We recommend ordering a half-size down from your standard size or from your previously purchased (2010) Hunziker shoes.

I hope they really do run large because they didnt have anything left in my normal size 11.

With the improvement of our new contoured insole, this run offers a bit more room than the previous run of Hunziker shoes from 2010.

Even though I'm not picky about shoes for normal driving, running shoes are positively awful (at least for 3-pedal cars) because the cushion padding totally insulates you from any pedal feel -- and they are also too wide if you have a narrow pedal area (e.g.

I have a pair of driving shoes I bought years ago but I never wear them because I find it so much easier to heel and toe with running shoes....driving shoes are just too narrow.

Does anyone wear driving shoes?
What do you buy and wear do you get them?
I was looking at, and I am going to spell this wrong Herkimer shoes which are beautiful but Im a size 13 and apparently they do carry them.
I dont know much about them.
Can you tell me what are the best?
Those Steve McQueen shoes are the bomb but I couldnt find my size.
Looking for suggestion and maybe some pictures.
No. With size 13 narrow feet, Adidas Sambas are where it's at. I had a couple pairs of Pilotis because I thought they were cool and they were uncomfortable as hell.
I wear my fancy New Balance shoes. I got them at Dick's Sporting Goods on sale. I took a marker and blurred out the NB to look like a P (for Porsche). Now everybody thinks I have fancy Porsche shoes
Suncoast Porsche had a merchandise tent at the track for the Rolex 24 and I got this and a hat (so did my wife). Adds 25 HP!
I generally just wear the black stiletto heels I originally purchased for driving the Boxster. The aluminum track mats help prevent the heels gouging the carpet.
Serious question: are you the ghost of John Ireland?

You can get Piloti in 13. I tried some on in a store once and they pinched my feet so wide is another story. I never ended up buying any and I just use normal shoes like (some) of these guys.
I have a pair of driving shoes I bought years ago but I never wear them because I find it so much easier to heel and toe with running shoes....driving shoes are just too narrow.
I have a pair of Piloti. They run small, and are narrow, but are nice for heel/toe with the extra "bump" on the outer side of sole. I like them for DE's and do use them on some road drives. I wouldn't go hiking in them, or call them a fashion statement, but fit for purpose.
Sorry guys, I have a pair of the Hunziker Steve M shoes in a size 13 and like them. Piloti is out of business, i understand.
Only wear them on road trips, not much around town, and they go great with my gray pearls.
Personally, I don't wear (or should i say where?) shoes because I need to be able to read my socks.
^^^That's cool that the OP has a shoe named after him. I've only had a beer named after
me
.
Thats actually the best suggestion.
Thank you for the intelligent response.
I am actually a town away from the New Balance factory in Lawrence Ma. I can buy a nice premium pair for cheap. Im sold on that. Thank you.
All kidding aside, if I’m wearing a helmet I’ll put on my Sparco 12.5s. My big, clutzy feet have and will get caught under a pedal or in the foot box if I drive hard wearing anything with a lot of sole or funky tread. I found regular old deck shoes work pretty well for ‘spirited driving’ and are much more comfortable for all-day mucking about and think I’ll try them next time at the track. Plus, driving shoes lower my C sub d significantly.
I usually wear my steel toe work boots. One of things i love about this car is the foot well is large enough for an american male foot. I have to go to the store and buy a pair of sneakers for my first track day in march. I guess i could wear my fire rated shoes left over from my off road and desert racing days???
Looks like they may be back in business as an on-line business now after someone bought them out of bankruptcy. But other searches said they had gone under again. I guess someone needs to order a pair and see what happens.
If your tracking,, Wear real driving shoes,, its to save your feet in a fire,, Driving shoe leather is pre-shrunk, so in the heat of a fire they don't shrink and crush your feet, and they are Nomex lined so the liner doesn't catch fire..
I don't skimp on fire protection or gloves.. Worked corners and helped too many guys out of cars.
True this.^^^ Never driven a twisty track, but when buying protective equipment for driving a sprint car a counter guy said there were two different socks available. One pair was more expensive. I asked which he would buy and his response: "How important are your feet to you?" I bought the more expensive pair.

So I am guessing Nobody has a favorite pair of shoes they like to wear while driving. I have a pair of Pumas that are great. I will definitely check out the new balance.
As for the guy who wears work boots you must be one of those little guys because I cant get my 13s into the footwell.
As for racing shoes which is a whole other type of question you may have misunderstood here but its no surprise about the confusion with some of the guys on this forum. Bill I have no problem believing that you drive in bare feet. With the price of sneakers today you need to do what you need to do.
Nope. Im 6'-4", 195 with an 11w boot. I fit like a glove in this car. Im not saying there is a ton of room like my truck but spacious compared to a miata.
PCA HPDE few people were wearing wrestling shoes. No first hand experience. 62 235 with size 13, and i press clutch with side of my foot, just hits it perfectly.
Seriously, for driving around town I have found that Nike makes some "Training" shoes that work well. Rounded heel, lightweight, thin front sole, slip on.
For track I would default back to my Simpson fire retardant high tops.
Brother I'm a 13 W with chonky legs this pedal box is ideal for the toe/toe shift. Aka the big boy roll. Aka the Sin City stunner. Aka the my big *** feet can't heel/toe.
Check out the Pilotis.
I had a pair of Pumas (driving shoes) and loved them for the feel on the pedals, but way too narrow for my feet and I am not a wide foot. So, I just broke down and bought a pair of these on ebay for $25, what the heck!!!!
I figure I can get at least 3 more HP out of these, lol
Impact racing shoes (new old stock)
I don't know if these are available in the US, but I also have size 13's or in European sizes a 48 and the driving shoes from
Grand Prix Originals
work really well for me and not very expensive either.
Those complaining about the fru-fru-ness of driving shoes have probably never tried them. I wear anything for normal driving -- which is 99.9% of the time, but for long leisure drives or rally's or group drives in 3-pedal cars, driving shoes can be awesome and feel
great
. Puma makes driving shoes that look normal and feel great. I bought a set of Puma Ferrari driving shoes at least 10 years ago -- they weren't expensive and they were all black except for a small yellow Ferrari badge. I thought the yellow badges looked a little obnoxious, so I put black duck tape of them, so they were solid black normal-looking shoes. They felt great for driving and the difference in control you have over the 3 pedals is kind of shocking the first time you try them. My son swiped them and has been using them for kart racing for several years. I haven't had time for pleasure drives, so I haven't replaced them, but if you drive for fun, driving shoes are well worth the investment. They also last forever because they don't get any wear in the car.
I haven't checked lately, but I think Puma still makes some normal looking shoes that are comfortable and great for driving. Even though I'm not picky about shoes for normal driving, running shoes are positively awful (at least for 3-pedal cars) because the cushion padding totally insulates you from any pedal feel -- and they are also too wide if you have a narrow pedal area (e.g. many Italian cars).
FYI, Hunziker shoes are now on sale at 50% off.
I enjoy driving in mine, grip on the pedals, narrower foot so don't accidentally drag on the wrong pedal. Plus, Steve McQueens raise your coolness factor almost to the level of the Porsche you drive.

I could rock those Thomas the Train slippers but sadly they look they would only work on auto trans cars. I have the same problem with my Homer Simpson slippers.
I love Vans. Some might even say I have a Vans
problem.
I'm a bit partial to Ferragamo parigis. It's a problem. I also have a ton of older (pre Nike) Cole Haans that are just as good. Sperry A/Os are also a favorite
Thanks for posting that pic. I realize
my
problem isn't as serious as I first thought.
I was going to reference Imelda in my post but I wasn't sure how many remembered her.
For DE's I have a set of Simpson's, fit great, allow work on pedals as expected
For beating around the back roads, Love me some Bass. WeeJuns. Goes with Jeans to Sport Coats.
Same shoe for 40 years
I bought some
Hunziker shoes last night thx to this thread. I hope they really do run large because they didnt have anything left in my normal size 11.
no i ordered a size smaller per their statement.
Sizing Information
Casual Driving Shoes by Hunziker are designed with comfort in mind. With the improvement of our new contoured insole, this run offers a bit more room than the previous run of Hunziker shoes from 2010. We recommend ordering a half-size down from your standard size or from your previously purchased (2010) Hunziker shoes.
update to these shoes: they were delivered without the fancy lighting bolts, so they are all black suede. They feel wonderful on the feets! Went on first drive with them and gotta say they feel great and I can feel the pedals better than in my running shoes. I'll be sporting comfy ones on my 'fun' drives for sure. I guess "don't knock 'em till you try em" works on this one, or at least for me
Exactly!!! This is the experience I was trying to describe in post #45. I'm the last guy on the planet that would wear silly "racer" shoes -- I don't even wear anything with a car brand logo on it -- but driving shoes are friggin' awesome for any kind of recreational driving -- especially for 3 pedal cars.
Hunziker all the way. I ordered in my regular shoe size, and there is plenty of room. So i would say they run a smidge big. Loved them so i ordered two more pairs.
I previously tried a few different brands for track usage, and all were narrow, too tight, not comfortable ...
So I bought a pair of the Pumas. When I first opened the box, I thought I had mistakenly bought ballet shoes. I haven't driven with them yet but they were comfortable walking from the man cave to the bedroom.
I saved $30.00 by choosing the cheezy BMW themed ones instead of the cheezy Ferrari themed ones.
I've ordered some custom shoes that were supposed to be BMW M-Tech colors. They start out okay but don't fade well.
I was playing around on the Vans website trying some shoes with porsche colors.
Wow. This thread has really grown some legs! And feet too!
I never would have thought it would have been discussed to this length.
Now that I see some of the forum member's shoe collections, I don't think anyone has a leg to stand on when complaining about extremely costly Porsche parts! (no pun intended)
I thought I would follow up on this post since after three months, I finally got around to trying out the shoes on a drive.
I 'get' why people wear them but they're just not for me. I normally wear a 10.5 shoe but ordered 11 for these and they're still just too tight and uncomfortable for anything more than a short trip. I'll be sticking with my Vans.
The key to long drives has always been comfy feet and proper ball adjustment. The Greeks knew it, the Carthaginians knew it, now you know it...
Don't do it. Don't try to polish those shoes with that! You need a more coarse grit than that. Wiping them down with that fluid will help keep the shine.
Best I could do for the historical reference...
(another classic)
You Tube
I
love
that movie. In fact, so much so, that I used some of the soundtrack in a cheesy YouTube video I made about Monterey Car Week in 2012. If it wasn't so embarrassing, I would post here.
I find this curious, as I have had a couple of pairs of Vans and I can never gel with them as I find them so tight and narrow. I dont even had a particularly wide foot, but within a couple of hours wearing them it gets uncomfortable. Is there a wide version available?
i may have already chimed in on hunziker shoes, i am not affiliated, except for the fact I picked up another pair during the $50.00 sale.
i usually wear 11, ordered 10.5, because they run a bit oversize (which is unlike the sparcos, simpsons, whatever else i tried which all were too tight overall, and narrow at the toes).
plenty of room for toebox (?), very comfortable overall.
I received some Akin driving sneakers as a gift and like them quite a bit. The thin soles and rounded heel work well on the pedals and I think the tire tread soles look cool. I wear them on spirited drives and to cars and coffee.
https://akingear.com/collections/sho...riving-sneaker
I have been a vans guy, but Sabahs are my new go-to for driving the 996.
Thin leather soles provide great feel on the pedals.
Also, made of water buffalo hide, which has some magical property that doesnt hold any smell.
You can't really make any accurate assessment of driving shoes, or Vans, or any other brand of shoes until you have tried a pair that fits.
Shoes are very hard to fit via mail order -- probably better to go to a specialty store if you can find one that stocks driving shoes. I was lucky enough to get driving shoes that fit by mail order (Puma's) -- never had more comfortable shoes (or shoes better for driving).
PM sent.
I agree. I'm not writing off the idea of driving shoes based on this one experience. I was just a little surprised that a size up from what I normally wear was so snug.
Hey Brian,
Im just seeing this after so long. I dont look at this forum as so many people feel the need to be a-holes. If youre like me, you just like the ability to really feel the pedals and the sensation you get of the revs youre choosing. Its just a good feeling.
I used to like driving in an old pair of indoor soccer shoes made of ultra soft kangaroo leather. Ive also heard as many have posted that Vans are good. Honestly, unless im tracking, I have grown to love sole-less Cole Hahn loafers/driving shoes. You can usually get them online pretty cheap. Id advise getting a half size too small. Theyll mold to your feet in no time. Use a little shoe cream and theyll last forever.
please let me know what youre using. Id like to know. To each his own brother.
