years now, and its just a way to look like a legit member and gain access to PM privileges. Its the exact same guys that run all the Nigerian Prince, Lottery and romance scams. This is what they do for a living, and there is a never ending supply of foolish victims that make them keep coming back. They dont know anything about the forums they are scamming, so this is why they can get tripped up and exposed with mistakes in their post that are obvious to legit members, just like this example. They look for any WTB ad, then swoop in by PM and claim to have a "friend" that just so happens to have exactly what the member wants. There is no friend, its just a fake email to get them communicating outside of the forum where they convince them to send them money for something they never had, or even really know about based only on a lifted image from the net. Most create multiple accounts at a time under different names, so they just switch to another as soon as one gets banned. Notice this member has only a few post, and almost all of these scam/spam accounts are from brand new accounts. They have adapted now, and dont even need PM access any longer because many members foolishly post their email and phone numbers on the internet. In this case you will never see them. They simply watch for someone to post "I'll take it", and then Google search both parties username to see if they have ever posted email/phone anywhere on the net, and they almost always do. Then they use that info to reach out to the buyer posing as the seller and give them their PP address instead, even spoofing the numbers to look like the legit seller. All phone numbers/emails they communicate from are fake and not really where they claim to be coming from The buyer then thinks he is getting scammed by the legit seller when the item never ships, and the seller claims the buyer is a scammer because they never sent them any money, when in fact they both are getting scammed by an unknown 3rd party they didn't even know was there. Many aren't smart enough to stop and wonder "how did this person contacting me get my personal contact info since I never gave it to them?" It takes literally 15 seconds to find such info about someone. NEVER post emails or phone numbers on the Internet! People seem to foolishly think that only other members are reading these post

POST 8Original post

Great, I can hardly wait till AI is more capable in fooling all of us old people, hooray for technology.

POST 9Original post

Nice. Thanks for letting me know. Like others, I wasn't sure why an oil question would be an issue, but so be it... good catch. Maybe the forums should start using AI detectors to flag these as "potential AI" or something. Of course, then it becomes a cat/mouse game on which one is better...

POST 10Original post

Our Ai is the members. Thanks for spotting this. I'll ban him in a day or so, meanwhile I'll silence him, and make him a miserable user... (a secret setting only available to admins..) The reason I didn't delete him or ban him is if I did - all his posts will go away - as will this thread, and I think the thread evolved to something useful - discussion on scammers and how they work and how to spot them. I'll admit to being taken by one.. cost me $125, but that was a cheap lesson IMHO. If you do spot scammer posts, or ones you think have an odor to them, please use the REPORT button to let us know. The mods/admin can't read every thread on the forum (although we do try..) so member help is really appreciated. Off to do some mischief...

POST 11Original post

It's alway the classifieds they are ultimately after, but one can avoid them using a few basic rules that I summarized from my post above. 1) Always look at the join date if contacted by PM. Did they join within hours or days just to reach out to you for a new WTB classified ad? Look at their post count. Are they all simple few word replies or no post at all? This is a big red flag if so. Most people aren't just cruising around in random forums classified ads. They are actively being monitored 24/7 by these guys, and then they suddenly join when they see an easy target. Many sites allow full PM privileges immediately after joining, and this is what they hope for. 2) Never agree to start communicating outside of the forum, as they will try to direct you to text or email so they are no longer seen by any Moderators, and NEVER agree to pay anyone using PayPal Friends and Family, or any sort of Zelle or Cash App, as this is what they will require. Even if you are tricked to this point, insisting on using a secure form of payment that protects you will shut them down and they will typically stop responding. Even if you do manage to fall for it and pay, they will typically come back and claim that something was wrong with their PP account, and try and get you pay again in their "wife's" account. You would not believe how many people actually fall for this and scam themselves not once, but twice! This inability to see huge red flags is why they will never go away. 3) Never communicate with anyone that claims to "have a friend" that just happens to have what you want in your WTB ad. Again, massive red flag. Why would some random person that didnt even have a Porsche be looking through P car forum classifieds just in case he saw someone asking for something his friend with a P car might have? And who would join a forum that didn't even involve them just to PM someone about contacting his friend? Its completely absurd, but this is one of the most successful scams that has been going on for years. 4) Never post your email or phone number! You wouldn't place this info on a billboard along the highway where you live, but people dont think twice about placing it on the net for BILLIONS to see! You are handing the scammers everything they need to impersonate you if they see you involved in any classified ad. Stop If someone contacts you with their PP info for payment by email or text! Did you provide this info to them? If not, then how would they be contacting you that way? You can Google your email and phone number, and many times find places where you have publicly posted this in the past. Delete them if you can. There are also web crawlers that gather this info 24/7 from the net by the billions to compile mas text/email spam/scam databases, and you just gave them all your contact info You can also highlight a post and Rt click for a Google search option of the post if suspicious about any new member, and this is exactly how I found the source of this scammers copy/paste reply stolen from elsewhere. This is the only way they can post any technical info that looks legit since they know nothing about the 100 forums they are scamming all at once. They are lazy, and many times the post they copied is literally within the same discussion they are posting in, so take a quick look rather than reading only the last post. Stay safe guys!

POST 12Original post

Many Cayman owners (especially in warmer climates) prefer switching to 5w30 engine oil for better high-temp protection. Mobil1 5W-30 is a solid option, or you could go with something like Liqui Moly or Motul if you want a high-quality synthetic.

POST 14Original post

Makes zero sense unless you're driving in a blast furnace. The "climate" should only affect starting the engine. So you want thinner oil (0W) for starting in cold weather. Once it reaches operating temps, the engine temp should stabilize and any difference in ambient (air) temp would be trivial, regardless of whether it is 20F or 120F ambient. The internal oil temp will always be much warmer.

POST 15Original post

ICNU that is excellent information! Wait, romance scams too!? DANG! For those that clicked-on to view a viscosity discussion.... I run SAE OW-40. Recently, (last week) I was in a highly rated racing/repair shop for a pre-track inspection and they recommended I change to 5W50 for warmer temperatures.

POST 16Original post

And that is a valid factory approved weight for use for a temperature range over -13F

POST 17Original post

Don't waste your time. Post #12 is just another one of many scam account names belonging to the OP coming to try and rescue the discussion since the Mods banned him from posting further on the other account. The account was created 6 months ago, similar to the OP, and only one post on day one, but then somehow magically finds this very specific discussion 6 months later? And its clearly an AI generated response. When it reads like a Google search reply or commercial, it typically is. Its not natural and the way most people talk. The discussion they started when creating the Groundhogy account 6 months ago was also lifted directly from another forum from a discussion 14 years ago shown in the image below. Here is their one and only post until today : https://www.planet-9.com/threads/impact-wrench-recommendations.256519/?post_id=2234678#post-2234678 Just another perfect example of how these scammers operate. One account gets shut down, and they already have another ready to go. This entire discussion is a fraud, so dont put any real effort into replying to anyone that you dont recognize. The new accounts with zero or low post are always suspect until proven otherwise. Its sad, but this is where we find ourselves these days.

POST 19Original post

I used to put Mobil1 in mines but i’ve been using Motul oil since 2018 and never turn back. I can feel a big difference. Anyone else use Motul ?

POST 20Original post

I only use (A40) 5W 40. For colder regions 0W 40 would be ideal I think.

POST 21Original post

San Diego here (08 Bxtr, Base W/Tip), dealership puts 0W-40. I find it odd, we have such warm climate here. Never freezes or snows in SoCal. I will start to DIY oil changes since this Porsche has had 100% of the dealers tech recommeded services, at 65K now. I feel like 5W-40 oil might be best for this climate like SG007 mentioned. Gonna stick to mobile 1 because I think its responsible for my Range Rover Sport pushing near 160K, zero problems ALL maintainence followed up to 120K at dealership, then started DIY 6 month oil changes regardless of miles (4-5K a year). I have had my Boxster 1 year this month, both oil changes in that 1 year have been done at the dealership because I was catching up on all services, this car also gets 4-5K a year -as I daily it, except for very few rain days. Mostly because of other drivers bad skills driving in the rain.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
