Thinking of swapping out my Boxster for a CR. Quite a few hanging about at the OPC's, spoilt for choice at the moment.

POST 6Original post

I would not say spoilt for choice, only 2 manual cars for sale with PSE , both black.

POST 8Original post

The new Boxster / Cayman section has only been around five minutes and there are already multiple excuses to post pictures - brilliant :-)

POST 9Original post

My daily is a CS Sport which is a great car although a little soft. Is there a big difference between this and a CR? (Apart from an LSD and an extra 30bhp?) I have seen a white manual CR, 2011, 11,000 miles, up for sale at c£40k for and am sorely tempted.

POST 10Original post

Sold my spyder a few weeks ago ,thinking I would buy something else in the spring. Looking already at a nice white R lovely car, pretty much good spec but pdk . Don't know what to think about it really. What s your thoughts?

Don't know what to think about it really. What s your thoughts? PDK - it's the future, rather like garlic bread. You can be lazy and leave it in auto or change gear manually (without the possibility of over-rev issues)- jusr make sure you get the wheel with paddles rather than buttons.

POST 12Original post

just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the Porsche Side Decals on the CR are a Gloss or Matt finish?

POST 13Original post

BubblesNW said: PDK - it's the future, rather like garlic bread. Get a manual now while they are still available is my advice :-). PDK is only getting better every gen takes about 4 attempts , I am sure they have learnt a lot of the new 991 PDK which should filter down to the 981 face lift. As most say 987.2 buy a manual 981 buy PDK the issue there is e 981 has v1 electric steering which sucks.

POST 15Original post

so i don't really get this but why is the the Cayman R better than a new 981 Cayman S with buckets and the sport chassis? Obviously 1 is cheaper than the other? The 981 benefits from improvements but has electric steering. To me, unless you love the limited model nature or the looks of the 987, it would seem like the newer cayman is the better buy. And i had a cr before so i know how good it is, I am just not sure a new CS with the right options is any worse.

I'd like to try one though, and would consider it a replacement for my Spyder with a few well chosen options (like upholders).

CR is one of the best cars I have owned for a road car. the steering and 911 looks of the 981 is a non starter for me and the main factor to not owning one. I also love the 987.2 looks and you can tell it's a Cayman, the 981 looks bland, it's lost the nice rear haunches and the front is pure 911. the new car is also under powered and imo you may as well buy a basic 991, get the +2 and a real 350BHp, why own a Cayman over a basic 991 ? Edited by mrdemon on Thursday 7th November 21:19 My new 981 Cayman was £30K less than a basic 991. Bit of a difference, wouldn't you agree?

POST 23Original post

Typical MrDemon. (1) A fully-specced up 981 Cayman S comes close-ish in price to a basic 911. Of course it does - it is some ways a better car and in some ways still inferior, so it is about the same price. Given that ALL Cayman owners like to stress that the Cayman is different from, rather than inferior to, the 911, it makes sense that people might choose an expensive Cayman over a cheap 911 (which means a similar price for each). I would not feel at all uncomfortable spending the same on an extremely specced up Cayman S (or, please please please, a new Cayman R/RS/GT/whatever they call it) as I would spend on a very basic 911. Different cars. (2) A 981 Cayman (even with decent spec) is still far cheaper than a basic 911. Of course it is - it has a far smaller (and cheaper, I would have thought) engine and is a much smaller car. It is also towards the Porsche "budget" end of the spectrum...all things being relative.

POST 37Original post

That cage looks very good but a quick google search reveals that the company can be an arse to deal with which is a shame. One of the few cages I've seen that dont require any sort of butchery of interior trim.

POST 38Original post

Andy Fagan - whose car is pictured in post #1 has just installed one in his car. It just bolted in I think with no butchery needed. Not sure what he used. He can easily be found on the Spyder thread on PCGB forum or PM me if needs be and I can put you in touch.

anonymous said: [redacted] I think I read somewhere in the last couple of years that a 997 turbo cost about £6k more to produce than a boxster. Not sure if that's complete cost including R&d etc or just manufacturing, but the mark up on a 911 is pretty amazing. Kind of try across the industry though, big cars don't fundamentally cost proportionally more than small cars to make.

POST 41Original post

Porsche makes £13k per car sold if you look at total profit vs car sales so they say. A lot of that money coming in must be servicing costs. but the books look OK in the Porsche camp it seems.

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I can't believe that the 911 costs much more to build than a Cayman. If correct, would that make the Cayman better value ? I think that one of the best things about Porsche is that their entry level cars are so exceptionally good --- and no problems reported yet with the gen II engines

csmith319 said: SO much better looking than the 981!!! this 100% I don't get every one swooning over the new Cayman, it's way to 911 now. 987.2 is a great looking sports car.

POST 50Original post

Once the 987.2 gets oldish (say in about 5 years), I expect the R to hold its value very well compared to 2.7 and S versions. It is inherently more "special" and likely to maintain a bit of a following.

POST 51Original post

already holds it's value and has a massive following. more R's than GT3 on track days I go to and the R keeps getting fastest laps at the Porsche club GB sprint champs. over cars with 100bhp more. It's the perfect sports car for road use which can take a track day no problem. Very under rated car even though it won drivers car of the year at launch and people slagged it for not being a GT3!!! which imo is a good job, a GT3 Cayman would ruin it for the road. No new Porsche steers as well, and in manual form you can have your cake and eat it with this car. one word "stunning"

POST 52Original post

I'd have a Cayman R over the 981, I think it looks just about perfect. The 981 is nice looking but has lost some of the 987's character, much like the new Cayenne compared to the original, the new designs are 'safer'. I was following a white Cayman R on the M3 on Saturday morning, anyone on here notice a GT2 behind you? The Cayman looked awesome, really made me miss my old cars

in the UK about 230/250 odd but never more than a few for sale at 1 time, never see a 2nd hand red one as an example. And only 4 black Manual cars for sale at the OPC, Black seems a very bad seller.

POST 56Original post

Mrdemon interesting what you say about black. I was advised against buying a white Cayman as the colour has been very popular over all car manufacturers, over supply etc. The black CR looks mean although I do like the look of the white CRs (at the moment!). Time will tell I guess.

POST 57Original post

I take it they did not have any white cars for sale lol. White looks great on the R. some cars imo look wrong in white Astons, Ferrari, Merc's all don't look great in white imo. Audi and Porsche always look great in white.

POST 58Original post

It was a little independent dealer that said that to me and I wasn't actually looking to buy at the time. They just mentioned that the white Cayman etc were difficult to sell relative to red, black. Perhaps they were just unlucky with previous sales. I think the only colour I don't like is the green! I wouldn't go for the red either but I think it still looks good with black wheels!

TackMEU said: they are both terrific drivers cars and the CR is a great, but perhaps flawed car. What do you think is flawed on the R ? just interested in peoples views as I don't hear a bad thing about it any where. As for 981 vs 987 it's starting to make no odds as the R is so expensive you can buy a 981 Boxster for less money already, so it's not about costs or what people own/afford either. Owners like me could have a newer car for less money but choose to stay with the older car because it drives and looks better. (ofcourse the looks thing is personal) and I do have my name down on a Cayman GT4 but it needs to be bloody good :-) ie have a 3.8 engine and 6 pots as standard. I think Porsche got the R spot on even though people wanted it more hardcore, imo that would have ruined it.

POST 64Original post

i would be interested in the gt4 but i fear its going to be a turbo 4 pot!why?because the gts is the runout 981.1 and the 981.2 is 12-18months away and that will be a 4 pot turbo and any R/gt4/spyder will follow!but heres living in hope for a 3.8 but it might be cheaper to drop the 3.8 in the current R and have the better looking car!i am in the 981 is ugly camp and the new gts looks

You clearly dislike the 981 so much that you'll say just about anything to justify a 987. The 20" wheels fill the arches on a PASM equipped car very well.

POST 70Original post

I don't have to justify a 987, I just like them better for looks. as for the wheels lol ok if you think they look ok than that's that and the 987.2 is just as bad if not worse. both look stupid. I swear people will say black is white on here, but ffs that's a wheel arch gap and then some. top car is PASM bottom car non PASM both look daft non PASM looks just stupid.

POST 71Original post

i agree re the wheel arch gaps, the standard suspension setup looks far too jacked up, the size of the wheels is not the issue. PASM cars are ok because of the 10mm drop, R is better with 20mm drop. Re the photo above not sure top car has PASM, does't look like it from the gap.

POST 73Original post

Mine tops out at 72/73 going by the digital speedo

POST 82Original post

Which is probably about 78 in real money, so Cmoose is spot on. Bigger point is this - 76, 78, 82, etc are all too high for max speed in 2nd. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. A thoroughly good job of picking on MrD, though. Who would complain about top speeds something like the following? 1 - 35 2 - 68 3 - 100 4 - 120 5 - who cares? 6 - who cares? No idea if those could be done sensibly, but isn't that the kind of thing that most people think makes sense for our roads? 2nd to nail low speed overtaking and exiting tight corners; 3rd for all other acceleration tasks except motorway work, where 4th steps in. I think PDK is a bit tighter than the manual, presumably in part just because it has an extra gear to stack. No idea where any of the gears peak out, though, because I am too busy enjoying the noise to look at the numbers :-)

POST 83Original post

I hope the GT4 is a step up from the steering on the latest 2.7 that I drove ... for me that had plenty of weight but very little feel at the slip ...

The steering is the reason I don't own one now.

DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted. I didn't get on with the PDK and I wanted something a little more engaging / analogue. Unless you were driving hard it didn't feel that special. It's undoubtedly a beautiful looking car, one of the best on the road IMO, but after a while I was drawn back to the harder edged looks of the CR. I'd agree that the gearing in first and second is too long in these cars. Just as they are getting into their stride you have to back off. If Porsche offered a shorter ratio box i'd be at the top of the queue.

Spec is as you have described but also has nav, spyder alloys and telephone module.

I had not realised how special these cars are before this thread prompted me to find out more. I tried one last week and it is much more interesting a drive than the new cars. The problem I now have is trying to find one. I just tried Paragon for the Black one they had and It seems as soon as they appear they sell! Never had money waiting before, and now i have I can't spend it. Very frustrating.

good luck in your hunt, you won't be disappointed.

Found a very unique Cayman R interior today. I think whoever configured it felt very brave and then had the shock of his lifetime on delivery. www.fsdonline.de/1608006
