Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I've seen the pictures and read somewhere that the instrument dials are white or off white. Is this accurate? I guess the question is: If you do not order a special color for instrument dials, what is the standard color?

POST 2Original post

They're grey aren't they ? Sort of an off-white colour as I understand.

POST 3Original post

If you get a chance to see a Boxster S or 997S they are that color. It's really not gray or white, it's what Porsche calls aluminum but it's not shiny. The standard cars get black dials the S versions get the 'aluminum dials'.

POST 4Original post

Which brings up the question.......who likes the Silver dials? If it were me I would have liked the option to have black like the 997S has. I don't understand why someone at Porsche thinks the silver ones are an 'upgrade' for the higher performance models.

POST 5Original post

The real question is whether Porsche will charge you $690 for Instrument dials in interior color for a black interior on a 'non-S' car!!!!!

POST 6Original post

I like the aluminium in my Boxster S. I am assuming the Cayman S will have identical ones. I think it looks much classsier that the black ones. TO each their own I guess.

POST 7Original post

That is why I love this board, you guys have all the answers. Thanks again.

POST 9Original post

The standard Cayman S dials are definitely aluminum.

POST 10Original post

I rather they be white. But paying nearly $700 to change them from 'aluminum' to white is outrageous. My 330i (w/perf pkg) is nice and dark inside thanks to the black headliner, but on shaded roads/overcast days/rainthe black instrument dials are not as easy to see as they ought to be. I end up having to turn on my lights to see them well. Do we know what color the headliner is on the Cayman S if spec'ed with the black interior? I hope it's balck and not grey.

POST 11Original post

If you go to the official Porsche website and check under the Cayman model information, in the section of interior colors the headliner color is specified. It's a black headliner with the black interior. The other colors are sand and volcano gray. It's probably not a good thing that I remember this stuff............

POST 12Original post

I was disappointed I couldn't get black... Like they've always been in my Porsche dream cars of the past. I can't believe they offer several colors and not black. Very irritating! White (or 'aluminum'- whatever!) gauges look even worse to me now that Chrysler uses them so often.

POST 13Original post

On my '98 C4S the instrument dials are aluminum but appear 'black' at night when the gauge lights are turned on. I think most folks would like them.

POST 14Original post

That's another problem also.......just about everyone uses them now including Ford (have them on my pickup), Chrysler, etc. Nothing special about them anymore. I love my 928 gauges......nice and black with soothing orange needles and readouts. Never had a problem reading them in sunlight or at night and they also look great all the time. That was always one of my favorite things about past Porsches......an 'all business' black gauge cluster with no fru-fru. To me the silver ones now look cheap. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/sad_smile.gif

POST 15Original post

We should be able to expect aftermarket instrument dials in a variety of colors as soon as the Cayman hits the street. It's one of the easiest mods on current Porsches - and far cheaper than the outrageous prices charged for OE.
