I've got a 2011
Cayman
Base and I'm looking to for a nice street setup with a mild (0.75" to 1") drop. I'm not looking for something significantly firmer/harder as I'd like to maintain ride quality as I drive the car way more than my other car (2016
BMW
M235). I'm not interested in a coilover setup as I don't need the adjustability or the firmness of a more track focused setup. I was set on the full
Cayman
R spring and strut setup, but wow is it expensive. It's $2500 for the springs and shocks. Since I want to do it the right way, I'm doing new mounts and the other typical expendables. All in, doing the
Cayman
R setup will cost me well over $3K all in. I have the money, but that is still hard to swallow. I then came across various threads where people have done
Cayman R springs
with the shorter body
Bilstein
B8 shocks which are apparently designed for lowered cars. Others have done the standard length body B6 shocks and the biggest issue with that is that the rear spring becomes a bit loose once the suspension is at full drop. It seems like the shorter B8s shock bodies may be the best option for a drop. It would be $1,000 cheaper to do the
Cayman
R spring and B8 setup all in.
I have a few questions for those running the
Cayman
R spring and B8 setup
1) How is the ride quality? Is it significantly firmer than the standard OEM non-
PASM
setup?
2) Any clunks or rattles from the shocks? I had a set of
Bilstein B6
Damptronics on the front axle of my M235 and they were a bit clunky over certain road surfaces. Oddly, the
Bilstein B6
Damptronics on the rear axle are quiet.
FCP
took back the front
Bilsteins
no questions asked.
3) I believe the B8 shocks have internal bump stops thus no need to run OEM bump stops. Is that correct?
4) I'm also struggling with which thickness spring pad/spacer to run front and back. 6mm or 3mm? Or just keep what's already there? My 2011 Base with the standard suspension (non-
PASM
) is running 6mm in the front. There rear appears to have the 3mm based on what little of the spring centering ring (that's the real name of the part) that I can see. Part searches show that the 3mm rear spacer is white plastic and the 6mm one is black. Mine is definitely white.
5) Any other opinions regarding the the setup?
Thanks.
Correct.. Both B6/B8 are inverted shocks and have internal bump stops.
I went with 6mm front and 3mm rear.. Previously when I had the B12 kit I had stacked 6+3 in front but it was still too low.
I’ve paired the Cayman R springs with Koni shocks and I‘m very happy with it from a ride comfort standpoint. If you’re looking for softer damping you can also pair R springs with B4 shocks. Yes, they become loose at full droop but that’s not an issue unless you lift the car. I’ve ridden in a fellow local owners car with B4+R springs and that‘s what finally convinced me to ditch the B12 kit.

There is a pretty long thread for B8+Cayman R springs on CaymanOC forum too.
I am enjoying my
R springs
with Kini red shocks.
Only 800 miles in.
Once it is aligned with the new springs the slop when jacked or on a lift is solved.
I still used stainless steel tie wraps just to be safe.
