Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Discussions that suspect a cause
1

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suspected cause

Without hearing it, I'd say more likely the polyrib belt.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys Thank god we`re back on line and great new site by the way ! On to my problem. On start up from cold, as soon as the engine fires, I have a high pitched squeal, for a second, sounding somewhat like a fan belt squeal ?? Someone said it could be the starter motor ? Any ideas ? Steve

POST 2Original post

I suspect it could either be the, er, starter motor, or the polyrib belt. Without hearing it, I'd say more likely the polyrib belt. Get it checked out as you don't want that to break as it will leave you stranded...

POST 3Original post

If it has been raining heavily my car will sometime squeal on start up and it sounds like a belt is slipping. The other thing that happens is that the low voltage warning comes on. A couple of blips on the throttle always sorts it out although it can be a tad

POST 4Original post

:food: Hi I think you are right its either belt(s) or starter motor. Either way I believe you should try to get it resolved. If the belt is slipping then clearly its not doing the belt any good. It may just need tightening. And if the belt fails thats a major inconvenience If it is the starter motor, then the pinion that flies into the toothed ring gear on the flywheel is staying engaged, which "bu**ers" the Pinion, Starter Motor Bearings and the Ring Gear on the Flywheel. To help you define the noises the belt is a "squeal" while the starter motor will be a "metallic screech". Hopefully this poor use of the English language may get you closer in the absence of being able to hear it. Regards Big Bob
