I think you'll be able to do it, just as you can ride a horse or run a steam engine today but those are the preserve of people with the means, not the man in the street.

Suggestion

I have been hovering for circa 2 years as the result of having a car with which I have strong emotional involvement and limited opportunity to make use of, and which has held me back from making the slightly more practical option..!

The things that stop me are that if I want pure speed then I'll use the superbike (which in itself gets little use and have the odd similar thought about selling, and now the Isle of Mann TT is again cancelled will get even less  ).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey Guys, Hope you're all keeping well and staying safe. So glad I have my 996 to go for a spin in when I need to get out of the house. Okay, I have been made an offer for my Porka and I'm not sure whether I should sell or not sell? Will tell you guys what the offer is once I get a few responses. Firstly do you guys think these 996's will go up in valve in the next year or so? I have a 2003 996 C4S Tip Auto in Lapis Blue with 104K on the clock, it has Black Leather Interior with Porsche Crested Logo Wing Back Heated Seats, Guard Red Seatbelts, PCM2 Sat Nav, Target Blue Eye, Full Porsche Service History and Only 5 Previous Owners. What do you think I should get for it and if I should sell? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions.

POST 2Original post

Looks well, Only you can answer that question tho.. I reckon 996s and many other sports cars will flat line this year with everything going on, they will go up 2/5 years tho 👍

POST 3Original post

I have been saying for years that the purity and simplicity of the 996 shape will make it a design classic. Not sure when it will have its day though. Prices are rising. I think the C4S is one of the best looking modern Porsches, but to be a collectors car in the future it would need to be a manual for me. MC

POST 4Original post

I can't see it going up in value in the short term and the mileage will mean it will never be ultra collectable. It's a lovely looking car and I'm sure it's great fun to own and drive so it all depends on how much you enjoy owning and driving it or whether you'd rather cash in now. If you're tempted to sell there's several similar cars at dealers for c£20k so if you've got a bid of £18k I think you'd be doing well. Good Luck either way. :thumb:

POST 5Original post

Prices for classic/enthusiast cars have held up or gone up over the last 12 months presumably because some people have had more disposable income or readjusted priorities. I can't see it continuing. Plenty of other people have taken a financial hit and there's more to come, probably much more with further economic fallout and the need to repay the cost of Covid. Then there's the general movement towards electric and away from fossil. Whatever the strength of the argument for running an ICE I can't see it getting cheaper or easier over the next 10 years. I think you'll be able to do it, just as you can ride a horse or run a steam engine today but those are the preserve of people with the means, not the man in the street. As numbers fall it'll be interesting to see what happens to demand and prices. In other words I think now's a good time to sell short term (but I'd have said the same last year). I'm not confident about all these predictions of certain cars climbing. I think the market as a whole is going to stagnate. We'll see! As above I'd have thought £18k is a good offer, but only you can tell.

POST 7Original post

Seems Grifter and I think along similar lines re the economic situation now and yet to come, and if we might be in any way correct then it seems your economic situation is that which matters in relation to converting your 996 back into cash or not...? Assuming you are in a relatively financially confident position, I suspect it then comes down to a couple of factors. The first of which seems to interest you is the possible increase in value over some period of time. I don`t know for sure but it seems to me that Porsche buyers apply investment thinking to ALL Porsches which is no doubt built on the exponential market value increase in air cooled 911-993 Porsches, though I suspect the mechanical rep of the 996 and more the numbers built in comparison with air cooled, may ever limit their appeal as they age. Might be worth checking how many air cooled are advertised relative to 996`s on this site and beyond..? With that in mind I would perhaps cancel out thinking in terms of future investment value. Of course when it comes to GT2-3 it seems the investment thinking has been carried over..? My second line of thought is then perhaps related to your emotional involvement with your 996, that alongside what you think you might replace it with, and if non-Porsche or something more practical... Hmm..? I have been hovering for circa 2 years as the result of having a car with which I have strong emotional involvement and limited opportunity to make use of, and which has held me back from making the slightly more practical option..! I wish you the best of luck in your choices. BTW your 996 looks the business. :thumb:

POST 8Original post

As with others here, 18k sounds like a decent price based on spec and mileage. On the 'keep' it front then we all go through that dilemma. My car is not dissimilar to yours 2004, Tip, Black at 85k miles and in very nice condition. My mind sometimes wanders and I think whether I'd miss it and should i get something 'faster' such as a 997 Turbo for example or bank the money. The things that stop me are that if I want pure speed then I'll use the superbike (which in itself gets little use and have the odd similar thought about selling, and now the Isle of Mann TT is again cancelled will get even less  ). Secondly that I know/own the car for 7 years and still think the 996 C4S is as good as it gets looks wise (so quite attached to it) and thirdly i can't afford or justify trading up. Whilst these might not go up hugely I don't think they will lose any value. And of course every time i open the garage, get the rear view of the car and fire it up with the PSE barking, then I'm grinning from ear to ear and remember why i never take these sale thoughts further. Unless you need the money keep it and have something special when in 10 years non-electric cars will be a rarity

POST 9Original post

I think you're opening paragraph answers the question for you, you look forward to getting out to drive it, one of a limited number of thing we can enjoy at the moment. If you need the cash in the short-medium term then I'd wait until summer and hopefully an end to lockdown. I agree £18k is the right sort of level if you so sell. I don't see them increasing much in the next 5years, but they won't depreciate either. One positive from the economic situation is that low interest rates are more a less certain for the next 10years, so people's disposable income won't be eroded by increased repayments on existing debt. All 996s represent terrific value so I think the demand will remain. Edited to add: I'll wear the cost of using mine regularly while we still can. When they have to run on synthetic fuel at £3/l then it can become an occasional use car!

Ah Terry, you give up too easily. I've just taken up an old carpet and found some newspaper classifieds from 1998 - at these prices I'd be a fool not to phone them... And the newly launched Ford Focus is getting rave reviews!
