Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I looked at a 996 cab with a good service history, the only problem on questioning it appears the RMS is weeping and it was replaced 5k ago with the clutch.

Suggestion

Garry also made the point that if you are in the market for a car and find one where the RMS has been replaced a number of times then beware, because this could be an indication of a more serious problem where there is a defective seal between the two crankcase halves, necessitating an engine strip-down.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking for a new porsche and I'm casting my net quite wide. I looked at a 996 cab with a good service history, the only problem on questioning it appears the RMS is weeping and it was replaced 5k ago with the clutch. Does this mean the engine is shagged???

POST 2Original post

Colin, At a recent Service Workshop at PC Cambridge the subject of RMS leaks on 986 Boxster and 987 Cayman and Boxster models was discussed, but the same would apply to the 986 and 987 911-series cars. Garry Sorrell was joined by three technicians, who between them had more than 50 years Porsche experience, and the point was made that if there is only a light oil misting in the vicinity of the crankcase/bellhousing joint then it is best just to leave well alone. However, if oil drips are present, then further investigation is advisable. Garry also made the point that if you are in the market for a car and find one where the RMS has been replaced a number of times then beware, because this could be an indication of a more serious problem where there is a defective seal between the two crankcase halves, necessitating an engine strip-down. On the plus side, these days they are seeing significantly fewer RMS issues in the workshop and could not recall having seen a failure on the Gen2 cars to date. Jeff
