The AOS is brand new and I replaced it after I corrected the overfill

But I'll clean the MAF tomorrow and update about that.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

But even if we take our P-cars out of the equation, it's the little stuff of everyday life (clean water, fresh food, caring friends and family members) that I just hope I never take for granted.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a
2007 Cayman S
with 80k miles on it. Accidentally overfilled the oil when I changed it last and didn't realize it for a couple of days because one morning it just poured out smoke when I started it up and it drove pretty poorly. I drained the oil to get it down to the proper level, replaced the
spark plugs
, and the
AOS
.
Fast forward to a week later now, I have hesitation at low RPM's still, sometimes it doesn't want to rev when I try to rev match when down shifting, and will even give a weird hesitation when I upshift.
Any help would be appreciated, I just want to have the car back to driving normal. I'm hoping no permanent damage occured. I'm not sure which direction to go from here.
I'll check that out and clean it off. I cleaned out the plenum and the throttle body and got gunk out of there.
What might cause the car to still smoke on cold starts? Since I got a new
AOS
in it I thought that would stop.
My apologies if you’re a real guy, if you are post a photo of your car, that will win you a lot more credibility. As for your question overfilling the oil may also have a detrimental effect on the
AOS
causing more smoke than usual. Even a brand new
AOS
doesn’t like overfilling.
Oh, yeah I joined this forum today to talk about this issue I'm having. No worries. Thanks for the heads up, I'll add a photo soon
The AOS is brand new and I replaced it after I corrected the overfill
Well overfilling is not all going to be corrected by a new
AOS
alone, that’s why you had “gunk” to clean. Oil dripped from the
exhaust
on my
986
when the
AOS
went bad. If the car is running correctly and not overheating, you might consider running it for a while to see what happens unless the smoke is so overwhelming that’s not a choice. Does the smoke reduce after the car is up to temperature and driven or is it consistently smoking heavy?
The smoke reduces when the car is up to temp. Basically disappears as far as I can tell. But on cold starts it still smokes heavy.
Also when it's up to temp the hesitation at low RPM is still present. But I'll clean the MAF tomorrow and update about that. Screw
Porsche
for putting security torx bolts on the MAF hahaha
Could it be that time/miles are needed to clear up the junk from the bad
AOS
and overfill? I borescoped the cylinders when I did my plugs and I saw a lot of black junk on top of the cylinder heads. Seemed to be fresh (wet) oil/carbon
Could injector cleaner help with that?
I would recommend driving it for several long runs. You want to get the engine fully up to temp. And make sure you get to higher rpm’s for a while. There will be residual oil in the various breather tubes and other places. The higher temps will thin the oil while also helping to move things thru.
Some fuel additive with PEA might also help.
Gotcha. I have to go out of town for some jobs soon so that'll really help then. Reassuring to know that it might just be extra junk that needs to be worked out. I'll update here as the days pass if anything changes
Not sure if we decided if OP was spam or not, but here's an answer to the question -
An oil over-fill (similarly to an
AOS
failure) will leave a film of oil residue in the intake for a long time unless the intake manifold, TB, and
MAF sensor
are cleaned up. I would go ahead and clean those and you should see a continual decrease in startup smoke.
Foodbiker, I know exactly where you are! As I had more than couple of heavy (invasive..) surgeries, and between the pain killers and foggy brain, you'll find that participating on the car forums helps you out to clear your thoughts and pass the time quicker
, wishing you a fast recovery!
@Gilles
- Thanks so much for the good wishes! It's this kind of support that keeps me going when the pain is really rotten and downright scary. As this is a public forum, I'll keep the details vague here (hit me up via DM for details). Meanwhile, I'm really thankful for a lot...
I'm thankful for being able have the choice to have the surgery done, and was able to have it done. Although it was indeed major surgery where I now likely won't be doing any major car wrenching for the next six months, thankfully it wasn't a do-or-die situation. I don't wish surgery on anyone (I've even assisted on them during my former med school career), but it's awesome to be able to have it when one really needs it.
I'm thankful that a US federal job and associated health insurance helped pay for this insanely expensive surgery (and ideally all the follow-ups, plus tons of PT over the next year) and continue to help pay for living expenses too - and all that hasn't been carelessly eliminated (yet).
I'm thankful that I had access to one of the best hospitals in the USA, that's literally walking distance from where I live here in Boston.
I'm thankful I had easy access to both my winter Covid and Flu shots which were covered by health insurance, and that I was able to rest easily that I could have the surgery performed in the hospital without fear.
I'm thankful that when I'm healed, I'll be able to pop into my P-car and just drive -- especially with new plugs and coils in there (that's another story) just before the surgery.
On top of all this, I'm thankful that I have friends (both IRL and online) in my P9 community who have been checking in, and have been making really thoughtful comments like this and wish me well. Thanks, guys.

Thumbs up to all your
points
, and a special nod to your mention of being thankful for so many things we all take for granted in life. It’s these opportunities we are given that hopefully allow us all to give back in our own ways. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a strong return.
Many thanks,
@WTFChuck
- Really appreciate it. Ideally without a whole treatise, I often try to keep my P-car ownership in mind as to just how lucky I am. Now granted, my 987.2 is not a show car worth 100K like some other P-cars out there... and passerby may judgingly look at it like a rich-person's car. Meanwhile, many of us 98X guys know the secret of what a bargain our cars really are -- and one doesn't need to be wealthy do drive and own one. But even if we take our P-cars out of the equation, it's the little stuff of everyday life (clean water, fresh food, caring friends and family members) that I just hope I never take for granted.
Thanks for the help everyone. I went on a couple pretty long drives on the interstate after cleaning the MAF, TB, plenum, and intake piping, and things have super cleared up with the motor. Car's running fantastic now.
Great to hear things cleared up. When something occasionally runs rough, I do like to blast it out on the freeway with a spirited drive. MAF cleaning these days is easy.
Please go introduce yourself with a cool car photo in the new members section. We want to see your ride! Cheers.
I've deleted most of the threads related to a misunderstanding about a username (now changed) in an attempt to get the thread back on track. Glad to hear it's cleared up!
Take it to Porsche to fix. You dont know enough to fix this issue. If you keep driving the car you will destroy the engine. Immediately take some oil out of the dry sump. It will require significant repairs to fix.
As an X
Porsche
tech I have seen some of the more extreme results of this condition including shops that were uninitiated to this condition diagnosing engine lock up . In that case , once it settled and got to the dealer we were able to rotate the engine by hand , pull the plugs and spin it over , then clean the upper end of stand-off residual oil best possible , replace the oil separator clean the air box and replace the filter, remove the
exhaust
/ Cats , hang them up and run denatured alcohol through , blow them out and rinse and repeat . In these extreme instances you would still fog the neighborhood during initial road test but remarkably the Cats and
O2 sensors
would usually survive . If you wanted to go all the way you could remove the intake plenums and perform a more thorough cleaning . Hope this helps .
