did you try jump starting it first or just replaced the battery ?

Suggestion

If you find one that's blown hopefully its just a strange one-off connected with charging it and changing the battery, but bear in mind that it may be something more serious that needs investigating.

A tip when checking the fuse is to shine a light through it (once you've taken it out!), that way you will see whether the little metal link between the two sides is intact or not.

Suggestion

There should be a few spare fuses at the very bottom that you can use to replace any that have blown, if not then they're easily available - just make sure you use the correct size & Amp (usually they're color-coded).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2002 3.6 6MT LHD Carrera is parked up for most of the year abroad (fully serviced, garaged, indoor cover, ctek plugged in, over inflated tyres parked on ramps etc..). The ctek is always plugged into the car and it turned over strong (with the ctek plugged in) and started as it always does. I was going to drive it the next day so I took off ctek and adjusted the tyre pressures ready for the next morning's drive. The next morning it did not start. The battery was old so I replaced it with a new Bosch battery recommended in this forum. The car still doesn't start. All the electrics are working but it doesn't even make the starter motor clicking noise. When I turn the ignition there is nothing apart from all the electrics working and the air conditioning blowing strong .It feels like it's an electrical and not a mechanicals issue. I have owned the car since almost new and it is in pristine condition with a full OPC service history. Even if I don't get to drive it for a year I still service it. I am due to travel back to the country where it is parked but the issue is that there is only one OPC in the entire country and the garage is miles from the OPC. Some amateur googling pointed in the direction of a blown fuse and I don't have any diagnostic equipment. Any ideas on what it could be would be really helpful thank you.

POST 2Original post

I'd start with checking the new battery, test its fully charged and that it's the correct amp. Failing that you can as you have check for a blown fuse. It's likely to be a starter motor or alternator issue. Good luck with getting it sorted 👍

POST 3Original post

Does the immobiliser cut power to the starter motor (only asking as I don't know myself)? Also, are you able to try bump starting it? Try setting the time on the clock, then try starting it - if the time resets to oo oam then it's likely to be a battery issue. If I can think of any other tricks to diagnose the problem I'll post.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you everyone. The battery is brand new, fully charged and it holds the charge. Everything was working fine until I disconnected the battery charger and the old battery died. Old battery and not starting. New battery fitted and not starting. Sorry to sound dense but how do I go about checking the fuses as there are lots in the footwell. I have a multimeter but I only know how to use it to check battery voltage. Any ideas would be appreciated.

POST 5Original post

There should be a guide inside the fusebox cover explaining what each fuse does, but it wont actually take that long just to pull each one out one at a time and then replace in the same location. You will see clearly if the little metal link between the two sides has blown. There should be a few spare fuses at the very bottom that you can use to replace any that have blown, if not then they're easily available - just make sure you use the correct size & Amp (usually they're color-coded).

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you, I will be back in a few weeks and hopefully it is something as easy as a blown fuse.

POST 7Original post

Good luck, hopefully its easily remedied. A tip when checking the fuse is to shine a light through it (once you've taken it out!), that way you will see whether the little metal link between the two sides is intact or not. If you find one that's blown hopefully its just a strange one-off connected with charging it and changing the battery, but bear in mind that it may be something more serious that needs investigating. You'll soon find out though if the fuse blows again. My gut says you'll be ok.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the tip, I'm very optimistic it's something straight forward. Will report back some good news soon .

POST 9Original post

I'll have a wager it's not a fuse. More likely immobiliser or starter solenoid or something similar.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone, I'll try the other key as well.

POST 12Original post

Can you hear the fuel pumps prime when you turn on the ignition ? If I were you, I'd buy a durametrics cable ready to check for error codes when you get to the car.

POST 13Original post

Can i just confirm here .. Car on ctek .. old battery .. you started the car with no problem .. you then took the ctek off , left over night and it wont start ? You replaced the battery .. did you try jump starting it first or just replaced the battery ? When you turn on the ignition .. you get all dash lights illuminated but in the start position you get nothing and not even a click from the starter solenoid ? When in start with interior lights illuminated .. do these go off when held in the start position ? Any chance of a photo of the battery fitted ? IE LHD cars have the neg and positive leads the opposite way around to RHD cars . Important question is did you start the car the day before the ctek removal or not ? EDIT .. can you turn the pcm / radio on when the ignition is turned on ? Having some sort of fault code reader will help to a degree .. if an immobiliser fault you will get a W lead fault code for instance in the dme .

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I've just arrived back at the house. I've answered the below and I've also checked all the fuses (all look good) and tried the spare key (same problem). Thanks for all your help. Car on ctek .. old battery .. you started the car with no problem .. you then took the ctek off , left over night and it wont start ? Yes i last started it with the old dead battery. You replaced the battery .. did you try jump starting it first or just replaced the battery ? Yes, Juno start wouldn't work on the old battery so I just replaced the battery with a Bosch S4 046 12V 80Ah 700A. When you turn on the ignition .. you get all dash lights illuminated but in the start position you get nothing and not even a click from the starter solenoid ? In the start position everything still lights up but no click. After a second the 'Failure indicator' message appears with what looks like a tap. When in start with interior lights illuminated .. do these go off when held in the start position ? No they stay on without even a flicker Any chance of a photo of the battery fitted ? IE LHD cars have the neg and positive leads the opposite way around to RHD cars . The battery cables are fitted properly, I checked them. Important question is did you start the car the day before the ctek removal or not ? The last time it started was when the old battery was in and the ctek charger was switched on. EDIT .. can you turn the pcm / radio on when the ignition is turned on ? Yes and the air con works strong as well. Having some sort of fault code reader will help to a degree .. if an immobiliser fault you will get a W lead fault code for instance in the dme. I just arrived at the house and haven't had time to even look for one. My wife said whatever it is you're going to need Porsche to come out so why buy one at a high cost! Man maths wouldn't sway her.

POST 15Original post

I am guessing starter motor and reckon if you jump the car (or put the CTEK on) with the new battery on as well it might just start. Isn't the earth cable another common problem ie corrosion on the connection to the bodywork. Maybe the new battery has exacerbated the poor connection issue. Good luck and I look forward to seeing the answer. Pip
