Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You have the 6204 single row which was confirmed to have the highest failure rate amount the three IMS bearings that Porsche used on the M9X generation of engines.
Leading evidence: 'Use on the m9x generation of engines' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'canadian buyers' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace .html' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I would suspect Canadian buyers to pay a premium over US buyers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

car is 20 years old and it looks well taken care of but by no means perfect.
Other than the bearing issue is there anything else I should be wary of at this age?
market is all over price wise... any thoughts on whats too much?
Appreciate the insight.
I'm in the Barrie area, are there any reputable mechanics in the area that I would be able to use?
Other than the mechanic question, I'm just going to answer by saying DO SOME RESEARCH. Your questions have been answered on this and other forums a thousand times over. Old cars = old parts, bore scoring, water pump, AOS, RMS, deferred maintenance... you get the idea.
Thanks. As a newbie to this forum I did research. Its daunting looking through the thousands of threads trying to find information from long time owners that may apply to my situation.
So I did some research.
welcome to the forum I guess.
Ill admit, reading the threads here I didnt expect that kind of reply from anyone.
not indicative of the community I hope.
WDB is just trying to explain to you there is so much info here that is exactly what you need/want. This isn't something new here, very common question with some great answers. So much so that many posts/threads go into very detailed explanations on cost and problem areas a 20 yo 996 has/will have.
The 996 is a great car no doubt, when all is refreshed/updated its a real joy for sure. But as with many 25 year old cars almost everything has to be updated/refreshed. Sometimes (especially in a high miles car) including a very very expensive engine that has no rebuild short cuts.
Some cars have already had lots of work done, most/many, not so much. A great well maintained all systems updated/refreshed example will cost ya a lot, for sure more than the current value. Unbelievably so, many don't get this and think they can buy a cheap old high mileage car not maintained and drive on road trips/dd it like it just came out of the dealer showroom. Thats a BIG gamble on a 996, for sure.
It might be "daunting" to ya, but if not going in knowing all you can in what to expect, thats a bad idea. Thats why the recommendation to read up on everything to get a good idea if that 996 is for you. Also, if a really really good 996 tech doesn't do your ppi, or if you're not a DIY'er type, don't be $urprised what could happen.
Check out this recent thread, it explains what can happen, there are dozens just like it...

Yes, there are many modes of failure on the M96.03 that is in your car, and the top two that haunt these engines are cylinder bore scoring and IMS bearing. You have the 6204 single row which was confirmed to have the highest failure rate amount the three IMS bearings that Porsche used on the M9X generation of engines. We could go through every mode of failure, but it's best that you take the car to a reputable Porsche shop in your area for Pre-Purchase Inspection.
Price varies depending on your location. I would suspect Canadian buyers to pay a premium over US buyers. Therefore, my comments on price would not apply to you.
