Hi guys! I'm looking at buying my first Porache, a
2007 Cayman
with the 2.7. The seller sent me a video that includes a cold start with revs, but when the engine is revved it looks like there is some light colored smoke followed by black smoke. I know some of this is expected with the
Cayman
, but does anything in this video set off alarm bells? Looking for opinions from those more experienced than me. Thanks!
My 2008
Cayman
2.7 so rarely smokes I can say it doesn't. On a couple very rare occasions over the past 15 years it did smoke at startup for only a few seconds and I suspect it was because the previous start was a very short run while I was moving cars around. The 2.7 doesn't seem to suffer many of the S issues and mine after 67,000 miles has been bullet proof. Perhaps this one hasn't been run very much lately and/or only run very briefly. I would still have an independent
Porsche
specialist shop do a pre purchase inspection regardless of smoke. The few hundred dollar cost is well worth it for piece of mind. Good luck.
Thank you for your input. I know the car has been doing a fair amount of sitting, they've only put on less than 1k miles over the past year and a half. I'm looking to get a ppi done, but the car being on the other side of the country makes it a little tricky.
A flat boxer engine puffs smoke at start up, it’s inherent in the design. The smoke can be more pronounced if it has sat say over a winter. It catches us off guard because we are used to engines from other manufacturers that only show smoke in cold weather and that’s not really smoke. Anyhow, once it’s up to temperature it should run clean. If the
AOS
is going? It will be readily apparent, the smoke will be consistent and pronounced, you won’t miss it.
2
caymans
and a
911
later, theres nothing to see there. When they sit for more than a couple of weeks, there‘s way more smoke than that. The best thing about most Porsches up until 2016 is they do not have the supercar crap reliability you see w others. I only stop at 2016 where my experience ends.
My 987 2.7 never smokes upon cold start and the one time it did, I replaced the
aos
immediately and it stopped smoking immediately.
The white smoke was probably moisture in the
exhaust
. The black smoke to me indicated a rich mixture, which you'll have when you cold start an engine. What wasn't good was the revving.. that's not good for the engine when cold. Take off and drive it normally.
When it goes for the PPI - mention your concern to the mechanic looking at it. See what they think since they'll see it first-hand.
